Not bad. Not a fan of the high notes he sings during the chorus but still pretty decent.
Certainly one of his stronger lyrical efforts of late.

This isn't doing much for me. I actually like most of the lyrics, but some of the repetition irritates me. The production is alright. The song won't become a favorite of mine, but I'm probably not going to change the station either.

won't be buying any more music from this turnip. a sellout. Wow. A turnip? Would that be a waxed or a purple top turnip? I wouldn't call Blake Shelton a sellout. He has been very bland over the past few years to do that. He is releasing safe music in order to continue his chart topping streak. After all, if Neon Light does hit #1, it will be his 18th overall and his 13th consecutive chart topper. Yes, I do miss the Shelton of old (2001-2009) when his music was way more imaginative than now.

Well Blake released another bland, forgettable song and I can't say I'm surprised. I haven't liked single of his since Sure Be cool if You Did. It's quite a shame that he didn't realease "Do You Remember" because that was a great song

Not great. Very typical for Blake. I'm sure it'll be a multi-week #1 hit.

I agree about the quality of his recent product in that nothing has really blown my doors off; granted 2001's 'Austin' was the third biggest debut single of that decade and remains his crowning achievement IMHO, but while this is a far cry from either 'Austin' or 'The Baby', it certainly trounced the first two singles from his current CD.
I also have no idea what the point is regarding the tiny 5-week window between this song and his new CD, although he told the LA Times a few years ago that he wanted to get more new music into the hands of his fans quick which explained that flurry of EPs; 12 weeks has been the industry standard for well over 15 years.

I'm not saying anything negative. It's an a-lister releasing an actual country song that falls well within the boundaries of the genre. It's not hip-hip, it's not pop, it's not bro-country. For those reasons alone, I'm thankful.

When looking at the tracklisting I noticed something else, Blake owns his master recordings now, like Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Little Big Town, Kenny Chesney, etc. So this is the first record of a new recording contract with Warner.

I'm a fan of ALL three writers of this song, so I'm not going to say anything negative about the song itself; but the production and Blake's overall performance of the song doesn't do it any justice. Very "blah" to me and I'd change the station in a heart beat if I heard this one coming on. Sorry, simply doesn't do it for me. BUT, it's Blake Shelton, so naturally it's going to be an automatic Top 10 hit which is at least good for Mark, Josh and Andrew.

Not bad. Not a fan of the high notes he sings during the chorus but still pretty decent. Certainly one of his stronger lyrical efforts of late. Those 'high notes' he sings during the chorus are actually a recall back to the old school way of singing from time to time (think George Jones). I think it's a nice touch. This song melds parts of the past Country music lyrical content and cleverness with some modern production techniques. All in all, a pretty solid debut single from Blake.

This isn't my favourite song, but then it's not bad either. Compared to what this could've been like, I'm happy with it. It's the kind of song that I can see growing on me the more I hear it.

^ I pretty much feel like some of the past few posts. It's not hip-hop or pop infused, nor bro-country and that was something I was relieved about. Is it the greatest thing in the world? - No, but the production is fine and I enjoy Blake's vocals here. The one thing I'm not a huge fan of is the repetitiveness with some of the lyrics like "Tunnel, Tunnel". Overall I guess I'm somewhat pleased and think this is better than any of the singles from Based On A True Story.
That being said, I just don't see this as a lead single. Sounds more like a song that would be single #3 or #4 from an album. Unfortunately it fits within the safe bubble that Blake as had with most of his singles since 2010 ("Boys Round Here" being the exception, but even though that was different, it wasn't good different). He's gotten so huge that it would be awesome to see him try a single similar to some of his early releases like "The Baby", "When Somebody Knows You That Well", or even "Playboys Of The Southwestern World" where it would still be a big hit single since everything he touches turn to chart gold right now. It's not anything special but at least it's heading back in the right direction for me at least.

It would sure be cool if he did grow his hair long again and sang songs like "Austin" and "The Baby" again. Like this?:

Is this getting hourly airplay at Clear Channel stations today? I'm assuming so, because CC's KNIX here in Phoenix played a little iHeartRadio ad, with Blake introducing "Neon Light" as his new single. I've already heard it several times on both CC's KNIX as well as CBS' KMLE. I have to say, I actually quite enjoy this one. It's not exactly a home run but not every single song can be a masterpiece, and this one works just fine for me. I like the lyrics and I like Blake's delivery, but perhaps more importantly, I like the production. The banjo riffs sound great and this one actually sounds country. It's still contemporary, but clearly rooted to country sounds. The only complaint I have is a slight one, and it's already been brought up: I don't think repeating the word "tunnel" 3 times (and he does this with a couple other words too) is necessary. And I do think that his vocals could've been a little bit better on the high notes of the chorus ("light", "bright", "alright"...he sounds just a bit too thin), but like rsmatto said, I immediately thought of some older country songs and the vocal delivery of people like George Jones (and no, I'm not comparing Blake, his voice, or this song to George Jones, just saying that that's what Blake's vocal phrasing reminded me a bit of). So all in all, I like this. I definitely like it more than any of the singles from his last album (and for the record, I thought "Boys 'Round Here" was pretty funny, and I liked "My Eyes" too, but the rest I could have done without). This is probably my favorite Blake single since either "God Gave Me You" or 2009's "I'll Just Hold On". I'd probably grade it a B+ or an A-. I definitely think it will fit in well on today's country radio.

He could've have released a stronger lead single, imo but I still like this song. Granted I was underwhelmed on the first listen, but I am enjoying it now. I echo everyone's sentiments about the repetition though.

Thank you Clear Channel!!! You're awesome, NOT!!!!
Tracking at #1 after only one day of airplay, but won't stay since Blake won't get ridiculous airplay like he did yesterday.
Country No.1 Blake Shelton Neon Light +82591 Blake Shelton Neon Light
42 -- BLAKE SHELTON Neon Light 984 -- 984 -- 8.286 -- 1
Blake even had a higher debut in spins and audience I guess due to the song being released at midnight whereas Taylor's was released to Pop in the afternoon after her live stream.

Good as far as radio goes, but people, for whatever reason, seem to be struggling to find this one on iTunes. I don't care what you think of Blake or the song, but someone with his star wattage shouldn't be outside of the Top 25 after nearly 24 hours of availability.

Yeah it's weird, "Girls in Bikinis" is selling better than this song right now. I'm a little surprised Blake isn't selling better right now.

iTunes didn't have the song to buy so many of us bought it on Amazon! The album was up for pre-sale but Neon Light wasn't even on there. It showed up in my music Monday afternoon.

This is pretty solid. Color me surprised. Only thing is I'm not particularly keen on his vocals during the high notes on the chorus. I understand what he was going for with the throwback style of singing there, but they could've cleaned it up a bit or something because he just doesn't sound good during those parts imo. For instance, Lee Ann Womack 'wails' it in a lot of her songs, including her latest single, but her's sounds much more pleasurable than him when he's doing it here. But lyrically and musically, this is nice and definitely a country song, though still not as adventurous a release as he should be going for, but I'm optimistic that this new album will be a bit of a return to quality music based on the sound of the tracklisting, the cover artwork, his duet partners, etc.

I will give credit where its due and say this is the best single hes released in ages. Its actually pretty country and I LOVE the high notes , but Blake's always been near the top of my list as far as contemporary country vocalists. I do agree the repetitiveness of some of the lyrics could wear thin pretty quickly though. Another minor qualm of mine would be the electronic drum sound at the beginning , its almost like they are trying disguise the fact that this song is actually country. All that said , I agree with countrysuperfan on the sell out remark. That word can be thrown around alot with toady's "artists" , but I cant think of anyone it would fit better then Blake looking at how the quality of his music has nose dived in recent years. Granted , I still hold a grudge over his "Old Farts" comments though , so at this point he could cut a Merle Haggard tribute album & I wouldn't buy it....

George Jones would be proud. This is the kind of song I've been waiting for Blake to release. Love the high notes in this one.
