In no way is "Riptide" better than "Stolen Dance". Seriously.

"Riptide" is so so good. I agree with its placement above "Stolen Dance", but overall it is way too low imo. "Stolen Dance" is also low, but I'm indifferent to it being this low.

2 very forgettable hits in my opinion, so I don't mind seeing them that low. "Stolen Dance" is decent still.

Riptide is burning out on me so I don't even care enough to defend it's position. "Fly Away" is awesome though. Love me some Lenny K

I love "Riptide" and "Stolen Dance" both. Riptide is just a fun upbeat song to me, and I love the lyrics for being odd and quirky instead of generic love crap you hear in indie folk songs. Stolen Dance on the other hand has a nice beat to it and despite the singer's criticized delivery, it's soulful and earnest.

291 KINKY AFRO Happy Mondays #1 for 1 week, 12 weeks on chart [1991]
This song was one of the most annoying songs to reach the Alternative top 10 in 1991, and that's pretty hard competition when we had crap like The Shamen and more bad Jesus Jones. The vocals are pretty irritating, and don't get me started on that godawful "yippie-yippie-ya-ya" crap...

290 BE YOURSELF Audioslave #1 for 4 weeks, 26 weeks on chart [2005]
Cliched, pandering and boring, the lead single off of Audioslave's second album Out of Exile is one of the worst things that Chris Cornell has laid his hands on, right above his critically panned solo album Scream. The track plods on for four and a half minutes, recycling cheesy lyrical content over some pretty uninspiring vocals. The song seems like it's going to build and build and let go, but it never does, it just stays on that same level of monotony for the whole track. Not to mention, it's also pretty unimpressive. While it doesn't come close to any of the four top ten hits off their debut, it didn't have to be this inane.

Happy Mondays do a wonderful cover of "He's Gonna Step On You Again", but this one is just ok.
"Be Yourself" is miles ahead of Staind's "Believe" on the boredom factor.

289 THE WALKER Fitz and the Tantrums #1 for 1 week, 34 weeks on chart [2014]
With their debut album Pickin Up' the Pieces, Fitz and the Tantrums established themselves as a great up and rising indie neo-soul act, with great songs like "MoneyGrabber" and "Dear Mr. President" (which managed to get played across televisions everywhere for the Mazda commercial four years later). Although the follow-up, More Than Just a Dream, was a bit of a sophomore slump, there were still songs like "Out of My League" and "MerryGoRound" that showed the best of their more indie-pop style. But it failed to live up to its predecessor, and it was songs like "The Walker" that weighted it down. While "Out of My League" should have been a huge Pop smash, it wasn't, and this did slightly better, peaking at least around #46, but it wasn't as good. That chorus of "Oh! Here we go! The feeling in my soul!" is so damn irritating, while the sax solo comes out of nowhere and, although it was a nice change of pace and brought back one of their calling cards. Plus, the female vocalist yelling "Everybody walk!" also doesn't work well.

288 I WILL WAIT Mumford & Sons #1 for 1 week, 37 weeks on chart [2012]
Mumford & Sons were one of the acts that spearheaded the indie movement on the Alternative charts, changing the face of the format with the explosion of "Little Lion Man" back in 2010. Yet, surprisingly, they weren't indie pop; they were indie folk, which, although has had its fair share of #1s recently, still does not dominate like indie pop does. The thing was, though, "Little Lion Man" was a great song - "The Cave" and "Roll Away Your Stone" weren't as good, but they were still tolerable. But when it came time to follow up their acclaimed debut album, Sigh No More, all they could do was lazily recreate "Little Lion Man", and it just did not work. "I Will Wait" was incredibly boring, not bringing anything new to the table - but then again, that's the trajectory that Mumford is following - they had to release the snoozer ballad "Lover of the Light" as the second single, much like "The Cave", except the difference was "The Cave" was actually good. "I Will Wait" is a song that's just there - I don't strongly hate it, but it's not good at all. It's repetitive, it's unoriginal and it's boring. Just like the rest of the Babel album...

287 SO FAR AWAY Staind #1 for 7 weeks, 30 weeks on chart [2003]
There's no doubting that "It's Been Awhile" was an absolute huge hit for Staind - not only did it spend 16 weeks at #1 on the Alternative charts and 20 weeks on the Mainstream Rock charts, but it was a huge Pop crossover hit, and when all was said and done, it peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, an astounding feat for a moody, profanity-laced ballad that focused mainly on self-deprecation, self-loathing, depression and estranged parents. Even though nu-metal and post-grunge had a huge presence on the Pop charts during the turn of the decade, this was a song that truly came out of left field, conquering the airwaves with its greatness. The problem is, the Pop world isn't exactly going to take well to Staind's heavier material, which is why the lead single to their 14 Shades of Grey album (50 Shades joke incoming), "Price to Play", did nothing. And that's why, for the rest of their career, Aaron Lewis and company kept trying to recreate "It's Been Awhile", and it never worked. While "So Far Away" isn't quite the worst example of this ("Believe" will tell you that), it's just so uninteresting. There's no emotion, no passion, nothing that made "It's Been Awhile" the song that it was. Yet releasing "Right Here" and "Believe" as lead singles next will pretty much clinch the fact that they never learned from this. Although I guess #24 on the Hot 100 is an accomplishment enough...

The Walker below I Will Wait is probably my biggest disappointment so far. The former I love, and though not as good as other Fitz and the Tantrums hits is still a solid track. The latter I absolutely loathe and can't understand why it became so popular.

I love both "The Walker" and "I Will Wait". I agree that "Out Of My League" should have been a huge pop smash. It's still so good.

What are you smoking, putting "The Walker" this low? And "I Will Wait"? Are you kidding me? At least I'm not too strongly opinionated over the Staind song.

To hell with Kinky Afro, but ouch man lol. I Will Wait and The Walker are good, but Be Yourself and So Far Away were both #1s on my personal chart haha. My favourite song from each band.

I love "Be Yourself", it's not exactly the kind of song you'd expect from Chris Cornell but it feels like a distant cousin of "Black Hole Sun".
"So Far Away" is the only Staind song I like. "I Will Wait" is ok, but somewhat repetitive. The rest I don't really care about.

286 WEIRDO The Charlatans #1 for 1 week, 16 weeks on chart [1992]
While most of the songs to hit #1 on the Alternative chart during the late 80s and early 90s were forgettable to say the least, very few of them have gone down in history as songs that reached extreme levels of popularity. While everyone knows "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Losing My Religion", I'd bet you that if you asked your average music listener who Ned's Atomic Dustbin or World Party are, they wouldn't be able to tell you a damn thing. Turnover was sharply high during the early period of the chart, and thus we had songs like "Weirdo" that barely made any impact - 22 years later, and most avid followers of the chart don't even know that it reached #1. That's justified, though, because this song is incredibly useless. The introduction is incredibly long, lasting over one-fourth of the song, repeating the same damn synth and bassline into oblivion. Then the vocals come in, and they're so quiet all they do is blend into the sinister background that fails to deliver on the mood. A weird song, indeed. Fun fact - The Charlatans had to be known as The Charlatans UK in the United States because they were sued by an old 60s band who claimed to use the name first.

285 HOW YOU REMIND ME Nickelback #1 for 13 weeks, 38 weeks on chart [2001]
Hating Nickelback is a sort of paradox. Those who aren't a big fan of the band are accused of doing it to be 'cool' and follow the crowd, yet those who defend them often feel like phony fans who feign their like of them just to avoid being labeled as conformists. There's no denying they've made their fair share of stinkers - "Far Away", "Photograph", the entire Here and Now album - but at the same time, they have a few songs, like "Because of You", "Side of a Bullet" and "Never Again" that aren't all too bad. "How You Remind Me" falls right in the middle of the whole complex; it's not horrible, but at the same time, it's still not of quality. This is all mainly attributed to the vocals of Kroeger the Ogre, the vocals that are internationally loathed and mocked, and for good reason. While he manages to make it tolerable on some songs, this isn't one of them. Are we having fun yet? Fuck no.
