Yeah, this album's musical palette is excellent, and it's perfectly sequenced too. I like all the songs on the album, but "u" is probably my favorite on there. It's such a vulnerable track. And now that I know that "i" was written as an answer to "u," it makes sense that it was so jubilant and positive. He needed something to pick him up out of the depression that he speaks about in "u." I listen to it from a new perspective now, not to mention the album version is slightly different from the single version.

Going to have to give this some time to sink in since, like Craig, rap isn't my home genre, but I love the instrumentation and funk and jazz influences throughout the album (hearing Bilal and Thundercat here again is nice after being introduced to them on Kimbra's album) - early standouts are "These Walls" and "Alright." Interesting move to drop this a week before "planned" release date, glitches, miscommunications, and all, but it'll be an easy #1 barring any other surprises.

Finished listening and this is really really really really good. Production, lyrics, and his flow are all on point.
My favorites thus far: "King Kunta" (might be my favorite), "These Walls", "Alright", "How Much A Dollar Cost", "The Blacker The Berry", "i"

Alright. Just gave this a listen and all I can say is that this is what rap should be - great music, great flow and great lyrics. IMO, the stand-outs are King Kunta, These Walls, u, Alright, The Blacker the Berry, i and Mortal Man.

I like the album. He continued his momentum. As a collection, it's not as strong as his debut. That album had f**king jam after jam. I do feel he's saying things with more conviction on this album. Glad to see he was able to keep the quality of his material strong.

I haven't gotten around to listening to the album myself yet, but regardless of how good the album may or may not be, I could have predicted this celebrity lovefest from a mile away. Kendrick is that artist that you're supposed to like right now.

I totally agree. Whether people GET it or REALLY like it or not, I expect nothing but lavish praise. It seems very political and knotty, from what I heard in clips, and recalls a time when agit-rap like Boogie Down Productions/KRS-One and Public Enemy dominated rap. Not at all we are getting a return to that, given the state of the young Black male these days, and not surprised people are reacting to it the way they are. But, I just wonder what a Taylor Swift would take from an album like this?

The glitches are fixed, the album is #1 at iTunes, and Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly (TDE/Interscope) is blowing up on multiple fronts. What's more, the set was streamed more than 9.6m times in its first day on Spotify (3/16), setting a new global record for most worldwide streams in a single day by a new release. - HITS

Objectively speaking, this album is outstanding. Great flow, great lyrics, compelling production (the rap/jazz infusion is intriguing), etc. However, it's just not my cup of tea. The only song I really like is "King Kunta." "i" has grown on me, but only as something I can passively listen to.
Also, this album is giving me HUGE OutKast vibes.

Even though rap isn't my favorite genre, I have to say that Kendrick slay! Seeing how Kendrick seemed to be set to break Drake's record for the biggest number of stream in one week (The record is around 40 million stream in one week, set by Drake with If You're Reading This It's Too Late in it's first full week), I will say that this will have the biggest opening of 2015 by male.

What an incredible body of work. If this doesn't at least get Rap album of the year... Gonna be a very tough year for that category. We're going to be seeing albums from Drake, Kanye, and (hopefully Nicki).

Gave this a spin for the first time last night...it's a lot to digest, so much so that I don't even think it's fair to 'review' this album until I've sat with it for a few weeks. The production is ace and I love the way the interludes are laid in and the repeated poem weaves everything together. Standouts for me - I suppose they're less 'standout' and more 'things that I was able to take in more quickly' - were Institutionalized, These Walls, Hood Politics (boo-boo!), and Mortal Man - what an amazing way to explain the title of the album. 'u' is a hip-hop Irvine...so overwhelming.
This is definitely a statement piece and I'll call it now - AOTY contender.

LOL. Is anyone actually surprised by critical praise for this though? Kendrick hits all of the critics' sweet spots at once.
