#12"A Thousand Words"Time manipulates your heart Preconceptions torn apartI guess we can finally take a break from Affirmation and get back to some Savage Garden tracks. This song perfectly embodies why their first album was so amazing. I adore how flawlessly they wrote songs. They had such a way with words, something I’m grateful Darren carried on in solo work. Not to mention the passion in Darren’s voice is spot-on, which it usually is, but still. The song is basically about being manipulated by someone you care about it a relationship that’s fallen apart beyond repair and no matter what’s said, it’s over. It most likely had a double meaning though and can probably be interpreted a thousand different ways (ohhh that was accidentally punny). I’m madly in love with this song and it’s definitely one of my favorites from the album. So enjoy it dammit.

"The Lover After Me" is probably my second least favorite Affirmation track. I find it a little on the weak side melodically. I do listen to it though because I find it strong lyrically and soothing to listen to. I was gonna say that I am actually pleasantly surprised that "I Knew I Loved You" made it as high as it did. . The production on the original doesn't bother me and I think the song is melodically very pretty, but I have to say.. the acapella is beyond amazing and extremely striking vocally. Same with the max session, the violins gave the song a completely different feel. Amazing stuff! Okay so question for you because I’m really curious...if it wasn’t for the acoustic version and other versions of this song, can you give us an idea of where you would have placed the original on the countdown? LOVE “Chained to You.” Yet another one of my favorites from Affirmation. At this point, it should go without saying that Darren sounds great. But, some things deserve repeating. He sounds great here. The music really matches the vocal melody. The arrangement sounds really cool and is very original sounding, at least to my ears. “The Best Thing” is a really cool song because, like you said, it’s really upbeat, happy, and catchy, but it’s still an interesting listen. A lot of times really “happy” songs can sound a little dull to me, simply because I gravitate towards darker melodies, but this still has edge to it. The vocals in the chorus are really smooth, so it’s also a soothing listen. A well rounded song, for sure. lol. “A Thousand Words” is a really good song, but it’s also one of my least favorites from the Savage Garden album. Considering how much I love the album though, that’s actually not a negative comment about the song. I like the beat and the vocal arrangement is very good. The lyrics and vocal delivery are great as always. The only two songs I like less on the album are “Universe” and “Santa Monica.”

"The Lover After Me" is probably my second least favorite Affirmation track. I find it a little on the weak side melodically. I do listen to it though because I find it strong lyrically and soothing to listen to. Really? I find the melody to be very strong and soothing (which you did mention that haha). Maybe at first listen though I can see where it lacks in comparison to the rest of their music, as well as the rest of the music off of Affirmation, but I'm just too in love with the song now to hear it's weaknesses. Darren's vocals just blow me away for some reason, and not necessarily because they're strong or even unique, there is just something that gets me. Possibly the calming aspect of the melody, instrumental, arrangement and Darren's voice. I have no idea why it bothers me so much, but it really throws the whole song off for me. Melodically, yes, it's gorgeous, hence why I chose different versions to speak higher than the original. I say anything with the words acapella and Darren Hayes are going to be breathtaking, but with that song especially, at least for me. Oh jeez, that's a tough one. I'd say possibly 25? Somewhere around that general area would be my best guess. I'd have to redo my countdown if I wanted to give you an exact number, but I know it would be around #25. I just dislike the production too much to place it any higher than that. It's one of my favorites as well, even though the placement doesn't represent that very well, haha. It's hard for me because that friggin' album is so flawless. He kind of rocked this track vocally, so really you do need to point it out, repeatedly. This song is FANTASTIC live as well. Ya know, where he broke out his Elvis persona. Pretty sure that's where "Daz" came from... so basically he did that to himself haha. I had a hard time choosing between "The Best Thing" and "Chained To You" as far as which got a higher placement, but I've listened to this one more and there's something about that just draws me in a bit more. That's the great thing about Savage Garden; even with their "happy" songs there is still a touch of darkness in everything, especially when it comes to the production and melody. The arrangement never has that bubblegum sound to it, there is always some kind of edge. I have a thing for the guitar arrangement in this one, so that could be why it placed higher. I have no idea why that makes such a huge difference, but it really does. Seriously it ranks with "Universe" and "Santa Monica"??? That actually shocks me, but then again this is up there in my favorites for that album. I clearly love it as it's just outside of the Top 10. You're gonna laugh when you see what song beat it for #11 though... they were fighting for the position and the song I'm posting next beat this one by just a hair. I'm laughing just thinking about it.

#11“All Around Me”You’re the fries on the side with a cherry on topNow for the second track taken off (as in removed from) of the U.S. release of their debut album. Seriously though, why!?!?!? This song is so bad it’s good, no not good, GREAT. I love it so much it hurts. I'm serious, I adore it and I have no freaking clue why, because it's kind of terrible, but it's really not, it's really amazing. This is the worse description for a song I've ever written. I’m pretty sure it’s about Daniel’s obsession with Meg Ryan…I read that in a magazine interview once many years ago. I cannot take this song seriously, at all, which is a nice break from their normally meaningful lyrics I suppose. Darren’s little… um… I don’t even know what to call it. Impression? Rap-thing? Whatever you want to call it the whole let me sing in a sassy, high-pitched accent bit is hilarious and amazing. Especially the whole “God I’m running out of words but you know what I meeeeeeaaaannn.” It makes the song even better than it already is. Every time it comes on I belt that crap out like it’s my job. I know it was released as a promotional single at some point, but did nothing. I don’t care how silly and ridiculous this song is, it should not have been taken off the U.S. album, period. Most people will probably think it’s terrible, but I can’t handle how great it is. It’s perfect to meeeeee. I could marry this song. Honestly, it was almost Top 10, but I had to force myself not to let it get that far.

Before it's too late and you begin the Top 10, I think I should make some comments. • When you said that "Crash and Burn" was certainly not low, I thought it didn't make the Top 10, but it did. YES!!! • Surprised to see "Affirmation" at #19. I thought it could be higher though, but it's a good spot, I guess. • I didn't know that "The Animal Song" was featured on the soundtrack of a film. Nice to know that. • "I Knew I Loved You" only at #15. Ouch! I'm shocked to know you didn't like it. Personally, it was the first song I knew from them, which it was weird if we consider if it's from their second album. • I can't believe I forgot to give a shoutout to "I Want You" BTW, amazing countdown so far! :)

You wrote this description for this song and you're still wondering why it was taken off the U.S. version of the album? Really? ;) I don't mind it, but Promises > Mine > All Around Me. Yeah yeah I'm aware of my inconsistencies. My love for the song fogs my better judgements. Still opposed to the removal of it, still opposed. Most preferred "Promises", well, actually most of the hardcore fans preferred the "All Around Me" and "Mine" but the general public and everyone else who listened to the album loved "Promises" so I suppose in the end they did make the right decision :'( Before it's too late and you begin the Top 10, I think I should make some comments. • When you said that "Crash and Burn" was certainly not low, I thought it didn't make the Top 10, but it did. I love "Affirmation" but compared to everything else I had a hard time placing it higher, because there were so many songs I couldn't place lower, haha. I always have issues with fan favorites from a lot of my favorite artists. It's simply the production that throws me off for "I Knew I Loved You" and knowing the background story. I think I compared it to "Truly" far too much and it's value quickly decreased after that. YEESSS!! to the "I Want You" shoutout! Finally someone acknowledges that gem :) And thank you! I'm having fun with it!

#10 “Hold Me” I wanna scream, but bitterness has silenced these emotions
Back to Affirmation and welcome to the Top 10! It actually took me awhile to truly adore this track and I don’t really know why. It’s grown to be one of my favorites from the album, and one of my favorites from their entire career. I absolutely adore the lyrics and melody and as usual the production is flawless. It’s another song that discusses a relationship falling apart, because that’s what was happening in Darren’s life while he was writing the album. I'm thinking it’s about the last phase of his marriage, when they both knew it was over no matter how hard they tried to hold on. This is another song that shows why Savage Garden was such a success, well to me at least. They knew exactly how to put real, raw emotion into poetic words then set it to beautiful music. The lyrics are easy to relate to, they’re simple, but they’re also beautiful and poetic. Oh yeah, and the song flopped miserably on the charts only making it to #54 on the ARIA chart. SHAMEFUL! The video is also incredible and I love it. I have way too many inside jokes to go along with it at this point, but I’m not going to say any of them or it will ruin the video for everyone. However, I will ruin countryrocks for a second with his stupid moment while watching this video. Countryrocks: * clicks furiously at quality settings * “oh my god I hate it when YouTube does this! Look at this quality! It’s awful!” Me: “Justin… It’s raining and they’re shooting Darren through the rain covered window.” Countryrocks: * blank stare * Me: *starts laughing so hard I can’t breathe* …you’re welcome buddy. There may have been a harmless child abduction scenario involved on my part, but we won’t talk about that one.

#9“I Don’t Know You Anymore”I’ll be courageous if you can pretend that you’ve forgiven meI am SUCH a sucker for piano ballads, especially when you go and add Darren Hayes’ beyond incredible vocals to the equation. This is literally one of the most beautiful, emotional, and just plain incredible songs I have ever heard in my life, period. I have played this song on repeat for hours on numerous occasions, because it’s just that amazing. To me this is when they really shine, when everything is stripped away and you get to see just how talented they both are. Darren as a vocalist, Daniel as an instrumentalist and both of them as songwriters. I’m so glad all the heavy production was stripped away for this track, because it needs nothing more than Darren’s voice and Daniel’s piano. Affirmation has too many amazing tracks, so again I’ll praise it and it’s because of songs like this. It’s again a song about Darren’s divorce, and it’s my favorite of them all. I’ve always found it a tad bit ironic that it’s the last track on the last album that they recorded together. Let that sink in for a second. This is one of those songs I can never just mindlessly hear. I get so sucked into it whenever it comes on that I can’t ignore it. I will stop what I’m doing and just sit and listen to it, because although it’s simple it’s so powerful and almost mesmerizing. There really aren’t enough words in the world to describe how amazing I think this song is. Although it’s basically the same, this performance kills me. Maybe because you can tell just how connected Darren is to the song and the performance seems more emotional than even the studio, which I thought was ridiculously emotional. I love how Daniel manages to groove to the song and Darren is completely composed and almost somber. Also love this performance from their Superstars And Cannonballs DVD.

#8“Love Can Move You”Love can move you. Take you deeper every time Can make the darkest moments feel like heaven’s come aliveAnd I now present to you my favorite Savage Garden b-side! This song is so infectious and brilliant. Really it just makes me so happy and can put me a better mood instantly. I believe it basically is about their feelings about coming to the U.S. and New York. It also talks about how love can give you that euphoric feeling. It’s just a bunch of feel-good emotions mixed into one fantastic song! I just love it I adore the arrangement and instrumentals. The sound is so 80's and I feel nostalgic whenever this is on.

Kinda mixed about this one actually. Melodically it's not bad, but I feel like Darren doesn't quite deliver on the level that he does on most of their other songs.

Are you talking about "Love Can Move You"? I do have to agree on some levels with that, to be honest. I don't think it's quite as emotionally convincing, or something..?? Not sure how to describe it. I adore the song so much that everything else makes up for it, and I still adore his vocals.

#7“Break Me Shake Me”You just keep me contemplating that your soul is slowly fadingIf you’re ever angry with someone, pop in this track! I’ve always thought this one channels Darren’s inner Michael Jackson. It’s definitely more on the rock side, which I find highly appealing. Basically it’s a “screw you” song that says, no matter how much you mess with me I’m coming out ahead, because you’re a horrible person (or something like that). It’s the fourth single off of Savage Garden and faired pretty well on the charts, making the top 10 and landing at #7 on the ARIA chart. It’s an amazing track and is quite different from anything else they’ve done. There were two videos made for the song; one for the Australian market and is clearly low budget, but I rather enjoy it and the other (click the banner) for the European market. Although the second video is great, the literal shaking of the camera is too much for me and I’d prefer a different approach to whole “shake me” idea. I get the concept, obviously, but it's too much for my eyes to focus on. Also, I have to shine some light on two versions of the song that I adore! The Acoustic (Adore THIS!) and the Broken Mix(I'm not sure if that works or not, but I tried) are absolutely flawless. I’m fairly certain I listen to these versions just as much as the original. LBTrocks and I also recently discovered that this might be the only song that Darren has ever truly “belted” out (we’re talking in his entire career here). I know you'll be happy to see this chart in the Top 10 buddy

I forgot to make something clear haha. "A Thousand Words" is my third least favorite song from Savage Garden. "Santa Monica" and "Universe" are my two least favorites from it. There's a definite gap between them and "A Thousand Words" though, because I actually do like it a lot more than the other two. "All Around Me" is really amusing (especially the rap part...only Darren could make that work for me) and I agree it's hard to take seriously. Darren's vocals on it are still something to be taken seriously though, I actually really love the arrangement in the verse. Bahaha I remember that time in which you described...I was so legit upset at YouTube and the poor quality of the video. And then you tell me what's going on and I just sit there staring at the screen thinking. Oh. And then we pretty much died laughing. That was so bad! Anyway, "Hold Me" is excellent and I think it's a perfect way to start off the top 10!! The melody is both simplistic and powerful at the same time. The chorus of "I Don't Know You Anymore" is where the song truly shines for me. It's phenomenal! The verse is very pretty, but it does take me a little bit to get into it. The closer it gets to the chorus the more I like it. But yeah, the song is gorgeous and certainly top 10 worthy. And as we've established many times before, Darren with just a piano = great times. I think Darren's vocals on "Love Can Move You" feel a little...flat....to me. Not flat as in he doesn't hit the notes right, but flat as in kinda the same throughout the song and I think it's a little...dull...sounding. It's hard to describe, but I understand what Libra and you are saying. Honestly, whatever it is, it doesn't really bother me much at all. I still love the melody of the song and Darren certainly doesn't sound bad on it...there's just other songs of theirs that I find much more vocally striking. YES I adore "Break Me Shake Me," it's always been a favorite of mine. His vocals in the verse get me every single time. The arrangement gets an A+ and Darren sings it to perfection. His vocals are very smooth on it and it works! His vocals are compliment the eerie/darker sounding music of the minor key perfectly. Yeah as I said, Break Me Shake Me was never one of my favorites from that album. Actually, two...no, I think three of the songs I like most are still to come. Just out of curiosity, do you know what it is about the song you don't really care for? I always find it interesting to hear specifically what people like/dislike about something. Only [somewhat] negative thing I can say about the song is that I wish the beat in the chorus was a little different. It gave the song a little more of a bangy feel than I would have liked. But, that's only a minor complaint. I'm a big fan of the song.

Yeah as I said, Break Me Shake Me was never one of my favorites from that album. Actually, two...no, I think three of the songs I like most are still to come. I saved the best for last ;) There are 2 songs that aren't exactly fan favorites coming up still, but I think the rest are pretty recognizable I forgot to make something clear haha. "A Thousand Words" is my third least favorite song from Savage Garden. "Santa Monica" and "Universe" are my two least favorites from it. There's a definite gap between them and "A Thousand Words" though, because I actually do like it a lot more than the other two. And I clearly still like it more than you do haha! I was hoping there was a noticeable gap between them, so thanks for clarifying I was going to be a tad bit upset if you lumped that majestic song along side by side with those two. Not that those two are at all bad, they're great, but in comparison, no. In an order for me it's "Santa Monica", "Universe" and then "A Thousand Words"... but if we lumped the whole album it would go much differently (see this entire countdown for an accurate ranking). The first time I heard Darren's odd bit I was like: But then I was like: And now every time I hear it I'm sitting there like: "it's not that funny anymore".. *millisecond later*.."yes it is ahahahaha" Hahahahaha, I'm so glad you clarified that Darren's voice is a serious matter! No, but seriously, just because the song isn't' serious does NOT mean we take Darren's vocals any less seriously guys, SERIOUSLY. Hahahahaha!!! I thought you were gonna go Hulk on my laptop and I had no idea why you were so upset, since I clearly knew it was rain (you saw the ultra confused look on my face when you went beast mode). There were tears, everywhere. I could not breathe. I'm glad you still like the song after that I'm sold on the whole thing, obviously, but the chorus is probably my favorite as well. At least you're pleased with the Top 10 so far! They are flat. For Darren. If you put him up against any other vocalist, no haha. I agree, but I still think he does perfect on the song, and I don't think it necessarily needs soaring vocals or anything crazy, so I'm good with it. Plus, it's a B-Side, so I'm sure there's a reason for that. I should have posted his Big Night In performance where he mashed it with "Head Like A Hole" and took the song to a whole new level! So here: This should be an answer to that complaint haha. Best performance of that song, period.

#6 “Truly Madly Deeply” I wanna lay like this forever Until the sky falls down on me
Oh this is going to be long. I mean really, do you understand just how much I can say about the song that defined Savage Garden’s career? And rightfully deserved to! My feelings about this song are pretty much the exact opposite of what I expressed for “I Knew I Loved You.” This song has everything that song just fell short of. I know it was supposed to be their second “Truly” but how on earth could you ever beat this? Or even come close to it for that matter? This song is timeless perfection and deserves every ounce of success and praise that it has received. So, to start, here is all of its glorious achievements! First of all, it was their first Billboard #1. That’s actually quite a small feat considering what the song would go on to do. The song spent 11 weeks at #1 and remained on the A.C. chart for a record 123 weeks, 58 of those being in the top 10 (“I Knew I Loved You” broke that record with 124 weeks just under two years later). The song stayed on the A.C. Recurrents chart for another 202 weeks, after it fell off the main chart. It also re-entered Billboard’s Hot Singles Sales chart in March of 2002 and became a U.S. Top 30 bestseller, yet again, over four years after its original release. It remained on that chart until late July of 2002. God I am loving this. Perhaps the sweetest moment for this song was being named Billboard's Greatest Adult Contemporary song of all time. Oh yes. That happened. Remember back when I was talking about “ I Knew I Loved You” and I mentioned that IKILY wasn’t the only song that made it onto the Top 100 Adult Contemporary Songs Ever list? Well, “Truly” managed to steal the top honor. This is the interview with Darren if anyone’s interested (I was). I’m still trying to come down from that high. Particularly this quote from the article: “In the 50-year history of Billboard’s Adult Contemporary songs chart, which launched July 17, 1961, no other single is bigger than Savage Garden’s ‘Truly Madly Deeply.’” I was aware of how massive this song was, because I grew up with it, but I didn’t quite fathom it being that huge. So, back to other junk about the song. There are two pretty distinct versions of the song. There’s the Australian release, which is much more stripped down and then the reworked U.S. version; I love them both. It’s also a reworking of a song called “Magical Kisses” which is much more up-tempo and kind of silly. The verses are the same, but the chorus is almost comical and quite embarrassing compared to what the song would become. I laughed out loud the first time I heard it (but to be honest I freaking love it). I think it’s more comical when you know that it would grow up to be a much different, more mature song. Darren wrote it for his wife at the time and thought the song should be just a hidden track on the album (what a shame that would have been!) but the record company thought otherwise, thankfully. As Darren has said, it came from a very real place for him and he basically poured his heart out and I think that’s what speaks volumes and what makes this song so magical. I think it’s also what makes it much, much different from “I Knew I Loved You.” To me it’s one of those songs that remains timeless and is a song that will hopefully continue being played on radio for many years to come, as it still gets played hundreds of times a week on radio 15+ years later. There has never been a single love song that has struck a chord with me the way this has. I basically grew up with it and I can’t really remember a time where it didn’t exist. I was old enough to remember it, but too young to understand just how incredible it actually was. I’ve had to learn that as I grew up, but I never grew tired of this song and it to this day remains my favorite love song. The music is so wonderful, specifically the acoustic aspects. The production is flawless and this has to be the most perfectly produced love song I have ever heard. I wouldn't say Darren's vocals are the strongest, but at the same time they are emotionally strong, because you can hear his vulnerability. You believe what he's singing, because of the way he sings it. It's just flawless.
The commentary is going to be getting significantly longer from here on out. Just a warning for people who hate reading.

So deserving of its records. I never knew it did that great, but so glad it did! Truly, Madly, Deeply brings back so many good memories for me when I was a child. :'( That song will always have a hold on me.

Truly was never my favorite, but I never thought it was a bad song either. LOL, at this point off the top of my head, I know four of the remaining five. Technically I could try to pin down the remaining song, but I kind of don't want to.

So deserving of its records. I never knew it did that great, but so glad it did! Truly, Madly, Deeply brings back so many good memories for me when I was a child. :'( That song will always have a hold on me. It's super nostalgic for me too :) One of the reasons it's so high on the list! I've grown to love it now more than ever, but it's always been my favorite love song. Truly was never my favorite, but I never thought it was a bad song either. LOL, at this point off the top of my head, I know four of the remaining five. Technically I could try to pin down the remaining song, but I kind of don't want to. I've always loved it, but I've grown to adore it more and more as I get older. Possibly because songs like it have basically died out. It will always have that timeless sound to it, but I can still place it in the 90's music category with ease. Now I'm curious! My Top 4 are probably the ones you can pin down actually. #5 might be the unknown one. I wonder where Crash & Burn is placed. In a deserving place :) Hopefully it's one of your favorites ;)

#5“Gunning Down Romance”Love and other moments are just chemical reactions in your brainTop 5!!! This flawless gem is my favorite non-single from Affirmation and is nothing short of pure and utter perfection. I don’t know if I can even put into words just how insanely amazing this song really is. Lyrically this is by far the best song on the album, and is definitely Top 3 as far as the best written Savage Garden songs go. It’s difficult for me to pick a favorite lyric because the whole song is one big favorite lyric, honestly. The way this song builds is incredible, and I have to say this; listen to this song with earphones. There is so much you’ll miss if you don’t. The song will completely suck you in if you let it. I know when I listen to it without earphones it’s not the same. This song has so much feeling and intensity that’s really hard to put into words; you just have to experience it. That’s kind of what this song is, an experience. It’s so much more than just a song, because there is so much to it. I can get so easily lost in this song and I end up putting it on repeat and becoming just obsessed with it, to the point where nothing else exists but the song. The lyrics, the vocals, the instrumentals, the entire production; it can all be picked apart and taken in. The build of the song perfectly reflects the meaning of the song and matches the mood. It starts out basically hating on love and expressing how over it the narrator is, but with each verse comes a little more hope and in the end, “I’m gonna take these broken wings and learn to fly.” Perfect song to start out the Top 5 I say!

Yup, that's the "mystery song". I never could really get into it though.

Yup, that's the "mystery song". I never could really get into it though. I figured it would be. I was going back and forth between that and another song in the Top 5, but I had my cards placed on this one. I figured, since you mentioned earlier that the last half of Affirmation loses you Most of the last half songs grew on me, but this one and "I Don't Know You Anymore" caught my attention instantly. Pretty sure you'll be ok with the rest of the songs. Hint: Only one more non-single left. The rest are singles.

I grew to love "Truly Madly Deeply." I remember the song from the 90s, but I didn't have the appreciation for it that I do now. It's very mellow and simplistic, which might've been a problem that the younger me had with the song. I always did like it, but the more I listened to SG and Darren in general, the better the song got for me. LOVE "Gunning Down Romance", especially when it builds and explodes into melodic heaven. Anyway, I agree with the comment about it being better when you listen to it with headphones. It's great without, but with headphones there's just so much more intensity with the music/melody and it's almost like a completely different listening experience. I can get completely lost in it and it's a pretty awesome. I should have posted his Big Night In performance where he mashed it with "Head Like A Hole" and took the song to a whole new level! So here: Best performance of that song, period. Yes, that performance is AMAZING. It seriously could be my favorite performance of his I've seen yet. Possibly. Libra you should check it out. (and I promise I will leave you alone about this song after this! LOL. ;)
