I think the point people are trying to make is that this would have been an easy #1 at pretty much any other time, it just had the bad luck of being released at the same time as AATB which has been slightly ahead of SIO on radio for much of its run.
And I don't think this is "fizzling" like meIamJuanK is saying (which seems to suggest this is not living up to its potential) or falling short, I mean there isn't much room for upward movement spins wise. It's not like this barely hit #2 and sinking, its SPS was close to approaching an upper limit anyways at 97.3.
No one should suggest this is anything other than an out and out smash.

This never sounded like a multi week number one to me so I'm not surprised it's likely falling short. I predicted top 10, but I think top 5 would have been more accurate. I believe the last lead single with an explosive start like this actually "Roar" and that spent several weeks at number one on pop if I'm not mistaken. A top 2 would have actually been more accurate.

On this Sunday's chart, "Shake it Off" had 16,993 spins and 107.426M impressions.
Let's compare it to #1s from the past few Sundays:
9/28 - AATB - 17.5K/113.15M 9/21 - AATB - 16.5K/104.06M 9/14 - Boom Clap - 16.5K/107.6M 9/7 - Boom Clap - 16.5K/103.7M 8/31 - Boom Clap - 15.7K/99.7M 8/24 - SWM - 16.5K/105.0M 8/17 - SWM - 17.1K/111.4M
I think that comparison speaks *very* favorably of Shake it Off. It was clearly much bigger than Boom Clap and bigger than AATB and Stay With Me were during certain #1 weeks.
And note that Stay With Me did not have the kind of spin-eating competition SIO has with AATB and Black Widow.
There definitely could be some surprise/disappointment in the fact that it isn't a *bigger* song than All About That Bass, but I don't think this is anything other than a success when judged on its own.

Generally when people make predictions, they use set rankings as such number 1, top 5, top 10, top 20, etc. Im very aware a top 2 prediction would have been most accurate, but no one would make it because top 2 isn't normally used as a benchmark. Sorry.

Taylor's twitter. Someone on her team has some splaining to do. Lmao That's embarassing. At least it would just be returning to #1, not being a new #1. That would be a lot worse lol

Even though this didn't take the Hot 100 #1 back this week, with it's recent resurgence on ITunes that put it ahead of All About That Bass as well as getting close af to #1 on overall AI could certainly help this get #1 back next week!!!

It's curious but it's not that rare the a song that exploded the way Shake it off exploded struggle to reach the top. This reminds me of Born this way. It's like such overexposure at the beginning of the chart run end backfiring Taylor is over 97 SPS. Nothing happened besides just getting outplayed (literally) by two different even bigger hits at different times. And I'm writing this as though BW is definitely going to overtake it before it summits, but while that's pretty likely, BW is gonna start slowing down any day now too.

This song is a lot better than Black Widow tho, so I hope it does squeak in a week at #1. It's much more relevant, imo.

Hopefully they'll release #2 next week, along with the video and a prompt release to streaming sites. I'd love for her to get 2 Hot 100 #1s before the release of her third million debut seller :)

Number 2 is falling short of what several posters predicted. K? Also, last summer vs. this summer are two very different things with panel changes and the like. This didn't break any sort of spin record. Too bad. Anyway, I'm looking forward to single 2. I'm hoping for more "Trouble" and less this.

I'm interested to see just how many, of the hundreds of regular posters here, claimed this would be such to justify it "falling short". I call hyperbole and complete and total bs.

It may have fallen short of expectations, but at least it hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.No one expected "Black Widow" and "All About That Bass" to be huge on the charts at this point in the year. Most of the pop radio regulars don't have a current single out[A.K.A Rihanna] and there isn't much in the way of this song like WANEGBT had back in 2012.I wouldn't be surprised if this is still top 10 on Billboard come Thanksgiving time.

Geeez, other girls should be so lucky to not have the standard of #1 across the board or bust, to not have the "burden" of "disappointment" when 17.2k spins proves "not enough". I literally can't name one other artist who people have such sky high expectations/standards of success of. "Shake It Off" is outpacing her last lead single in every avenue (digitally, airplay, streaming). How is this disappointing? Because it didn't live up to overenthusiastic hype from a few people who were overly-ecstatic over its premiere? Smh. Some are just foaming at the mouth to discredit her success, when this single, by all accounts, has been nothing if not a huge success (across the board).

But Black Widow (wich is the song that really can make SIO fail to reach the top) is not a bigger hit than SIO in any department. AATB is huge, but it's not going to stay at the top for 11 weeks. It seems it will be number one for three weeks, and the song that is going to block (or at least seems to block) SIO is Black Widow

Watching today's update i think she will get that number one for (almost) sure It's 158 spins away from All About That Bass, number 1 tomorrow seems like a big possibility But the most important part is that BW slowed a lot in today's update, now the gap is bigger
