Pretty sure you'll be ok with the rest of the songs. Hint: Only one more non-single left. The rest are singles. LOL yup, I thought so. The non-single is (assuming I didn't accidentally miss it coming up earlier) one of my favorites.

I grew to love "Truly Madly Deeply." I remember the song from the 90s, but I didn't have the appreciation for it that I do now. It's very mellow and simplistic, which might've been a problem that the younger me had with the song. I always did like it, but the more I listened to SG and Darren in general, the better the song got for me. LOVE "Gunning Down Romance", especially when it builds and explodes into melodic heaven. Anyway, I agree with the comment about it being better when you listen to it with headphones. It's great without, but with headphones there's just so much more intensity with the music/melody and it's almost like a completely different listening experience. I can get completely lost in it and it's a pretty awesome. It was literally EVERYWHERE in the 90s! Haha! Basically it's one of those songs that you still love when it comes out, but it as it ages, it gets better and more impressive. Mellow songs when you're younger are like "uhhhggggghhhhh" haha, because you just want something fun when you're a kid. I understand. "explodes into melodic heaven" is the official definition of "Gunning Down Romance"...but seriously! It will forever be a standout for me from Affirmation. LOL yup, I thought so. The non-single is (assuming I didn't accidentally miss it coming up earlier) one of my favorites. If it's the one I'm thinking you're thinking then I am pleased. I adore it so, so much that I'd be devastated if anyone commented on it with a "meh, it's ok"...oh, oh no, it's fantastic. Which will now lead me to the song I'm referring to at #4...........

#4“Carry On Dancing”You’re never safe ‘til you see the dawnI have such a soft spot for this song. This was actually one of the first Savage Garden songs I heard, right behind “I Want You” and I cannot listen to it without feeling nostalgic. When my mom bought their first album (just because we both had an obsession with “I Want You” – Thanks Rosie!) I may have taken it over and this was one of the songs my young self went to excessively. It was always “Track 6” because that’s how I remembered my favorites, by their track number. Before the days of mp3 players that told you what you were listening to, you had to count how many times you hit the skip button to get to your favorite song Anyway, this song has the coolest sound to it. It’s sexy, it’s fun, and it’s melodic. What’s not to love? The violins give this dark sound to it, which usually that's not what you associate with violins, but somehow that happened with this song. Plus Darren breaks out his Aussie accent for once with the “Move, closer, passion, stronger” bit. He hides it so well in everything else, so this pleases me excessively. I’m more than a little obsessed with Darren’s voice in this one as well, good lord man! Almost certain this song was inspired by The Vampire Chronicles, where they also got their name. Which makes a lot of sense if you pay attention to the insanely awesome lyrics. I could probably listen to this song on repeat for days. This is definitely my favorite non-single from Savage Garden. Here's the Demo version Which is also pretty great, but I definitely think the production in the studio album version just ties the whole song together perfectly and is really what makes it flawless. Clearly Darren's Aussie accent was NOT hidden in this version hehe. I also quite enjoy this live performance... quite a lot.

I think you'll be pleased with where I placed "Crash And Burn". It seems so, so far. I love "Affirmation" but compared to everything else I had a hard time placing it higher, because there were so many songs I couldn't place lower, haha. I know what you mean. Don't worry. I always have issues with fan favorites from a lot of my favorite artists. It's simply the production that throws me off for "I Knew I Loved You" and knowing the background story. I think I compared it to "Truly" far too much and it's value quickly decreased after that. O. Good to know that. YEESSS!! to the "I Want You" shoutout! Finally someone acknowledges that gem :) And thank you! I'm having fun with it! You're welcome.
• I've just listened to "Hold Me". It's really good. As a consequence, I saw the video because of the comment you wrote. I can't stop laughing at it. Sorry Justin • "Truly Madly Deeply" at #6. Looks like I was right with this being in the Top 10 Anyway, I really like it and I think it's a good spot for it.

Yup. Always loved this song. It and "Promises" I used to listen to on repeat from time to time. Thank god or I would have been upset, haha I've never listened to "Promises" on repeat, but I have definitely overplayed "Carry On Dancing" and never gotten sick of it one bit!

#3“To The Moon And Back”Love is like a barren place and reaching out for human faith Is like a journey I just don’t have a map forI spent hours trying to determine this songs place on the countdown and initially I thought it was #2, but I let my emotions get in the way, as well as a massive over-analysis process and it slid into #3. That should let you know just how amazing #2 is though! Alright, so this song was huge success in Australia, where it became their first #1 (thank God it did well somewhere!), but didn’t quite get the same recognition in the U.S. which I find absolutely absurd. It only reached #37 when it was first released to the U.S. market. After the success of “Truly” they re-released a shorter edit of the song hoping it would chart higher than it’s first attempt. It made it to #24, which is much better than attempt one, but still that’s a pretty hard flop for a song with high expectations. The song deserved so much more success than it received in the U.S. I can’t even handle it. It is their biggest hit to date in the U.K. though, so its re-release paid off there! There are three versions of the music video (they seriously had high expectations): Australian (my personal favorite), European, Everybody Else. There was another version as well, but that was scrapped before even becoming a thing. The lyrics are what really make this song what it is. I don’t understand how two human beings so young can write a song like this. They would have both been around 20 or so when they wrote this song and to me that’s incredible, especially looking at the young acts today and immaturity level, not to mention lack of originality, of lyrics these days (sue me, it’s my opinion). If you want a song that shows off their songwriting talents, this is it. Actually, if you want a song that shows off their musical talent in general, this is it. I’m sure a lot of people would disagree, but I’m sticking to all that. This is one of the best songs ever written, period. They had such high expectations for this song, and they should have, they knew they had something special and fought to put it out there for people to hear. It should have smashed, but at least they tried. The instrumental for this song is also something that deserves attention! I mean honestly, have you heard it? There’s also this absolutely flawless performance of the song that was definitely a contributing factor in its placement. I present to you, my favorite performance ever, by anyone: Savage Garden at the 1997 ARIA Awards. I think I’ve listened to this performance more than I’ve listened to the original at this point. This is such an incredible version of the song. I’m a sucker for violins, so that could have contributed to my obsession with this particular performance. So between the original studio version and the flawless ARIA performance, this song is very well deserving of its #3 position. In my opinion, it’s one of the greatest pop songs ever released. So, there.

Had you heard "Hold Me" before? Bahaha, it was hilarious!! Me turning Darren into a child abductor wasn't much better so Justin doesn't have to feel so bad haha. Actually, no. It was the first time I listened to "Hold Me" and I really like it. I'm glad you agree with it's placement! There was no way it wasn't going to make top 10! Thank you! And I definitely agree. "Truly Madly Deeply" is one of their well-known songs, so it's good to see a Top 10 placement for it.
So, your Top 2 is next and it's a lock that they are going to be the remaining songs I mentioned before unless anything really weird happens. I was going to write them, but I think it's better not to do that. Anyway, so excited to see how this is going to turn honestly. You know which song I'm rooting for and I would like to see that atop, but I guess it's going to be the other one.

Yeah, at this point I wasn't really going to complain no matter which one comes out on top. Sure I have one song I'd root for most, but at this point there's not really much room for disappointment.

I'm too lazy to quote, but I'm replying to the two posts above, haha (also too lazy to tag). Juan Carlos: Hopefully you'll be pleased with the top 2...I am...obviously, haha. I THINK I know which one you're rooting for, but I'm not completely positive, but I'm sure I'll find out when I post #2 haha. Oh and I'm glad you really liked "Hold Me" because it's pretty underrated and one of their best, honestly. Libra: YES! At least I did something right with my Top 3 I also have no idea which one you're rooting for, but either way it clearly made it far!

"Carry On Dancing" is amazing and would certainly most definitely be in my top 5 as well. It's hard for me to estimate where I would put songs unless I actually made a list, but that one I know for sure. Everything about it is pretty wonderful- the music, arrangement, and vocals all get an A+ from me. Just a really cool sound all the way around.
"To the Moon and Back" is another song that I can guarantee would make my top 5. I think I would have to put it higher than "Carry On Dancing," just like Chica did. There's many things about this song that I really love. First and foremost, the melody and vocal arrangement are deliciously soft and beautiful, but haunting as well. They compliment the lyrics very well. Which brings me to the next thing I love about the song, and that is the lyrics. The song has a relatively simple meaning, but the lyrics are so poetic and create a lot of cool imagery in your mind as you listen to it. And last but certainly not least, Darren's vocals. Great, as usual, and he pulls off these types of melodies very well. Flawless vocals + excellent melody/production + striking lyrics = pure perfection.

#2“Crash And Burn”If you need to fall apart Well I can mend a broken heartIt's my birthday, so instead of posting tomorrow like I usually do I'm posting this today, because it's the most sentimental song on my countdown. ^^^That's Darren by the way so it's even more relevant^^^ This was the third single from Affirmation and without a doubt the best. It made it to number one in several countries, but only reached #24 in the U.S. This song is the closest to my heart out of anything they’ve ever done. I cannot even express how utterly; hopelessly obsessed I was with this song when it was first released. It was so bad. The first time I heard this nugget was while I was on the last few days of my Christmas Break back in 2000. I was waiting for my mom to get ready for work, so I was doing what every kid did back then (probably not) and was watching early morning music videos on VH1 (I did this excessively), back when that existed. I think this was the actually the first song of my childhood that I ever excessively obsessed over, because I remember this exact moment so vividly it’s almost stupid. I have a ridiculous photographic memory, so for years I carried the music video around with me in my head just longing to see it again, because I thought it was amazing, especially in 2000, ya know with all it’s crazy special effects. I was sheltered ok. Then came that one time I discovered YouTube existed. I literally watched this video on repeat for what seemed like hours (ok it actually probably was) and I felt like an 8-year-old watching VH1 all over again. I think it was mainly the melody that captured my attention at first, because it’s literally the perfect melody. It was like nothing I’d ever heard before, and to this day not many songs have had the gravitational pull this song had on me the first time I heard it. And that pull lasted for years; in fact, it still hasn’t let me go. Ok, time to get personal. The song took on a different life when I hit middle school and my stepfather’s alcoholism and verbal abuse hit an all-time high. I felt like the only person in the world and he made me feel so small and worthless. This song was literally my best friend. I spent hours listening to this song and bawling asking why. Savage Garden’s music has always been there for me and because the songs are so easy to relate to, they became therapy for me. Darren’s voice could always calm me down when I felt like I was spinning out of control and I believed the words of this song. It got me through my teenage years when not a lot could. Sometimes, I can listen to this song and just genuinely enjoy it, but other times it reminds me of that time and I can’t help but get a little choked up. This song became a part of me, became a part of me growing up and I’ll never let that go. I still look to this song for guidance when I feel like I’m falling apart or feel like I can’t handle life. It somehow manages to give me strength every time. It’s so much more than just a song for me and I’m so grateful that it exists. This is why Savage Garden has remained my favorite band for most of my life. You’re probably wondering how this isn’t number one after all that. There was a lot of consideration made when I compiled this list, and I tried to keep emotions somewhat out of it. However, my emotions and nostalgia made this gem #2. “To The Moon And Back” ALMOST had that honor. I don't think many, if anyone, will complain at how high this made it. This pleases me, because it's so underrated. I just noticed that the video finally made it to over a million views on YouTube and the last time I had looked up the video it hadn't even reached a million. Shameful is what that is. So let's give some praise to this flawless song!!! Annnnd GO! Notable acoustic version!! - I love this one to an excessively high extent. Live version I also quite enjoy!

Oh! It's so bittersweet. I was rooting this whole time for "Crash and Burn" to be atop, but I can't deny that it's so great to see where it's placed. I wasn't expecting it to be so high because I also consider "Crash and Burn" as an underrated song and I still don't know why. The lyrics, the music video and the whole message around it (or do I have to say everything about the song at this point?) are amazing and being summarized with the "You're not alone" phrase makes it even better. Perfection! As a side note, it's so sad to read about your personal problems during your teenage years. It broke my heart. However, it's so good (in a positive way, of course) to see that you could overcome these difficulties and Savage Garden's music was there for you. A big hug for you.

The intensity of Darren in the "Crash and Burn" video though. Wow. There's two things that I find really cool about this song- the melody in the verse does a great job of enhancing the sadness and pain depicted in the lyrics, and the melody in the chorus is able to enhance the positive and inspirational lyrics. All the while, the song flows wonderfully from beginning to end! It's an extremely well crafted song and a lot of thought (and talent) was put into creating it. The song has an excellent message and is really comforting. The melody and production are spot on.

That's the one I'd be rooting for most. Can't believe it took actually getting to the end to realize the obvious #1 though. Do you mean you honestly didn't realize the number one song until now or that you didn't realize THAT song was number one? I honestly didn't think anyone would question it for a second...because like you said, it's quite obvious hehe. If I didn't have such an intense love for my #1 this definitely would top the chart. It's my most loved song with sentimental meaning and value to it, but my #1 is just on top because it's literally the greatest song I have ever heard and has been my favorite song since the moment I heard it. That's timeless right there haha. I'm glad I didn't flub up the commentary! I was hoping it would add to the song not take away from it, so thank you! And you think for the awesome birthday message in my Happy Bday thread! I loved it! Oh! It's so bittersweet. I was rooting this whole time for "Crash and Burn" to be atop, but I can't deny that it's so great to see where it's placed. I wasn't expecting it to be so high because I also consider "Crash and Burn" as an underrated song and I still don't know why. However, it's so good (in a positive way, of course) to see that you could overcome these difficulties and Savage Garden's music was there for you. A big hug for you. It was bittersweet for me actually as well. Oh it's horribly underrated and it bothers me, because it's by far their best song from Affirmation. I am still devastated that it didn't do as well as "I Knew I Loved You" and that's because of everything you said. The song is the whole package, including the music video. That's definitely a video that emphasizes the meaning of the song. It's really intense. I ADORE the end of the video: "Communicate, any way, any how. Perfect ending to a song with such a huge meaning. I've grown a lot since then and I can look back on it and know that it was supposed to happen to make me stronger. Thank you though, seriously it means a lot! And thank you for commenting That also means a lot to me! The song has an excellent message and is really comforting. The melody and production are spot on. I know. Usually I would be a little irked by how enhanced they made his eyes and such, but with this video it needed to happen. The intense blue just adds so much to the video. I could not agree with you more. The song is both positive and negative, but it's more although there's negativity all around us there are also reasons to be positive. I love that his voice stays so soft and melodic throughout the song as well, because it adds to the comfort of the whole song.

(I really will be posting a detailed reply in here sometime soon. She's going to post it as your 30th birthday present. Didn't she tell you? (I really will be posting a detailed reply in here sometime soon. I'd much rather do that than write papers for school, but alas, my degree isn't contingent upon replying to your Savage Garden thread.) I've been procrastinating because I don't want it to be over yet! I'm not ready for all this Savage Garden goodness to end! (Plus Stevie Jo and The Voice took over my life.)It's the end of the semester, I'm right there with you. Effing projects and due dates everywhere.

#1“I Want You”Sweet like a chica-cherry-cola! (duh) Honestly, did anyone even question this for a second? This flawless song is what made me a Savage Garden fan in the first place and has remained my favorite song of all time since then. Does anything get better than this? This is the song that started it all, for me and for them. Rosie O’Donnell played the song daily on her talk show, which gave them and the song massive popularity. The song made it to #4 in both Australia and America (#1 in Canada), which for a debut isn’t too shabby, huh? I feel like this song is the definition of the 90’s and is literally the most nostalgic song for me. I cannot stay in a bad mood if I hear this song. This song prompted my mom to buy their album (because she thought they were sexy – I’m not even remotely kidding) and unknowingly bring out the inner fanatic in her child. There is nothing about this song I don’t absolutely adore. It reminds me of my childhood, back when everything was simple and carefree. Plus, the album came out in the spring, so as a result it was basically the soundtrack to my 1997 summer. I would beg my mom to play it whenever we got into her car. Fun Fact: I thought Darren was a girl, because all I saw was the album cover. So I went through my life (ok more like a month) thinking he was a chick until the video was released and I was like “oop, he’s just a really pretty boy.” Then all of a sudden he got really hot, funny how that happens after you figure out someone’s gender * laughs awkwardly * I live a life of awkward moments. Also, chica cherry cola isn’t a thing, it’s Darren stuttering over “cherry cola” and now the rest is history. So the meaning of this song is kind of ridiculous and the whole song is littered with sexual innuendos, which should be obvious. It’s about meeting someone in a dream and becoming hopelessly infatuated with them (let’s be real this song is about a wet dream) and basically mourning them when you wake up, because they don’t exist. In every live version of the song you’ll hear Darren sing “cause I got sick this morning baby, don’t you know a sea was storming deep inside of me” and to me that helps with understanding the meaning of the song, so I wish it was in the studio version. The fast pace of the song I’ve always felt was intentional, because dreams escape your memory so quickly after you wake up that you try and remember everything as quickly as possible before you forget. Only Darren could make a song about a wet dream have lyrical depth. There are two amazing videos for this song. The first extremely low budget Australian Version, which cracks me up immensely and the more thought-out international version (banner). The first one has what I like to call, a ten second ode to Darren’s hair, at the end of it. It’s just a zoomed in shot of Darren’s hair blowing in the wind and I could not stop laughing the first time I saw it. I recommend paying attention to Darren’s eyebrows in the other version (specifically during the “can be likened to a deep sea diver who was swimming with a raincoat” bit)… it’s, um, good times. It was actually just his nerves and someone working with them told him to knock it off apparently, and he was really upset about it because it was completely unintentional. Most of his eyebrow twitches were taken out during the editing process, dammit. It's really hard to actually pinpoint what I adore about this song actually. It's flawless? That's really what it comes down to! There is something about the production, the melody, the vocal arrangement, the vocals in general... everything....that just ties this song together and makes it literally the perfect song, in my opinion. Apart from "Sweet like a chica cherry cola" my favorite part of the song itself is "come stand a little bit closer, breathe in and get a bit higher, you'll never know what hit you when I get to you." There is something about that bit that absolutely slays me. Specifically the way he sings "higher" and I don't quite know why. It's just what he does with his voice with that word that sounds so wonderful to me. Of course the chorus is also brilliant melody-wise. The song is unique and fun, while still keeping that conceptual meaning I know and love about SG's music. This song makes me feel like I'm on top of the world whenever I hear it. It's literally the perfect song in my opinion and it may very well be my forever favorite of all time. 16 years and counting is pretty intense (just like my love for this song mwahaha). Here are some of my favorite versions/performances of this flawless song: MTV Performance - AcousticAcousticHard Rock Performance - For the love of god WATCH THIS ONE. Quite possibly one of their best performances, ever...Well maybe one of Darren's best during the SG days. Daniel doesn't do much on stage This Nugget
I have always adored what Darren does with the vocals in the second verse when he performs the song live. Some Notable Remixes: Sash Radio RemixBastone Club MixSo that’s my countdown :) I hope everyone enjoyed it and learned a little something new about these incredible guys. Thank you SO much for all your comments and thoughts. I had an absurd amount of fun with this countdown and I plan on doing more in the near future.
