'There Goes My Life' and 'The Good Stuff' remain the two biggest singles of his career, and 'I Go Back' gets my vote as the best single he's released to date, but I certainly don't expect this to even approach those first two songs as it relates to the biggest singles of his career, or the exceptional 'Don't Blink', which spent six weeks at #1 @ Country Aircheck/Mediabase in the fall of 2007.
My earlier prediction for over-and-under to #1 remains 12 weeks, so I'll stick with that.

I actually really like this one, although I can tell it'll be a very quick burner. The only complaints I can think of now are the quasi-rap delivery he gave in the verses and I could probably do without the crowd effect during the second part of the chorus. Overall, though, it ain't half bad.

This one's not too bad, will probably grow on me. Verses feel somewhat awkward to me but I quite like the chorus.

That's the downside of having singles streak up the charts to #1 in 9-12 weeks or thereabouts, and especially the onslaught of mediocre-or-worse 'bro-country stuff', although most of Chesney's singles will streak to the top in a similar manner if they're good enough, such as 'Come Over' did.
'Pirate Flag' and 'El Cerrito Place' were both very underwhelming singles IMHO, and consequently neither wound up torching the charts, which explains why 'Pirate Flag' ranked a very uncharacteristic 47th for all of 2013 @ Mediabase, his only single in last year's year-end top 50.
Ouch!

Kenny must have borrowed the Partridge Family's bus for this video and some of their fans!

So, I really enjoy this song, a lot. My reaction the first time I heard it was "oh, isn't this a fun little ditty." There is nothing new being said here, and Kenny's vocals aren't exactly mind-blowing, but it's totally enjoyable.

As Nostalgia songs go I really like this, which surprises me because I usually only enjoy Ballad Kenny, not uptempo Kenny (especially after the odd and boring Pirate Flag).
The vibe is upbeat and fun with a good hook and lyrically it comes off very fun and even self-deprecating compared to some preachy Nostalgia songs (I like Miranda's Automatic but that one is a recent one that comes to mind as a Nostalgia song how everything was so much better back in the day.....). In other words I enjoy reminiscing, but don't have to hear it was 'so much better' which annoys me.
Not sure if it sounds so fresh to me because it really is, or just because anything not Bro country lyrically or musically sounds fresh to me these days?

I actually like this quite a bit. I heard it for the first time on the radio today and of course it starts out with spoken word part and I thought "oooooo, don't like that at all" so I changed the station. But I came here tonight and listened to the whole thing and after that first part the song gets pretty dang good for me. Surprise surprise. :)

After watching the video the other day while working out, American Kids has grown on me immensely and I now think it's the perfect feel-good summer song for Kenny to come back with. I expect this to go all the way

This certainly won't duplicate that six-week rampage at #1 which the downright flawless 'Don't Blink' enjoyed, but I do expect it to spend more than one week in the penthouse.

So I know this song got the clear channel treatment ... What happened to the 8th day drop off everyone was talking about??? It happened. Here's the eighth day Mediabase update (from Saturday, 28 June): Kenny Chesney, "American Kids" -613 spins, -6.688 million audience impressions Because "American Kids" was a Friday release, it had four extra days in the following week to make up for the eighth day loss. It is noteworthy that more than just making up for lost hourly spins, "American Kids" managed to post a five million gain in audience and a 1,072 spin gain at Billboard in its second week, anyway. It has basically gained top-20 rotation across the board instantly -- especially impressive considering that Chesney's radio track record has been a bit more uneven over the past few years as a new generation of party-hardy males have ascended to A-list status at country radio. The single is holding up very well at iTunes, too (it holds at #13 on the overall chart in its seventeenth day out). I always hesitate to read too much into the first few weeks of release, but I think the early reception of "American Kids" is significant because this is somewhat of a comeback single for Kenny. Moreover, "American Kids" feels like a statement single, not just sonically, but in its message and intended audience. Both the press release for the single and the press release for Kenny's upcoming album feature quotes from Kenny talking about life beyond trucks & tailgates:So Kenny Chesney is clearly trying to position himself beyond the cliches that have dominated country radio over the past eighteen months. And while "American Kids" does substitute lists for storytelling, "We Were Us"-style (noteworthy because "We Were Us" is co-written by Nicolle Galyon, wife of one of "American Kids"' co-writers, Rodney Clawson) and isn't completely devoid of cliches, it does two things: it transcends generations in capturing the free-spiritedness of youth and it offers a conciliatory and reassuring message that applies as much to the debate about whether "bro country" has doomed country radio as it does to generational divide: "[We're] a little messed up but we're all alright." The acoustic guitar work is hooky and immediate thanks to the production, and the vocal melody is engaging -- all in all, this is a really ingratiating record, very easy to feel good about. I do wish Kenny's phrasing were more limber and that his vocal had more personality, but good on him for finding the tune and recognizing what it could do for him. Luke Laird continues to generate fresh contemporary grooves for country, and the collaboration between two of country's more cutting-edge hitmakers (Laird/McAnally) with one of its more lyrically down-home/dirt road hitmakers (Clawson) translates into a record likely to reach younger listeners without sacrificing Kenny's adulthood (as layne and someguy have already pointed out) or the adult country audience. Country music has historically derived a great deal of its impact and commercial strength through music with multi-generational appeal. Country radio has gotten away from that in the past eighteen months by over-focusing on a younger male demo (with some younger females tagging along), but "American Kids" is perhaps the first major mainstream country single of 2014 to deliberately broaden its target audience back out across the 18-54+ age group. A good move, and hopefully a sign of things to come.

Nothing these days seem to spend multiple weeks at #1 let alone 6 like "Don't Blink" did on MB in 2007. I actually would love to see this song spend more than two weeks at #1 if it can get there, which has a good possibility I believe with the steady climb helped by the Friday release. The revolving door at #1 the past few years has gotten ridiculous IMO and unfortunately it's looking like those days of 5 or 6 week #1's are long gone.

Yes, I agree. I'm going to enjoy hearing this one. I might not have to put up with it for very long anyway, given that it keeps adding a million impressions a day, and no song can do that for long. But I like the lyrics, I like the performance, and I don't need it to be great in order for it to get turned up a little on the car speakers.
I have mixed feelings about Chesney's career, but he has shown much more range in his choice of songs the last decade, and this one qualifies as a bit unexpected. I tend not to like his serious songs (I Go Back was very good, though) and I doubt Marv and I would pick the same songs if we both agreed to list Kenny's top 10 all-time. Better As A Memory would be #1 and You And Tequila #2 on my short list. This one won't go nearly that high, but I still welcome it.
I don't see why it can't get 3-4 weeks at #1, but that sure isn't guaranteed.

Though as you mentioned they still happen. I always forget "Stay" spent that long at #1 because of the two week break during the holidays which is why "Our Song" spent 6 weeks at #1 in 2007-2008. Those 5-6 week #1's still seem extremely difficult to come by now and days and even though I see "American Kids" getting Kenny back to the top for the first time since "Come Over", I don't think he will be able to get that many weeks on top. In 2005 we had multiple 5-6 week #1's with "As Good As I Once Was, "That's What I Love About Sunday" and "Better Life". In 2007 Kenny spent 14 weeks alone at #1 on MB with three singles ("Beer In Mexico", "Never Wanted Nothing More", "Don't Blink").

The trend for several years running has been fewer weeks at #1 for the format's biggest hits; when 'Just Got Started Lovin' You, the last song to wind up #1 for the year at both BB & MB, managed to do so despite a mere three-week run at #1, one would have to go all the way back to 1996 to find the last #1 single of the year to duplicate that feat, that tune being the standout 'My Maria', a superb remake of a 1973 top 40 hit by the late B W Stevenson, who co-wrote that longtime 'power gold' track.
1973 was also the year when Vicki Lawrence spent two weeks at #1 at top 40 radio with the Bobby Russell masterpiece 'The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia', which is still a masterpiece not to mention a classic IMHO 40+ years later.
I agree that this is a comeback single for Chesney; his huge catalog at country radio is the only reason why he was the format's fourth most played artist in 2013, trailing only Jason, Blake & Tim, all of whom enjoyed huge years at the format last year as compared to him, and since this is now slightly less than 1,100 spins behind Tim & Faith, let's see how long it takes for that lead to vanish.

^ Wasn't "My Front Porch Looking In" the top hit of 2003 despite having only ONE week at #1? I'm still baffled as to how that happened, especially since "Beer for My Horses" got 6 and "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" got eight.

After Just Got Started Lovin' You, James Otto only managed a few more top 40s and he was off the radar until he wrote No Hurry for the Zac Brown Band. Getting back to Kenny Chesney, it certainly looks like Columbia really wants a #1 this time. Only three weeks on the chart and American Kids is at #14 (chart run: 27-20-14). Really impressive for an artist into his third decade into his career.

Top hit at Billboard while the American Country Countdown named the Jackson/Buffett duet tops.
