15 13 DARIUS RUCKER Homegrown Honey 4461 4504 -43 33.39 Not looking good... It also loses its bullet on the Indicator chart, where it does slide up 12-10, regardless. This could just be a bump in the road, or it could also be a sign of the song just not connecting with the audience.

"Homegrown Honey" has been stuck between #17-#15 on Billboard for 8 weeks prior to this week, and between #18-#15 on Mediabase for the same amount of time. It's audience levels have just stopped progressing the way it should have since it got off to its pretty good start. You might see the title track for Darius' new record be sent to radio before the album drops.

This is nothing new for Darius though - "True Believers" peaked early, and then "Wagon Wheel" was released and became a big hit. If this does falter soon, I can't say that I'm surprised. This song has always been fairly irritating to me.

"True Believers" had the dreadful hourly debut though, so that single was doomed to fail from the start if you ask me (though a #16 peak on MB and #17 peak on Billboard isn't exactly horrible, lol). Unfortunately for Darius, he will likely never duplicate the massive success of "Wagon Wheel" again.

Darius Rucker co-hosts Country Countdown USA with Lon Helton the week after Florida Georgia Line. I wonder if this is indicative of a final push. "Homegrown Honey" has definitely been struggling a lot lately and has spent way too many weeks in the teens for a run to #1 to still be in the question. Sales are also really low for a lead single (way lower than plenty of non-lead singles around "Honey" on the chart). I suspect Capitol may want to pull this after achieving a top 10 peak so they can get something that connects with listeners out before Darius' March 31 album release and potentially get more albums to sell. I don't see why Darius wouldn't be able to get a Clear Channel world premiere and have a lead single at least in the 20's on the chart by the time his album is in stores. A stronger seller outside the top 20 on the airplay charts would probably get more albums to sell than "Homegrown Honey" in heavy rotation.

A stronger seller outside the top 20 on the airplay charts would probably get more albums to sell than "Homegrown Honey" in heavy rotation. This seems doubtful to me--I can't see Clear Channel giving a new Darius single once-an-hour spins upon its release. Also, the follow-up to "Homegrown Honey" wouldn't be a lead single either, but I suppose it might sort of act like one if it was out a few weeks prior to the album's release. I doubt it gets a bunch of fanfare though. Darius usually does pretty well at country radio and I don't see why he can't continue to do so, but he's more of a mid-level star and I just don't see Clear Channel giving his next single any special treatment. And while I'm here, I don't think it's impossible for this song to go to #1 simply because it's spent so much time in the teens (we have seen some long 40+ week runs up to #1 after all), but I do think it's highly, highly unlikely. I think that both this one and Chase Bryant's tune will peak somewhere in the 7-10 range and then finally collapse in a few weeks, whereas I can see songs like "Mean To Me", "Lonely Eyes", "Drinking Class", and of course "It Ain't Worth The Whiskey" eventually making it into the top 3 if not to #1.

In my opinion, Darius' best bet is to get this song as high up the charts as he can right before the album comes out in late March. Then preview/release a few songs on iTunes in the weeks leading up to the release, and just hope that one of them is insanely catchy or catches some early buzz or word of mouth. I doubt Darius will ever have a hit the size of "Wagon Wheel" again, but if he sticks in his wheelhouse (more songs like "This", "Alright"), I think he could still get a couple of hits here and there, much like Joe Nichols and Billy Currington are doing right now.

Clear Channel has given Darius hourly spins before with "True Believers" and they've given non-lead singles "Give Me Back My Hometown" and "That's My Kind of Night" hourly airplay before album releases, which is why I saw those as possibilities. I do notice a lot of songs spending 40 weeks and beyond on the charts but I just couldn't see an artist as firmly on the B-list at radio as Darius Rucker hanging around for that long, especially with a lead single. I guess I sort of thought he's one of those artists whose music has to either grow or die in a reasonable amount of time. But then again I thought the same about Jake Owen and "What We Ain't Got" has lasted a 30-week climb into the teens, so I guess a lot of crazy things can happen on the country charts. I definitely agree with your last sentence about where we'll see the 10-15 cluster of songs peaking on the airplay charts. :)

This one has been tangled with Lonely Eyes and Drinking Class for a couple weeks now and I'm honestly surprised to see that it jumped both of them for the time being.
All three had similar spin gains this past week so it's hard to tell whether they are all rising naturally or whether Homegrown Honey has gotten a push, since it is probably the weakest of the three to the general listening audience.
All of them may have an issue coming up with Cole Swindell and Zac Brown Band still coming in hot.

The boldfaced parts of your post are why I believe this is getting a final push. "Lonely Eyes" and "Drinking Class" are obviously much bigger hits that will go up ahead and peak higher in the long run, but if radio stations are being asked to give maximum spins to "Homegrown Honey" for just two final weeks, it may be possible for Capitol/Darius to stay ahead just for a short period of time to obtain a single-digit peak position for this single.

Surprisingly, this makes it to the top 10 on Billboard. That's not surprising at all. Chris and Darius have been extremely close the past couple weeks and "Lonely Eyes" edged out "Homegrown Honey" by just 42 points on MB this week. Darius actually increased 76k more in audience on MB today, while Chris gained 21 more spins. Plus Darius was in front on Billboard last week. It was extremely close for both songs on both charts.

Glad this has finally made it into the Top 10. How much higher will this one be able to go though? I'd love to see it be a #1 hit for him and start the era off right, but a Top 10 is still solid of course.

I'm really happy to see that the push we were discussing above was not a final all-in for this song. Still going strong into the top 10. How far can this one go? It's going to have Ain't Worth the Whiskey, Homegrown and that Top 40 song coming up behind it soon.

Not sure why Darius co-hosted Country Countdown USA...This is still being pushed and climbing steadily through the top 10. I really think it would have been in the best interest of Darius Rucker and country radio to pull this single and release something more interesting before the album's release. I get the impression that this just really isn't connecting with listeners at all and if songs like this, "Freestyle," and "Crushin' It" are the future of bro-country I am just as ready as anyone else at Pulse to move on to a new trend.

It took me a while to warm up to this song, but now it's just pure ear candy. It is for sure going on my guilty pleasure list of songs that I can't help but like. Happy to see this doing well for Darius and hope it continues its climb (that and so I can keep turning it up when it comes on the radio ).

Darius can do so much better than this bro-light and that "you're so money, money, money" makes me want to projectile vomit. Spectrum Pulse on YouTube would agree with you, as he made this comment on one of his Billboard Breakdown videos: Oh wow, I didn't expect this. I've never been a fan of Darius Rucker or his former band Hootie & The Blowfish - they were the sort of adult-alternative act that bored the piss out of me and generally catered to those who wanted the least threatening music possible. So Darius Rucker transitioning to make country didn't surprise me, but 'Wagon Wheel' was a damn good song - mostly because it was cowritten by Bob Dylan, but still! This, though - wow, talk about selling out. From the incredibly clean production to the by-the-numbers forgettable songwriting that features repeating words to fill up space for no good reason to Darius Rucker trying to add swagger to his voice and failing miserably, this is desperation personified in a song. Darius Rucker is desperately trying to leap on the bro-country bandwagon, but this is the end of 2014, and outside of a few exceptions, bro-country has effectively collapsed. This... this is just embarrassing for everyone involved. Next!

This song is definitely not a grower - it's the complete opposite. I dislike this the more I hear it. It's one of the most grating songs in recent memory for me with that "honey, honey, honey, you're so money, money, money" line. Along with the "Did your mama teach you how to do that thing you do".
I cannot wait for this song to go recurrent. The live versions of "Southern Style" are promising and I'm confident it will be much better than the lead single.

I haven't listened to this much, but it doesn't bother me, and I'd say that I generally like it. However, like others on here, I wish Darius would stick to songs like This, It Won't Be Like This For Long, etc.

This is honestly my least favorite song on radio right now, even ahead of atrocities like "Little Red Wagon" and "Freestyle". It's such a grating, unoriginal, horrid song. He's had more success with better songs, and I hope this isn't an indicator of the album.
