Depends on your time zone So it's #1 for Monday-Thursday based on 3 hours of PST, 2 hours of mountain time, and 1 hour of central? Wow. The 80K in just three hours could've been enough to put it at top of Building Chart (a lot of Garth's sales will come Friday - Sunday). On the other hand, BB could've just place Bey on top because the would look foolish to ignore what is almost certainly going to be the #1 album for the tracking week.

Prince did something similar with his Around The World In A Day album (minus the videos). He put out the album a full month before the first single was released. He did this with the idea of letting the audience get familiar with the album. This was after the massive Purple Rain soundtrack album. ATWIAD was a really bizarre, non-commercial album.

I do think having a video for every track is something more artists would consider doing, however. It's something even smaller, less established musicians could do. I also think people will really examine how Beyonce's team were so successful in keeping pretty much everything under wraps.
I will buy the physical CD/DVD when it is released next week, and I haven't heard one song and I am not even that big a fan of Beyonce.

I do think having a video for every track is something more artists would consider doing, however. It's something even smaller, less established musicians could do. It is something that many artists can do, but the large budget required to do videos of the quality and scale that Beyonce did might be challenging for some to do. And there will be cases where some labels won't finance that many videos because they may not get a return on their investment. But if it were to become a more common thing, that could be an interesting shift. I also think people will really examine how Beyonce's team were so successful in keeping pretty much everything under wraps. It seems that it's really hard to do that. Justin Timberlake was also one who kept both of the 20/20 Experience albums from leaking and then he did the iTunes stream the week before it was released. Then there are some artists where everything seems to just keep leaking out like Britney, Gaga, Lana Del Rey, etc. While I do believe that some leaks are intentional to test the waters, I think many were done by people in the camp who just should not be. They can't be trusted to keep stuff secret.

You're acting like 200k+ is a spectacular opening. It isn't. It's just baffling that it's enough for a #1 album considering this is the holiday shopping season.
This album will still register her lowest opening ever. It still remains to be seen how it will sell in the long run.

Didn't we establish that the time zones didn't make a difference in tracking times, etc., and that they were all applied to the following day? Perhaps that's only the case when the days in question are Sunday/Monday. ;)

This album will still register her lowest opening ever. It still remains to be seen how it will sell in the long run. In a rare case such as this one, of course it is more than a spectacular opening. Which other artists have dropped an album on a Friday , only on Itunes, with zero promotion, radio airplay or lead single and had a 200+ opening? That's right, NOBODY. She created history...from fans to non-fans to fellow musicians to critics to bloggers...everyone is going nuts. Usually when one person dominates so much attention in social media, it is negative (aka Miley Cyrus at the VMAs). On the contrary, Queen B has been unanimously praised. And she is dominating the charts on top of that...she has the world at her feet.

ALL big releases go #1 on iTunes all over the world, that's not an indication of anything. It's just a thing called fanbase. I love the project though, because it's great that somebody understands the point of selling albums in iTunes - DO NOT MAKE THE SEPARATE TRACKS AVAILABLE, easy as that.

The 'album only' thing is only lasting a week It will still fuel the sales I think as even some casual buyers will end up buying all songs, not just the one featuring Drake or Jay Z.

How is Queen B. No. 1 on the Building chart (Monday-Thursday), when it was released outside of that four-day window? www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/5839720/beyonce-trending-toward-no-1-childish-gambino-top-10-onBeyonce Trending Toward No. 1, Childish Gambino Top 10 On Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | December 13, 2013 The singer's surprise new album should top the Billboard 200, with R. Kelly and Childish Gambino adding top 10 debuts. As previously reported, Beyonce's self-titled fifth solo studio set is likely headed towards a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 when the chart's top 10 is revealed next Wednesday, Dec. 18. The release has suddenly thrown off what was expected to be a second week at No. 1 for Garth Brooks recently-released box set, as Beyonce stealthily released her album last night. Beyonce's iTunes-exclusive "visual" album, retailing for $15.99, contains 14 tracks, not available for a la carte purchases until Dec. 20, and 14 accompanying videos, along with other bonus video content. (As of this morning, no set date has been announced for the CD release to physical retailers or of its availability on other digital download sites.) Still, other action should infuse next week's Billboard 200, with Brooks' "Blame It All on My Roots: Five Decades of Influences" likely dipping to No. 2 after a week at the summit. Also as previously reported, R. Kelly is set to collect his 15th top 10 album on the Billboard 200 next week. His "Black Panties" is on course to sell around 100,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Dec. 15, so say industry forecasters. Meanwhile, Childish Gambino could possibly tally his first top Billboard 200 10. The actor/comedian/hip-hop artist's second album, "Because the Internet," might sell around 80,000 to 90,000 copies by the end of the tracking week. That sales sum might be enough to secure him his first top 10. He just missed the region with his debut set, 2011's "Camp." It debuted and peaked at No. 11, bowing with 52,000 in its first week (according to Nielsen SoundScan). On SoundScan's Building chart, Beyonce's set ranks at No. 1, followed by efforts from Brooks (No. 2), R. Kelly (No. 3) Childish Gambino (No. 4) and Kelly Clarkson's six-week-old holiday release "Wrapped in Red" (No. 5). Rounding out the top 10 are titles by One Direction (No. 6), the Robertsons, of A&E's TV series "Duck Dynasty" (No. 7), Eminem (No. 8), Mary J. Blige (No. 9) and Katy Perry (No. 10). The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking -- reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. Nielsen SoundScan Building Chart Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 NEW Beyonce "Beyonce" 2 1 Garth Brooks "Blame It On All My Roots" 3 NEW R. Kelly "Black Panties" 4 NEW Childish Gambino "Because The Internet" 5 3 Kelly Clarkson "Wrapped In Red" 6 2 One Direction "Midnight Memories" 7 5 The Robertsons "Duck the Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas" 8 6 Eminem "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" 9 10 Mary J. Blige "A Mary Christmas" 10 9 Katy Perry "PRISM" The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales. I think Billboard forget to change the last paragraph. It might have been the first 4 1/2 days of the tracking week.

That's not the point of selling albums on iTunes though..... People will head right back to illegal downloading if they're forced to spend $15.99 on a digital album to get the one hit they heard on the radio, especially now that record labels stopped wasting time suing individual people for downloading.

People just need to admit what Beyoncé did was simply brilliant and it WILL make industry insiders take a 2nd gander at how album releases will work in the future. It's about time someone did something to shake things up because the industry is all but in the grave

Also, Beyoncé is a martyr in a way because no doubt she never be able to recoup the cost of this project but I'm sure it's chump change to her in the bigger picture. BUT very few artists could've pulled this off, she very well might have saved the industry time will tell
