Can't believe I didn't think of this earlier:
Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
If I...
It defines iconic and it's instantly recognizable.

But for a song to have an iconic intro, it first needs to have an intro Whitney goes straight into the verse Kesha's intro would be the sound of the Casio organ not her Diddy references which is part of the verse. Anyway. To me iconic is when the intro has a texture, life of its own... Riffs are important for sure; increasing layers of instruments too; some drama too :) From journey, Separate Ways is another good example I would also include Asia's "only time will tell"

Oh my God Becky, look at her butt. It is so big. She looks like one of those rap guys' girlfriends. Who understands those rap guys? They only talk to her because she looks like a total prostitute. I mean, her butt, it's just so big. I can't believe it's just so round and out there...gross. She's just so...black!

Mariah Carey - "Always Be My Baby" Mariah Carey - "Fantasy", original and the remix. Mariah Carey - "Heartbreaker" Mariah Carey - "Honey" Lady Gaga - "Bad Romance" Lady Gaga - "G.U.Y." nota an iconic song, but that intro is iconic to me. Rihanna - "We Found Love"

Here's an absolutely huge one: "Be My Baby" by the Ronnettes (which just so happens to be one of the best pop songs of all time). KICK, KICK-KICK SNARE! KICK, KICK-KICK SNARE!

If it's truly iconic, people should be able to guess. Does anybody recognize this one?

"I Like This Song and That Means It's Iconic (To Nobody Else But Me)" is a favourite of mine. LMAO!!! Truth! Yeah, a lost of these are only iconic amongst the fan group of said artist. Those opening chords to "A Thousand Miles" by Vanessa Carlton Are those chords? Either way, I agree. It's a great and recognizable intro. Some instantly recognizable Mariah intros: "Vision of Love" - that sci-fi sort of opening "AIWFCIY" - people definitely know what song is coming and immediately get into it "We Belong Together" - that opening piano riff Someone mentioned "A Hard Day's Night," and that's a great one. There are a lot of classic Beatles intros; "Come Together" is another one. The intro on "Gimme Shelter" by The Rolling Stones is very iconic, particularly to fans of rock music. Those strings that open The Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" (and run throughout) are iconic (and a form of a sample of The Rolling Stones). I think most people immediately know - and have a positive reaction to it - when "Be My Baby" starts.

A few people mentioned iconic riffs, so:
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
Within a certain crowd, Fidelity-Regina Spektor would have a place in this thread for sure:
Shake it up bum bum bum bum bumbum bum da-dadum bum bum bum bum bum bum...
