probably the only Nickelback track I could say I like, though I can't say I've queue it up on a playlist all that frequently. All of the mid-2000s crap songs like Photograph, Savin' Me, Rockstar, Far Away are what drove me away from any chance I would have of enjoying their material. I don't mind seeing this song this low though, it's not fantastic.

284 METROPOLIS The Church #1 for 1 week, 15 weeks on chart [1990]
More forgettable songs. I'd never even heard of this song before I started documenting some of the early chart days, and it's easy to see why. There's just nothing memorable about this song, nothing stands out at all. And of course, it'll always be overshadowed by Dream Theater's nine-minute long progressive metal masterpiece of the same name - "Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper". While the guitar bit in the chorus is kind of neat, that's just about it. "Metropolis" just fades into the background when songs like "Been Caught Stealing" and "Nothing Compares 2 U" were reaching the same amount of fame in the same days. It's not like it's a hidden gem, either - more like hidden salt.

283 SEEIN' RED Unwritten Law #1 for 4 weeks, 26 weeks on chart [2002]
So, here we're talking about forgotten #1 songs, but here's one that just reached #1 a little more than a decade ago. This little pop-punk ditty actually did top the charts back in 2002, but does anyone remember this song? Unwritten Law never made much of an impact, having only one other top ten hit other than this - the #5 "Save Me", and they really were nothing special. The main gripe I have with this track is the lead singer's vocal performance - he sounds like he's underwater, and maybe that's the production's fault, but it limits my enjoyment of this song. "Seein' Red" was definitely a more mellow ballad for Unwritten Law, who were normally more pop-punk influenced (they sounded like Fall Out Boy three years before they struck it big), and it wasn't one of their better songs. Besides, Chevelle wins the battle of "red" songs...

282 YOUTH OF THE NATION P.O.D. #1 for 2 weeks, 26 weeks on chart [2002]
P.O.D. were one of those nu-metal bands that had a couple of hits at the turn of the century but as soon as the trend passed, they were left fighting for their careers on Alternative while remaining superpowers on Active. The thing was, they never were that great, even if "Alive" still remains somewhat of a guilty pleasure. "Youth of the Nation" was their only Alternative #1 hit, and it told the stories of several troubled children, each with their own personal issues, from suicide to broken homes. The thing was, the rapping on this always felt a bit forced and clumsy, and the lyrics, written post-Columbine, are pretty cheesy and cliched. Not to mention it pretty much takes from Papa Roach's "Last Resort" anyways...

281. I agree, this one never really goes anywhere. 280. In terms of Alternative I'm okay with this being this low. For Rock, however, we'd have a problem. 279. Always liked this after discovering that it hit #1. But most new wave music from this era sounded like this; you either get it or you don't. 278. Looking back, it's one of the few big hits from 2002 I didn't know at the time. Probably because it was so forgettable. 277. If you were your age when this came out, you'd understand. This is what the "cool" "edgy" kids listened to.

Two of my favorites from 2002. Still waiting on The Reason. I didn't even hate Nickelback until Dark Horse came out. Then everything changed. There was even a time when I actually liked Rockstar (I think we're in agreement that Shakin' Hands and Never Gonna Be Alone are their worst songs). But I actually genuinely like "Leader of Men", the song Chad Kroeger wrote while on multiple drugs. Go figure.

281 WALKIN' ON THE SUN Smash Mouth #1 for 5 weeks, 32 weeks on chart [1997]
Smash Mouth were just one of the bands that came up in the late-90s, like Matchbox Twenty and Sugar Ray, that it almost seems absurd that they had #1s on the Alternative chart, especially since they all became huge on Pop and Hot AC. Yet there was Smash Mouth before "All Star" became firmly integrated into pop culture as the opening theme for Shrek, and in fact their first album, Fush Yu Mang didn't sound much like their later work at all, and that includes "Walkin' on the Sun", which is a lot more ska punk-influenced. It's also one of the most annoying songs on Fush Yu Mang, mainly because of the more ska-leaning instrumentation. The vocals are a bit more irritating, although the rest of the album is pretty good. Just don't ask about how Sugar Ray used to be a nu-metal band...

"Weirdo" is average, not terrible but nothing great about it either. "Metropolis" is cool though.
"How You Remind Me" is amazing, I disagree with it's low position as well as everything you said about it, especially the part about fans being fans just so they don't feel like haters for no reason, that's quite the stretch. You pretty much called us all pretentious there.
"Seein' Red" and "Youth Of The Nation" are both good songs, but are the kind of hits that don't really have any appeal 10 years later, I mean I don't listen to either one of them anymore anyway.
"Everything To Everyone" is awesome.

"Everything to Everyone" is probably one of my favorite "f**k you" songs. If anything I'd call Rock Star their worst (a supposedly parodic song with not a shred of irony) so no surprise that was what killed their careers.

280 WHAT IT'S LIKE Everlast #1 for 9 weeks, 34 weeks on chart [1998]
Who says rappers don't have their soft sides? Everlast, the leader of rap ensemble one-hit wonders House of Pain, known for their quintessential 90s anthem "Jump Around", embarked on a solo career once House of Pain disbanded, and while most of it was more of the same abrasive rap, his only hit "What It's Like" showed a more soulful and bluesy Everlast, Unfortunately, that's really not what we needed from him. Even if Whitey Ford Sings the Blues was a pretty unimpressive debut album, it's not like this was helping its case. It's so turgid and boring, built solely around a simple acoustic lick that repeats throughout the song. Everlast's rapping is also uninspiring; there's really not much emotion as he tells the tales of troubled people, including a hobo and a teenage mother who resorts to abortion. I do give it credit, though, for managing to work the line "cutting off his balls" into an otherwise earnest story of the hood.

279 MMM MMM MMM MMM Crash Test Dummies #1 for 1 week, 17 weeks on chart [1994]
This was a rare moment, a Canadian band reaching #1 on the U.S. Alternative charts. Less than 3% of the songs to reach the top of the charts have been from Canadian, and luckily for the Crash Test Dummies, they made history as the first one to do so. Even if this often gets inclusion in many Worst Songs of the 90s lists by Bitchfork and the like, many only hate it because of the chorus, which, after all, is nothing but humming, hence the title. No, that's not why this song is irritating. My main problem with "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" is the vocals - more annoying that Chad Kroeger's, to be honest. His accent on the words "girl" (sorry, I meant "gawl") and "school" are just grating. With that said, I do like the melancholy mood and the lyrics, dealing with the suffering of children, children who are badly injured in car accidents, children who are born with disgusting birthmarks and children with physical disabilities. Mmm, mmm.

smh @ you putting one of the most iconic 90s songs at #275.
I'll always legitimately enjoy the Crash Test Dummies. I like the lead singer, he has a unique voice.
Oh, and Everclear's good too.

275: Fantastic song! Can't fathom it being so low but since this is Baron we're talking about, I'd be surprised if any acoustic guitar song is in his Top 100. 274: Yeah, this song is annoying.

Ugh. If there was ever a song as bland and overly long as this one, I haven't heard it. As a current freshmen, this song is insulting to me personally, potraying my class as a group of no-good condom forgetters who resort to abortion. I hate this song and everything it stands for. It's a complete piece of s**t that deserves to be forgotten. FOR THE LIFE OF ME, I cannot understand why ANYONE would like this song. It's such a bore, makes me snore, and it's about a whore. Next...

Are you f**king kidding me. Ugh I shouldn't be surprised. At least my favorite Alt #1 will probably rank highly on your list. Also, I always interpreted the song as more about college freshmen rather than high school freshmen. (High school freshmen, yeah I can see them as a group of no-good condom forgetters too.) Also you really make it sound like you hate the song a lot more than #273, I can't help but think that description was mainly for me.
