Carrie Underwood- All American Girl I realize the concept was supposed to match the light-hearted tone of the video, but it just didn't work for me. It came across as cheaply made and cheesy to me. Carrie Underwood- Just A Dream I found this one to be underwhelming, and it didn't quite match the emotional impact of the song for me. Dixie Chicks- Top Of The World
This one also didn't pack much an emotional punch for me, or do justice to the song itself. I'm generally not a fan of artists playing characters in their own videos, either. Oh hell no! That's a great music video, I like how they had it set up like The Hours. (and yes I understand you have a right to your opinion.) But in all seriousness that is one of their best videos in my opinion.

Oh, yes. "Radar." I imagined something dark, sexy, and grimy and we got mansions and horses. Boring, but more importantly, does not fit the song at all.
A few other songs I like with very disappointing videos:
Madonna: "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" - Boring as hell.
Madonna: "Fever" - Camp overload.
Janet: "Go Deep" - I mean with a song like this, it's probably going to revolve around some sort of party, but this video just doesn't work.
Janet: "All For You" - I do love the dance breakdown but some of the imagery here is just nauseating.
TLC: "Hands Up" + "Damaged" - It's one thing to have a song without Left Eye, but to actually see that she's not there is almost painful to watch, in more ways than one.
Whitney: "It's Not Right But It's Okay" + "I Learned From the Best" - Great songs with boring (and slightly weird in the case of the former) videos.
Whitney: "Didn't We Almost Have It All" - Live videos are boring in general, but I really don't like that they used the live audio for the video.
Lady Gaga: All videos after "Bad Romance" w/ exceptions of "Judas" and to a lesser extent "Telephone" and "Edge of Glory." - I appreciate the effort she puts into her videos, but her videos (particularly the ones from later albums) just don't entertain me, with a few exceptions. "Alejandro" was the only one I out-right hated, but the last time I truly enjoyed a Gaga video was "Judas."
Katy Perry - All videos after "Firework" w/ exception of "Wide Awake." - Again, never really been a big fan of her videos in general.
Edit: OH. I know that no Britney fans here will agree with me, but "Criminal." It wasn't horrible, but the bit before the song starts is slow, and she seems really stiff when delivering her lines. Once the song starts it's not a bad video, but I don't think it's worthy of the praise I've seen it get on here.

"Papi" by Jennifer Lopez... overt product placements and a plot line that had nothing to do with the song, though the dance scene at the end redeems it a little.

We are talking about music videos that killed the song. Not videos that didn't stop the song from becoming a massive hit or videos which are widely regarded as decent or good videos.

Historical example: "Rock Me Tonite" by Billy Squier. Now, I still like the song myself, but I can see why the video wrecked his career in the 1980s. I never heard that theory! His dancing and gestures are awful. EDIT: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_squierTwo years passed before Squier's next album Signs of Life. It was his third consecutive Platinum album. The album's first single release, "Rock Me Tonite", was Squier's biggest career hit. It reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit the Top 10 of the Cash Box singles chart. It also returned Billy to #1 on the Album Rock Tracks chart in August of 1984. However, the video for the track (directed by Kenny Ortega), which shows Squier dancing around a bedroom in a pink ripped t-shirt (causing some to question his sexuality), was named by Video GaGa as one of "The worst videos of all time".[3] On the VH1 show Ultimate Albums (Def Leppard's "Pyromania" episode), Squier blamed the derailing of his career on the release of the "Rock Me Tonite" video.[4]

His dancing and gestures are awful. True, and the pastel-colored satin sheets don't help...

Adore You by Miley Cyrus. It's like a low budget musical porn. The video didn't match to the song at all.

What kinda porn you watchin'? The low-budget musical kind, apparently. Somebody should make musical pornography. I wouldn't watch it, but just so we have one, you know what I'm saying?

"My Sharona" - Isn't that one infamous for being a great song but horrible music video? Don't think so; anything pre-MTV and the music video boom is probably not in the running. The "Rock Me Tonite" example is likely the definitive one for a video that had a truly detrimental impact for the artist that released it. But to throw another candidate in, David Hasselhoff's version of "Hooked on a Feeling" is a perfectly passable rendition of the Jonathan King arrangement of the song, but the video that went with it insta-killed any credibility.

Lol, I think Radar is a GREAT video. One of the best usage of fusion in video editing. Great job IMO. And If You Seek Amy is the best Britney video by far. I think people didn't understand it, it's absolutely genius. It shows that she's surrounded with these "party spirits" that want her to be this sexual party girl but when the door opens you see there really is no one there. Love it.

Well the song is cheesy, so the video worked. Carrie Underwood- Just A Dream I found this one to be underwhelming, and it didn't quite match the emotional impact of the song for me. lol what The only videos of Carrie's that haven't delivered for me are "I Told You So" (but the video was a live performance, so DGAF), "Undo It" (not the worst concert video I've ever seen, but *yawn*), and the ending to "Blown Away" just because it was so damn anticlimactic. All of her videos seem to follow the songs perfectly, though. Your description to JAD's inclusion baffles me. Anyways, back to the thread's topic. I'm on board with "Dark Horse", "Edge of Glory", and "Alejandro".

Good thread. Some interesting pieces if information there! (Although at the same time some people didn't really get the topic ). Didn't know of that Billy Squier. Good info Agree with the examples on first post plus and others in the thread. I could add Dirrrty... I think the video was maligned and didn't help make the case for Xtina. In a lesser degree I'm a slave 4 u didn't help Brit's case. In both cases songs didn't live to their potentials. I also heard that the Soul Kiss project killed Olivia Newton John's career thanks to her showing a more seductive, sensual image in her video and single cover. I'd say that Feedback put the nail in the coffin to the song especially with Janet dancing over sperm-like liquids In the case of Madonna, I'd say American Life's video contributed to the death of the song and the era backlash for sure. A couple of other videos didn't help the song's performance -but didn't necessarily killed the song: What It Feels Like For A Girl, since the video was quite violent and used the remix version, but I'm not sure about it; Jump it was probably the most radio friendly single of the era and there was lots of expectation for a great video that would help its performance and it was quite underwhelming although in this case the song was released so late that it was practically DOA. Another example: No Doubt's Looking Hot. Video was pulled completely and ND was accused of cultural misappropriation. Oh and JLo's weird video for Do It Well with the whole sexy mama JLo going to a sex club (?) with freaks, sex slaves, to rescue her kid working in the kitchen (WTF?!) turned the song into (more of) a joke. I also read somewhere that these two videos sort of killed these songs -but would be good to have confirmation if anyone knows: - Shania Twain's I'm gonna getcha good! Due to its poppiness/ridiculousness that was considered too much for a country pop act (I like the song and video so I was surprised at the comment and the underperformance of the song) - Debbie Gibson's Anything is possible due to her more sexy image (??!) -U2's Discotheque; it had an initial good reaction but soon after dropped the charts apparently especially after seeing U2 dressed and dancing like Village People.

Miley Cyrus "Adore You." Such a different, classic-sounding song for a pop artist. They she had to go and m******** herself to it on camera. Nobody wants to see that.
Edit: sorry, didn't see somebody had already posted this.

Didn't know about Robbie backlash. That video was a hit back home despite its goriness. Didn't know that Slash and Fergie had recorded a song together! :o

Kelly Clarkson - Dark Side
Great song but boring video with a cliché message. It just looked cheap.

I don't think anyone mentioned Backstreet Boys' "Just Want You To Know" from 2005. I thought that song was going to become a hit follow up to "Incomplete" but I feel like the video stopped it dead in its tracks

Jennifer Lopez "Baby I Love You"... If they spent more than $1000 on that terrible video, I don't know where the money went. Maybe on the catering service for the crew of 1 or 2? Horrible.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the video "killed" the song, but I always wished the video for "Something More" by Sugarland had a different treatment to it. I think Jennifer looked great and the video was well done, but the concept wasn't what the song was about and perhaps that rubbed me the wrong way in my 15 year old mind. Still one of my favorite songs though. :)
