"Fire Inside the Man" is good but not great. Something about the music used for "Tell Me It's OK" reminds me of UB40, or one of the music tracks from one of their songs. I couldn't make it through the full "Memories Are Designed to Fade" clip.

"Fire Inside The Man" is good and I like it a lot. It's catchy and just an all-around pleasant listen. I'm glad that it's lower though, as it isn't one of my favorites. I've been pleased with how the countdown is unfolding so far. :)

I couldn't make it through the full "Memories Are Designed to Fade" clip. Luckily this is the low end of the countdown, so none of the songs are absolutely spectacular :) I'm actually pleased no one has gone bonkers over the tracks so far. I think I'd feel bad if I covered anyone's favorites right off the bat. All 3 of those are low for a reason. They're all good, just not all that fantastic. "Fire Inside The Man" is good and I like it a lot. It's catchy and just an all-around pleasant listen. I'm glad that it's lower though, as it isn't one of my favorites. I've been pleased with how the countdown is unfolding so far. :) I was hoping most people would be! There's really only one song that I know people will be disappointed with as far as placement goes. The rest I'm fairly certain I won't be stoned for

There's really only one song that I know people will be disappointed with as far as placement goes. And I, on the other hand, think the fact that that song hasn't appeared yet means that it's too high on this chart. Assuming it's the one I think it is of course. I was hoping that it wouldn't be in the top 30 at all, but you already shattered all hopes of that with the information you revealed in the very first post of this thread.

The original is not on this countdown, however, the acoustic is what made it. If it's the song you're thinking of that is and after that one night I ranted about how awful the production is on said song, I think we both know what it is. It's higher than I first intended only because it's not the original version. ....wait what did I reveal on the first page?

#24"Tears of Pearls"Is love really the tragedy the way you might describe Or would a thousand lovers still leave you cold inside?
This was the seventh and final single taken from their first album, and it unfortunately flopped pretty hard. I believe it only charted on the Dutch and Swedish singles charts. Like many of the songs off their first album, this song has an 80's pop vibe to it, which I find delicious (not literally - that's just a term I use to describe awesome stuff, deal with it.) There is a Bliss demo of the song as well as the spectacular "Tears On The Dancefloor" remix (can't seem to find this one anywhere but on my CD, friggin' internet fails me again), which honestly, I think I might like this remix just as well as the original. The lyrics have a dark undertone to them, but the music is very dance/pop. The combination somehow works flawlessly and I love it, so there. This one I contemplated having higher up on the list, but after a bunch of rearranging it kept falling on this number.

"Tears of Pearls" is one of my favorites and I was really hoping this would chart high. Like top 20. Or higher haha. But this is Chica's countdown and I know there's a lot good stuff to come going forward. There's just something about this song I really, really love. It's upbeat and dancey, but it still has a darker sound to it, which complement the lyrics well. Love the vocal arrangement too.

I ADORE "Tears Of Pearls" but when I put it against all the others I couldn't place it any higher :( I don't think you'll understand as I keep the countdown going!

#23 “Violet” Common sense is a game many people don’t like to play But give it in and the moment takes you either way
Basically this whole album (Savage Garden sounds like it came straight out of the 80’s and this song is no exception. INXS’ Kick album was actually this album’s inspiration and goal, and this song is a great representation of that. I had a deep moment one night and can now tie this song in with Darren’s solo career. Ready for this? I was listening to Darren’s “Pop!ular” (click this to hear it) and I kept going back to the line, “Dancing to the disco” that is heard multiple times throughout the song. It just sounded familiar and I couldn’t place it. A few hours later I was listening to this song and it clicked immediately after I heard “Dance to the disco” over and over again. Darren’s “Pop!ular” is slightly connected to his mentality during the early stages of Savage Garden and his intense desire to be famous. It’s also a reflection of how the music industry had changed since that time and how difficult it was for him to get any kind of recognition from radio in the early 2000’s. Obviously “Pop!ular” is satire and the song came from Darren sarcastically yelling “who do I have to sleep with to get this record played!?” while working on his 2nd solo album, The Tension And The Spark. So I successfully connected the two songs, so boom, there it is. I actually have no idea if they’re legitimately connected in any way, but that made me feel smart so let me have my moment. Anyway, "Violet" is great and I adore it. The vocals and production just grab my attention.

#22“Mine”I wonder if you know the pain To want the one thing that you haven’t gotThis was one of the two songs that were taken off of the U.S. version of Savage Garden. It appeared on the original Australian version of the album as well as the Bliss Demo tape where it was titled “Mine (And You Could Be)”. Apparently when they signed their recording contract with Columbia/Sony in the U.S. the company decided the line “I’ll bear all the crosses and the crucifixes you can provide” wouldn’t take too well with listeners and they took the song off the album. So, it became a b-side from then on, which is utterly shameful. This song is absolutely gorgeous. The lyrics, melody, production, vocals, everything is incredible. I'm a sucker for violins and acoustic guitars, so this song is heaven for my ears. Basically I just adore it and I'm still excessively upset it was taken off the U.S. album. I feel deprived as an American.

This is probably middle-of-the-pack from their first album, though there's really only two tracks from that album that are farther behind the rest. I do like how it throws open the gate to the rest of the album past the U.S. singles, though. So, this is probably the best song yet, but I'm not at all broken up about it being #24. :) EDIT: OK, it and "Violet" are about equal. (Fitting that they're back-to-back here, no?) I'll listen to "Mine" when this week's AT40 ends. (Currently posting on that now over in Pop.)

I'm thinking this is a good sign, ya know, since the songs should get better as this continues haha They're actually pretty much on the same level for me as well, I just felt "Violet" had a small edge and it had a higher play count, but that's why they're back-to-back. I'm kind of really looking forward to your "Mine" commentary. Usually the only people who have opinions of it are super fans who adore it, but I'm interested to know what other people think of it.

#21“You Can Still Be Free”Aim for the burning sun You’re trapped inside, but you can still be freeThis song first appeared on the Bliss demo tape as “Free” and was slightly reworked and renamed for Affirmation, which I’m ecstatic about. It would have been tragic had this remained an unheard demo. I absolutely ADORE everything about this song. The lyrics are stunning, the production perfectly accompanies the mood of the track, and Darren’s vocals are glorious. I’m actually thrilled they kept the song for Affirmation instead of recording it for their debut album, because if you’ve listened to the entire Affirmation album you’ll know it has a very cohesive sound, both with the production and vocals. I don’t think the song was ready to be on t heir debut and it would have felt awfully out of place, but it fits the concept and all around sound of Affirmation flawlessly. The final song is definitely a massive step up from the original demo.

TBH after "Two Beds and a Coffee Machine", the rest of the album is a couple steps down from everything that came before it.

A lot of people loved "Promises" but I just could not get into it. Great song, but it just didn't grab me like songs like "Mine" do. Pumped that you don't hate it though haha. I definitely would have thrown out "Santa Monica" for this one, but I have to strongly disagree with "Break Me Shake Me" I really love that one. Ooooh, then you might be disappointed down the line. It actually took me quite some time to really love and appreciate both "You Can Still Be Free" and "Two Beds And A Coffee Machine" actually. They're still my least favorite from the album, obviously, as they're the lowest on the countdown from Affirmation.

Also, for the love of God will everyone please look in the background of Darren at 2:38 (PAUSE IT!). You will not be disappointed. As soon as I read this, I immediately wondered if it was the part of the video that you kept pausing and having me re-watch about 20 times. That wasn't it though; the video I'm thinking of involved some facial expression of Darren's that amused you to no end. I'm sure that you'll be writing a giant essay about the said facial expression in whatever video I'm thinking of. I think this was actually my first time hearing "Universe" and it's a really soothing song. It reminded me of an early 90s R&B ballad. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it quite so much to be honest. Obviously “Pop!ular” is satire and the song came from Darren sarcastically yelling “who do I have to sleep with to get this record played!?” It's still ponderous as hell to me that a handful of Darren fans took that song seriously and abandoned his music. It's one of the most obviously satirical songs I've heard in my entire life. I'm sure you already picked up on this similarity a long time ago, but the guitar chords of "Violet" immediately reminded me of those of "I Want You". "I Want You" with an INXS influence is actually a great way to describe this song in my opinion. The INXS influence is very evident in "Mine" as well. ....wait what did I reveal on the first page? Well I was trying to avoid giving the song away, so I purposely didn't elaborate lol. But what you revealed was all of the tracks off Affirmation appeared in your top 30. I'm really eager to give their debut album a thorough listen now. I enjoyed all of the songs that you've posted from that I hadn't already heard and was pleasantly surprised by the heavy 80s and early 90s influences. I suspect that I won't enjoy Affirmation nearly as much as a whole, but that too will be getting a thorough listen from me one of these days. As will all 72840288408294820 of those Darren solo songs that you gave me. :)

I think this was actually my first time hearing "Universe" and it's a really soothing song. It reminded me of an early 90s R&B ballad. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it quite so much to be honest. I am completely at a loss for what that video was now. OH MY GOSH NOOOO I REMEMBER! Was it the Australian version of "I Want You" where the end of the video is a 30 second ode to Darren's hair!? I can't think of anything else I would have made you watch over and over again. That was less facial expression though and more just awesome. That part of the video amuses me tremendously. That's actually a perfect way to describe "Universe" - Soothing. Quite a few actually. The album itself is a fan favorite for sure, but that song turned a lot of fans off apparently, because they did believe it. They clearly weren't paying much attention to the conceptual aspect of Darren's music at that point in his career, because yes it is so obviously satirical it's almost comical to think anyone could take that song as a real life occurrence. Not to mention the countless interviews Darren did about the song, stating it was satire. I'm assuming these "fans" were more like casual listeners trying to hold on to the Darren they knew in Savage Garden. I hear slight similarities and as far as the album goes, those two are definitely the most alike instrumentally. The whole album is very INXS-esque. "Violet" especially and a couple of other songs coming up on the list. It's very evident, especially with how 80's/early 90's the album sounds. I love it. It made them unique and I love INXS so I couldn't ask for a better influence for their album! Ooooh, yes I did give that away. It's the song you're thinking of I'm pretty sure of that. Just remember it's not the studio version I placed so high though. So that helps! Unfortunately that damn song is a massive fan favorite and I can't understand that or how it was so much more popular than the rest of their songs, ugh. Affirmation was too flawless for me to leave anything out, even that one. I won't give away it's placement, but it did make it to the show. You must! I honestly cannot choose an album, because although Affirmation seems to be my favorite, I still have most of my favorites come out of Savage Garden. The Aussie version of the album is by far better in my opinion. I hope you'll enjoy Affirmation, but I suspect you'll be more into Savage Garden because it has more of an alternative sound to it. Next step is definitely the million Darren-tastic songs, because I'm currently working on a Top 100 Darren countdown... that you WILL follow.

#20“In This Lifetime”We just keep holding on cause love’s enough to keep us goingAnd so begins the top 20! I'm not sure if anyone will really cling on to this one, but I love it, so I had to include it. After this one things will pick up a bit in the songs department and people might start actually recognizing the songs and liking them more (hopefully) but I have to get this one out of the way first So, starting off the Top 20 is the second Bliss demo to appear on this countdown and the one I’m actually really upset didn’t make it onto an album. I don’t really know how to explain it, but I just love this one. I love the layering of Darren’s vocals in the chorus and the melody is incredible, to me at least. Out of their whole demo tape, I’ve played this one by far the most; even though the quality is poor I can’t get[ enough of it. The YouTube version is even worse (like, significantly) than what I have and the end is cut off. I have no idea why, but still you get the idea of the song so we're good. It's just a little harder to listen to on YouTube.

I have some catching up to do:
I love "Violet" now, especially the verses, but it took me a little while to get into the music on this one. Still not one of my favorite favorites, but really good.
I love how "You Can Still Be Free" builds. It's actually hard for me to get into the beginning of the song, but it allow for a nice build so I'm okay with it. The music on this one is super good.
"Mine" is amazing. It should not have been taken off the US version! The rhythm throws me off slightly, but not enough to be bothered at all. The music is great and the violins add a really important element to the son. I LOVE the echoing vocals of the lines "Just a twist in time" ... "And you could be mine" ... "Just a sip of wine". It's gorgeous.
Okay, so, "In This Lifetime" is an excellent demo- one of my favorites! Glad it made it this high too. I would have given anything for this to actually be recorded though. Can you imagine what the heights this song could have been taken to with the right production?

#19“Affirmation”I believe we place our happiness in other people’s handsNow I'll start getting into songs people know :) I know many call this song pretentious and hypocritical, but I’m going to disagree, because I can. This is off of Affirmation, obviously. The song isn’t entirely that deep, nor is it hard to understand, but the lyrics are just meant to be Darren’s beliefs on life. I think people like to read into this song little deeper than need be and basically rip the words apart and make them something they’re not. Also, people seem to think the repetitive “I believe” is silly and unnecessary, but again I disagree. I think using “I believe” before each line makes the line more definite and they come across with more purpose than they would had the “I believe’s” been left out. Every single line of the song is in my opinion, amazing. They’re all very much true and they’re things that you may or may not think about until they’re laid out in front of you. They’re simple truths. I think the song is amazing, so regardless of the criticism it’s received over the years, I’ll always love it. The more I listen to the song, the more I appreciate it. Oh and the song peaked at #16 on the ARIA singles chart.

:'( :'( :'( Only #19. Ouch.
Really should have done better over here than it did; sadly it didn't even reach the chart until "Crash and Burn" had been gone for a little over a month.

I know I had a really hard time placing it that low. It's not a good reflection of the song, because I adore it, I really do. It just became so hard to place it higher when there are so many other songs that just do more for me. I'm more connected and obsessed with other songs of theirs. Did it even chart in the US? I've never been able to find much information on it. I was unaware it was even released to US radio..? I have some catching up to do: I love "Violet" now, especially the verses, but it took me a little while to get into the music on this one. Still not one of my favorite favorites, but really good. Can you imagine what the heights this song could have been taken to with the right production? I always really loved "Violet" but I haven't a clue why. I think I just like the funky beat. I think that's why I love it so much. I love violins and pianos, especially when there's a build and this song has an incredible build. The lyrics are pure gold as well. I'm glad you're with me. I'm still bitter, still so bitter. I mean really I doubt many people would have even noticed the line. It wasn't worth taking it off the album completely and demoting it to a b-side. I know, that one I would have been so pleased to see as a studio recording.

#18 “The Animal Song” Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie Which one is more human? There’s a thought, now you decide
One of the more upbeat tracks from Affirmation. The song was also a single and was featured on the soundtrack for the film The Other Sister (never seen it). The single did quite well on the charts. It got to #3 on the ARIA charts and made it into the Top 20 landing at #19 on Billboard. I had a really hard time choosing between this one and "Affirmation" and they went back and forth for quite some time, but this had just a slight edge. I'm not really sure why, it just does. It's just too catchy- yeah that's probably what gave it an edge. This song is basically all drums… I guess it adds to the carefree rhythm? Still, people seem to think this is the stupidest song they’ve ever done, mainly because of the lyrics. I don't agree. Maybe I just like to over-analyze lyrics too much, but I really don’t think they’re all that stupid. The lyrics under the banner are my favorite, even though those are the ones that get criticized the most. Most people take them completely at face value and decide to point out the obvious like “um children are HUMAN you idiots” or “Children lie ALL THE TIME” and both statements are true. However, as a Savage Garden/Darren Hayes fan you have to learn to read between the lines and very rarely take their lyrics at face value. This song is no exception. So, instead of ranting (which would make this like 10 pages long) about what I think the lyrics mean, I’ll leave you with that bit of advice and see if that changes the meaning for anyone. I’m curious to see what everyone else gets from the lyrics, before I throw my opinion in there. However, I will throw out there that children are blunt as heck and they just say whatever comes to mind. It's not until we become adults and learn from our parents and teachers what's appropriate to say. We learn to conceal our feelings, thoughts, everything that isn't socially acceptable.

Did it even chart in the US? I've never been able to find much information on it. I was unaware it was even released to US radio..? It spent only like a month on the R&R Pop chart, reaching #37. :( Ooooooh the R&R chart. That explains why I can't ever find much. All of their music seemed to chart higher there than Billboard, or at least the songs I've found info. on.

Hmmm, I should comment instead of continuously liking them & not sharing my opinion on them. ;) I really like the vocals on "The Animal Song", though outside of that I'm honestly not crazy about everything else about it. This song definitely differs from most of the other songs on Affirmation with it being upbeat. It's good, though it's definitely not one of my favs from them, I like where you ranked it tbh.

#18 “The Animal Song” Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie Which one is more human? There’s a thought, now you decide

I hated this when it was originally out because I couldn't get in to what was being sung, and the 13-year-old me couldn't stand Darren's voice in the chorus. It's not nearly as bad now, and actually it fits pretty well with the album despite originally being a soundtrack song. Actually, it's oddly interesting how the tracklisting goes: Single/non-single/Single/non-single ... for the first 8 tracks.

Ok, I've only listened to "The Animal Song" & "Affirmation" but I'm absolutely in love, great catchy songs! They rang a few bells so I think I had heard him before somewhere Will check the rest whenever I have more time!

I support that. Comment away! It really does differ and I think that's why I forget it exists a lot. It's deep enough, as well as catchy enough for me to rank it just inside the Top 20, but I agree, not one of my favorites either. I never even remotely noticed the tracklisting bit before. Probably because "Hold Me", "The Best Thing" and "Chained To You" were released in either Oz or other countries, so I always automatically think of them as legit singles. However, that pattern is obvious for the US singles. "Couldn't stand Darren's voice in the chorus"..hmm, foreign concept to me Ok, I've only listened to "The Animal Song" & "Affirmation" but I'm absolutely in love, great catchy songs! They rang a few bells so I think I had heard him before somewhere Will check the rest whenever I have more time! I'm starting to get into familiar terrirory finally haha. Your comment pleases me haha Hopefully you'll like some more of them and more will become familiar!
