So I've been putting together countdowns for my favorite artists since I was kid, and it wasn't until I joined this board that I realized other people actually do the same! Well, I finally sat down and actually finished one, so I figure I might as well post it! Since my username is ChicaCherryCola, what better artist to try out this personal chart business with than the flawless Savage Garden!? So I present to you: ChicaCherryCola’s Top 30 Savage Garden Songs Savage Garden is: Flawless vocalist Darren Hayes and the multi-talented instrumentalist Daniel Jones make up this Australian pop duo. These Brisbane boys quickly became one of the most successful bands of the late 90’s and early 2000’s and achieved international success with their albums, Savage Garden and Affirmation. They took over Australia in the mid 90’s and eventually gained attention in America after popular talk show host Rosie O’Donnell began playing their single “I Want You” excessively on her show (this is how I became a fan!). The song began racing up the charts before being officially released in the states and eventually reached #4 on the Billboard charts, giving them almost instant success in the states. They achieved massive success with their love ballads "Truly Madly Deeply" and "I Knew I Loved You" (both reaching #1). Unfortunately, their success was short-lived, as the group officially called it quits in early 2001 after only two studio albums. However, their achievements spoke volumes and they left their mark on the music industry. Darren continued on with a solo career, which, ahem, is still going strong. I could ramble on, but this seems like a pretty short, sweet and to the point introduction for these brilliant fellas. Fun Fact: Darren and Daniel wrote every song they recorded. Usually Darren focused on the lyrics while Daniel perfected the music behind them (as well as lyrics). Dream team! Notable Achievements: They won ten ARIA Music Awards in 1997, the most won in a single night (BOOM!). Their first album, Savage Garden, has been certified 12x platinum in Australia and 7x platinum in the United States. Aaaaand a bunch of other stuff that will be mentioned in the commentary for individual songs. Eligibility: All studio album tracks, including b-sides. Any demos from their pre-Savage Garden days (otherwise known as Bliss), but only the songs that did not make it onto a studio album (the ones that did will already be on the countdown anyway). I also considered quite a few remixes and acoustics, but there is only one song on the countdown that is strictly the acoustic/remix version instead of the studio/single version. However, many remixes and acoustic versions of the songs will be mentioned in the commentary for the songs, because they’re too great to go unmentioned. The chart is based on my favorites, and when that was a challenge I depended on my iTunes play count. Albums:
This indicates how many tracks from each album made it. Affirmation is the only one with every track from the album featured on the countdown. 11 12 5 2 We’ll also take a journey through Darren’s hairstyles in the 90’s… Click on the banners under the song title displaying said hairstyles to get to the music video/song. So, here's to hoping this all works out (this better not flop) and if you're interested follow along! My goal is to post a song a day.

Looking forward to this! Actually, I ain't into Savage Garden's stuff, but I have a friend from school who stans for them, so I know some of their songs. Also, it will be the perfect time to know more about them. Being said that, I really hope "Crash and Burn" to be at least in the Top 5, while "I Knew I Loved You" and "Truly Madly Deeply" in the Top 10.

YES excited for this!! They have so many great songs on their albums. And to say that Darren is an amazing vocalist is a tremendous understatement. Really pumped that all the songs from Affirmation made the cut because it's a really amazing album! Of course Savage Garden is as well. Excited to see where all the songs chart!!

I'm pumped that there are actually people interested! Thank you guys!! I'll try not to give anything away, but "Crash And Burn" is certainly not low on the list! It's up there. I had an emotional breakdown trying to narrow down the Affirmation tracks, so they ended up all making it I always said I could never choose which album was my favorite, but I think I just accidentally did Tomorrow I'm posting the 5 songs that didn't make the cut, but are worth honorable mention!!! And then THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS!

So, to begin I’ll post 5 songs that just missed the final 30, because even though they didn’t quite make it, they are still incredible and worth mention! The titles link to song, except for one. “Secret Silver Gypsy”This was a demo from the days when they were called “Bliss” and although it’s amazing, I picked two other songs from this demo tape for the final list. I have no idea what this song is supposed to mean. It’s just catchy and I enjoy it. These demos are super stripped down and were recorded on tape in 1994 (probably the tape that got them their record deal, there were I think 150 sent out), but they’re kind of, sort of amazing! I'm sorry I don't have a link for this one. I couldn’t find it on YouTube, and I’m too paranoid about copyright infringement to upload a video with the song myself (I use my google account for school- so if anything goes wrong I'm screwed). So you could search the Internet if you’re insanely interested I suppose (if you type in the "Secret Silver Gypsy Savage Garden" into google and hit videos there is one option, but the site is in a different language so I didn't link it). It’s a great song, but it’s not in the Top 30 so I’m not going to worry about it. Still, I apologize "Aubergine Girl"Another Bliss demo that didn’t quite make it, but this one actually got extremely close, because I love it (this one's on YouTube!!!). The song is basically about a boy who desperately wants to be with a girl who doesn’t give him the time of day. The lyrics are great, as usual. The first time I heard this song I googled what Aubergine meant, because I didn’t think you could describe a girl as being purple, but whatever I’m stupid, and all the results said it meant a purple eggplant and I haven’t stopped calling this song “Purple Eggplant Girl” instead of actual title ever since then. I don't know why that's important, but deal with it. Then I thought about it and purple is the color of royalty, so he’s probably just calling her royalty or whatever. I still can’t get over the eggplant part. "Santa Monica"This is the only Savage Garden song I can say I don’t particularly care for. I still like it to an extent, but it’s definitely my least favorite out of everything else they’ve done. The lyrics are cool, but the melody is so boring that even Darren’s voice doesn’t pick up the interest for me, which is excessively rare. Usually even when the melody is a drag, Darren can easily lay his voice to the song and it becomes instantly flawless. This is the only exception to that rule. So it for sure did not make my top 30. "Promises"This is definitely a great song, but I think I’ll always be slightly bitter towards it, because it was only supposed to be a b-side. This song wasn’t put on the Australian release of their first album. “All Around Me” and “Mine” were featured on the Aussie Version of Savage Garden and they are nothing short of flawless, majestic, brilliant songs. Well, they were taken off the U.S. version of the album and “Promises” was put in their place. Something about “All Around Me” being too silly and “Mine” having the lines “crosses and crucifixes” in it. Stupid mumbo jumbo. So I’m more than a little bitter about this, because I wouldn’t have traded those two songs for this in a million years. So my bitterness left this song out of the top 30 and put the other two safely in (since they were left out of the U.S. party the first time! GAH!). "I'll Bet He Was Cool"It was so incredibly hard to leave this song out, so we’re calling this #30.5. I really adore this song, but compared to others, it just fell short of the top 30 :( I’m displeased about this, but I’m also happy with my top 30. Still, listen to this song; it’s INCREDIBLE! Unfortunately, this was only a b-side. I would have traded “Santa Monica” for this gem in a heartbeat. It's a little strange, and it's hard to explain why it's so great, but it just has this cool sound to it. Tomorrow I'll post #30 and the real countdown will begin! Their best songs are yet to come!

Yeah, this is definitely one of my least favorites on their debut. Probably this and "Break Me Shake Me". Glad I'm not alone! Aw, "Break Me Shake Me" is one of my favorites Aw, I'm sorry! I think I'd love "Promises" more had it not replaced two of my favorite songs (I do really love the song itself). Initially it was on the countdown, but it got knocked down after I decided to include their Bliss demos. Hopefully I haven't posted your favorite yet! Thank you for commenting by the way

"Secret Silver Gypsy" is an interesting listen, but I really like it. I'm okay with it not making the countdown though. I love "Aubergine Girl" and I was hoping it was one of the two demos to make the countdown . Anyway, I'm really glad you explained the lyrics and title because I had noooo clue. So he wants her to be his purple eggplant girl? haha. It must be something conceptual like you said. Darren is great at doing conceptual. I actually do like "Santa Monica" quite a bit now I actually enjoy the melody and don't mind it being a little drab. My favorite line is the "I can be a super model or Norman Mailer, and you wouldn't know the difference" because I love the arrangement and how Darren sings it. Overall though, it's not one of my favorite SG songs so I'm not upset it didn't make the top 30. I love "Promises" so much and would have loved to have seen it make the countdown. One of my favorites too. I especially love the verse. The chorus loses me a little, but still a great song. I was afraid this might be one that wasn't gonna make the cut. At least it got an honorable mention though! "I'll Bet He Was Cool" is an interesting song both melodically and lyrically, but I'm on the fence about it and I'm not sure why. There's just something about it... I'm fine with this one not making it. Dumb question, but what do you all think the song about? . I mean, it seems really straightforward but I'm wondering if there's some double or hidden meaning or something?

#30“Universe” This time I’m gonna make sure I look out for meThe music video for this song may have been a contributing factor when I was considering its place in the countdown. The song is really beautiful, but also pretty simple with kind of a funky sound. The video was probably intended to be taken seriously, however I laugh hysterically at it. Every. Time. It’s quite, um, sleezy? I know it’s probably supposed to be as sexy as the song is, but it’s really just weird. Basically they’re in a sleezy nightclub where Darren is a karaoke king/pimp and Daniel is a hardcore womanizer/creep. Darren described the video as “glamour in the gutter”…uh, ok. Maybe I’m the only one who finds this even remotely amusing, but Darren is wearing an absurdly large purple ring (essentially a pimp ring) throughout the video and I find the urge to yell “PIMP HAND!!!” (exactly 4:00 in pause it!) whenever he lifts said hand. Now that you’re aware of the pimp hand, you’re welcome, enjoy. I also have to point out Darren’s use of a toy viewfinder in the beginning; hello nostalgia! He also wisely chooses his toy viewfinder over the sleezy chick, priorities guys, priorities- he has them. Also, for the love of God will everyone please look in the background of Darren at 2:38 (PAUSE IT!). You will not be disappointed. The video, in my opinion, takes away from the actual song slightly, because I am no longer able to take the song all that seriously and like I said, it is a very beautiful song as far as the melody and vocals go. It’s really sexy, obviously, and Darren knows how to work that, clearly. His vocals are flawless and the main reason the song even made it into the final 30 (video aside). The song only made it to #26 on the ARIA charts. It’s not a song that I can listen to as often as their other flawless songs, so it’s a good way to start off the top 30. And if nothing else the video and my commentary will hopefully entertain!

So he wants her to be his purple eggplant girl? haha. It must be something conceptual like you said. Darren is great at doing conceptual. I know and it almost did. It was honestly really hard for me to leave it out, but I think you'll agree with the two I did include. "Aubergine Girl" ranked number 3 in the demo list. I knew Aubergine meant purple, but then I started questioning my own knowledge after I heard this song because it made little sense to me. The eggplant part just threw me off even further. Let's go with it means royalty. That makes the most sense, especially if we're putting our Darren thinking caps on! I like it too, just not nearly enough to include it and it was the first to go when elimination rounds came up. I love the lyrics, and Darren's vocals are great, but it's still my least favorite. I knew people would disagree with this one the most, but I had such a hard time narrowing down 30 songs that I just could not bring myself to place this one. Like I said, things might be different had it not replaced two of their most flawless songs and turned them into b-sides. Still bitter, still so bitter. I love how you knew it probably wouldn't make it, as I've probably ranted about my disappointment regarding this issue to you numerous times. I remember you ranting about how much you loved this song, what changed? Then again we were watching Too Close For Comfort and he was performing it live in a tank top... So that could have swayed your words, slightly. Want my take on it? It's similar to the meaning behind "One of Us" ya know? Like if God or Jesus walked among us this is how we would see him or it's kind of asking what would you do? How would you react? You could be on the fence about his vocals in this one, because I know that's one of my contributing factors.

The PIMP HAND video! haha! It's hilarious. It doesn't do any favors for the song though. I like Universe, but it isn't one of my favorites. Darren is great at doing sexy songs lol so he makes me like the song a lot more than I would have if someone else sang it. It's very good, but I'm okay with it only coming in at 30. As for I'll Bet He Was Cool, I do love the actual melody and I remember loving that performance. I listened to it again and I like that wayyyyy better than the studio version (and not just because Darren was rocking a tank top haha.) I think you hit the nail on the head with the vocals on this one! The way they're produced and processed I think turns me off. It doesn't flatter his amazing voice and honestly I think it makes him sound a little sarcastic and douchey, which doesn't match with the lyrics at all. Live it is an amazing song though. As for the lyrics, I just got thinking about them so I looked online on this site and there were comments discussing the meaning and I found it interesting. I'll just post the link if anyone is interested in reading it. There were only 3 comments. songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858596793/

#29 "I Don't Care" The sunlight warms the faces of the faithless who are waiting
This nugget is a b-side from Affirmation and was later featured on their Truly Madly Completely: The Best of Savage Garden greatest hits compilation, and is absolutely brilliant in my opinion. I know it’s low chart-wise, but that’s because they simply have too many brilliant songs. This song can stand alone as a truly flawless song, but mixed in with all their others, this is an appropriate number. I’ve always loved the train sounds in the background, because it adds to the mood. It feels real, as though you’re reading Darren’s thoughts, as he’s mindlessly riding through cities deep in thought (that’s creepy, but whatever, I don’t care - oooh punny). My interpretation is that it’s talking about trying to get some meaning out of life and contemplating the meaning of what’s real in this world. It describes that feeling of being numb, essentially, and caring to a fault. Like the majority of their music, this song is incredibly easily to relate to and people can take from it what they will.

"I Don't Care" is excellent. The lyrics and music match so well it's ridiculous and it's really flattering for his vocals. I love how every other line in the chorus is so soft and angelic. It creates a really nice contrast and is really pleasing to the ear. I also like train sound effects- it added a really cool and important element to the song. And on a little bit of a side note, the banner is perfect. That's a really great look for Darren.

LOL, I really need to pay more attention to those banners doubling as links. Hmmmmm. Pretty good song, but it definitely contrasts with most of the Affirmation album's tracks.

Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaha......OMG. I couldn't resist checking out the video after reading this. Weird is definitely the way to describe it. This song has never really been one of my favorites from their debut, but surprisingly it's kind of held up well over the years. I got a tad bit carried away with describing the video I'm glad I'm not the only one who found it weird, because a lot of people thought it was just so sexy and I'm going "did we watch the same video?" LOL, I really need to pay more attention to those banners doubling as links. Hmmmmm. Pretty good song, but it definitely contrasts with most of the Affirmation album's tracks. I'm proud of myself for actually figuring out how to link the videos to an image. That was an adventure. Actually, I never even thought about it in relation to Affirmation, because I always related it to Savage Garden for some reason. Now it's making sense after you said that. It really doesn't fit. I can't tell if it's just because of the random things I made funny, or if the video is actually taking away from the song. I'm glad you're not disappointed yet haha. I liked the lengthy thoughts about it being about celebrity and the idea of fame. Darren would do that and he's done it many times before in his solo work. I think I'd lean towards that being the main meaning, but I wish I could find something on Darren talking about it. That'd be an interesting song to get insight into. "I Don't Care" is excellent. The lyrics and music match so well it's ridiculous and it's really flattering for his vocals. I love how every other line in the chorus is so soft and angelic. And on a little bit of a side note, the banner is perfect. That's a really great look for Darren. I listen to it to relax quite a bit, because it is soft and almost angelic, like you said. I told you there would be a journey through Darren's hairstyles! Haha! I tried to match the pic to the year of the song because I'm OCD like that. On another side note to yours, it's one of my favorite pictures, ever.

#28“This Side of Me”I want to find that door and go within
This is a b-side from “Universe” (also featured on Truly Madly Completely) and I’m convinced that they were basically just trying to turn people on with that particular single. I’ve already gone over “Universe” and all it’s sexiness… well take that times about 10 and you have this glorious b-side. Darren’s vocals are spot-on and the song is nothing short of seductive. There is so much about this song that I adore. The melody is gorgeous and paired with Darren’s falsetto greatness, yup, good times. My favorite part of the song is the entire “I want to stitch my clothes in sin and in the dark I want to find that door and go within” bit, basically because of Darren’s voice. I don’t know maybe it’s just me, but that part is glorious and stands out the most for me, vocally at least.

I dunno, something about the melody for "This Side of Me" clashes with trying to pull off a seductive vibe IMO.

I dunno, something about the melody for "This Side of Me" clashes with trying to pull off a seductive vibe IMO. I know what you're saying and agree to a certain extent, but for me it's not so much the actual melody but the instrumentation. It's a little louder and harsher in parts (not in a bad way, though. It's a REALLY well put together song and it flows just fine IMO.) But I think it takes away from the sexiness slightly. Darren's voice, for me anyway, certainly makes up for it though. He knows how to sing a song, for sure. He did a good job of portraying seductive, even if the music did clash with the mood a little. I love the song though, especially the chorus. Very pretty.

Melody, instrumentation...LOL, basically we both agree it's the music and not Darren's singing that's ill-fitting with the vibe.

#27“Memories Are Designed To Fade”You get your kicks from the ghost of a memory So busy turning away from reality
This is yet another b-side, this one from their first album, Savage Garden. It appeared on the single for “To The Moon And Back” as well as a Japanese compilation album titled Truly Madly Deeply: Ultra Rare Tracks. I don’t really know where that came from, but it’s a great album for fans that features a load of b-sides, acoustic versions of their singles and bunch of remixes. Some of these versions will appear in the comments of future songs on the countdown, because this album had amazing extra versions of some of my top songs. Anyway, this song has such a funky sound to it and is almost 80’s-esque. I adore Darren’s falsetto notes in the background that are almost unreal, especially for a dude (no offense to dudes). I’m not disappointed it stayed a b-side instead of an album track, because even though it’s a great song, it’s not a b-side I probably would have picked over the others to be on an album. The YouTube video for this is atrocious. It's just a fan video with the song thrown in, but it's the only video I could find with this song. So just ignore the video, or if you're into that type of stuff watch it I guess? Either way I'm only linking it for the song (which the audio is also not to my standard of quality, ugh).

I'm a huge Savage Garden fan, so I'll definitely look forward to the rest of the songs. They were perhaps my 2nd favorite band as a child (Down to the Backstreet Boys). My personal favorite is "Truly Madly Deeply", so in specific looking forward to that song. ;)

#26“Tell Me It’s OK”A world without sorrow is a day with no tomorrowBefore Savage Garden existed, Darren and Daniel went by the name of ‘Bliss’ (Savage Garden came from The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice), but this was for a very short time while they recorded their first demo tape. This song is from the demo tape and was scrapped, so it never made it onto their first studio album. Shameful. I adore the sound of this song and I can’t get enough of Darren’s vocals, so I’m quite upset this never made it farther than a demo. I would have loved to see this one as a b-side, or even an album track, with the right production of course. Thank God someone put this entire demo tape on the interwebs, because it’s a gem.

"Memories Are Designed to Fade" has a really cool sound to it! My favorite part is when they integrated Darren's vocals into the background music. It sounded great and gave the song a really nice feel.
"Tell Me It's OK" sounds really good and I also wish it would have gotten recorded and put on SOMETHING. Anything really. The music is really good and with the right production this song would be all-around excellent. It's a great song even as it is though.

That's what I was getting at, you just worded it nicer haha. I told you you'd be fine with the 2 Bliss Demos I have on the countdown. Not sure how you'll react to the higher placed one, but hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as this one.

#25“Fire Inside The Man”I’d do anything just to know that I can hold on to youThis was a b-side for “I Want You” from their first album. It was also a Bliss demo and that version is very similar, but the production is softer. It's just as wonderful as the studio version. There really isn’t much I can say about this song, as I just find it catchy and fun. The lyrics are pretty straightforward. It was also written by Darren for his wife at the time. Darren's vocals are soft and wonderful. It’s just a very cute, sweet, fun-loving song that makes me smile every time I hear it. I just love it and I can't really quite explain why. It makes you feel all bubbly, so enjoy!
