People get too wrapped up in #1s. Historically, some of the biggest songs and biggest cds have not hit #1 just due to perfect timing or weird circumstances. It isn't like we just remember #1 pop hits. 5 years from now this will be seen as one of her biggest hits and I doubt anyone will be like UHM NO IT TOTES PEAKED AT #2 ON POP UNDER-PERFORMER!!!!
I actually think this is bigger than I expected. I expected a bigger dip in sales and a faster slowdown in airplay than what has happened. I would have not been surprised to see this in the 4-10 range on Itunes at this point and maybe peaking around 3-4 on Pop. I still would have called it a massive hit if that happened. It has exceeded my personal expectations, at least. Of course, the fight isn't over yet-she may squeak out a week at #1 this week.

It has exceeded my personal expectations, at least. Of course, the fight isn't over yet-she may squeak out a week at #1 this week. That's true, everybody remembers losing my religion and it peaked at 4, and a lot of number ones are forgotten in a couple of months. There are even songs that not peaked at top 10 and are remembered (better than other hits bigger from the same artist). And the same with albums, The fame was not number one, and even one of the albums of this year, In the lonely hour peaked at 2 But it's understable that an artist and his/her fans want that number one, and in this case SIO is a way bigger hit than BW right now, i know that pop airplay it's not the same that the billboard hot 100, but at this point it will be a Someone like yout/Stereo hearts situation, where the bigger hit is blocked. Even if this ends in a Royals/Wake me up where the bigger hit was less weeks at number one, at least in that case it avoided being blocked, and i think that's what Taylor fans want

No matter how much I listen to this song, I can't get over how out of place and bothersome that cymbal can be. Especially in the second measure in the chorus. It's a minor flaw which really hinders my full enjoyment of the song.

Almost for sure getting the unofficial #1, with the official #1 looking very likely as well.

Has she any chance to recover the billboard hot 100 number one? It's selling more than AATB this week and i think it has an advantage on airplay too (or at least it will by the end of the week)

There's a chance, yes. Billboard withheld streaming numbers for songs 2-5 on the Hot 100 this week (we know for AATB but not SIO), so can't make any judgements on how close or far streaming was last week. Makes it hard to predict for this coming week.

All this is so unnecessary Oh of course, though a healthy amount of pettiness is always fun from time to time.

Now because of that promo. She's #3 at itunes, after being #4. Sigh.. Taylor deserves the #1 so much. Always timing

Always timing I'm pretty sure Big Machine only cares about sales at this point, it's the reason the song came out in the UK the same time it came out in US, which is virtually unheard of. If they had built the airplay (where she's now #1) and streaming (where she's also #1) and had given it a 2 month run and then released it on iTunes like most other songs, I think a #1 debut would have been a given. It does suck but it doesn't shock me. Their marketing strategy for this record has been awful so far.

Really? She's done so much... Taylor fans are so ungrateful. She could do soooo much and get a top 10 peak and you guys would complain, it's unbelievable lol

Really? She's done so much... Taylor fans are so ungrateful. She could do soooo much and get a top 10 peak and you guys would complain, it's unbelievable lol She's had one major appearance in the US in two months, we are two weeks away from the release of 1989 and we don't even know the track listing? This time for Red, we had three promo singles, each one of them promoted on Good Morning America, and a Papa John's deal which promoted the record on every pizza sold around the country. Their marketing "strategy" is to invite a few fans to her house, play them the record, and not let them talk about it online afterwards. It's just bizarre. The only confirmed promo spot for the week of release is GMA and Subway is giving you a cup with her face on it, only if you buy the mega large sized drink. Like...? It's not about being ungrateful, there's just definitely a lot more they could have done and should be doing for this release IMO.

I don't think they need to tbh, she's already outsold the last lead single (in comparison) she's debuted at #1 on the Hot 100 and reached #1 on Pop radio, and is in the top 5 on virtually every singles chart in the world right now.
Last time, she was just breaking out as a full-on crossover pop act, and this time everyone knows her already. I'm not concerned.

Well, if Billboard's predictions are accurate, she would be selling almost 500k less than what she sold with Red. SIO is a monster, but their strategies for SN and Red were on point, and they worked just fine. This is downgrading.
I'm not expecting her to cross the million mark with 1989 of course, but I think it would have been achievable had they had a different approach. Everything's just been very...anticlimactic? For the states anyway. Maybe it's the calm before the storm~, who knows.
