278 GET THE MESSAGE Electronic #1 for 2 weeks, 16 weeks on chart [1991]
I don't expect anyone to know this song, honestly. Like so many other #1 Alternative hits around this period, this was just nothing special. It begins with a pretty nice acoustic lick, and then the drums kick in, but the vocals really do drag this song down. They sound like they're being whispered, with no energy or emotion in it whatsoever. With that said, I do have to admit that the instrumentation on this song isn't really all that bad, but it drags on for five and a half minutes without really going anywhere. The lyrics are kinda neat, though. Yet for a band named Electronic, I would have thought they would have used, well, more electronics, and not just generic early 90s college rock.

Well that's a sigh of relief. I never understood why this hit #1 and "Getting Away With It" didn't.

Also you really make it sound like you hate the song a lot more than #273, I can't help but think that description was mainly for me. Hey, I wasn't COMPLETELY convinced. 273: I can't believe I paused the new Royal Blood album to listen to this song. It bored me to tears.

I can't stand the softer version that pop radio used to play. Was the album version really considered "too hard" for CHR in 1997? Some pop stations were playing Prodigy for god's sake! And the guitar is out of tune on the "won't be held responsible" part. Just give me the harder version anyday. (Oh and that Electronic song is eh.)

277 HIGHER Creed #1 for 3 weeks, 27 weeks on chart [1999]
We're starting to exit the tier of the list where the songs are pretty horrible to the tier where most of them are just plain old boring. And that's what "Higher" is - Creed's sole #1 hit on the Alternative chart, and it's also one of their most boring songs ever. Compared to Nickelback, Creed actually aren't all that bad; sure, Scott Stapp's vocals may not be the best or the most original, but "Bullets" and "My Sacrifice" are at least somewhat decent. "Higher" was also a huge Pop crossover hit, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and staying on the chart for a monstrous 57 weeks. With that said, it's still pretty uninspiring. Written by Stapp about the power of lucid dreaming, "Higher" fails to take me to a higher place, instead, it puts me to sleep, and there I dream of better things, much better things than this song.

About time "Higher" charts. Boring and uninspired. I'm glad I haven't seen songs I really like yet apart from maybe "Sweater Weather".

You mention "Bullets" and "My Sacrifice" as your favourites but they're my least favourite, lol. I liked this up until a few years ago but now I'm at the point where I don't really need to hear it again.

I honestly didn't hate the stuff off of Creed's first album that much. Then again that was before they were pop crossover territory, and usually when hard rock bands go that route that's when their opinion consensus goes down.

276 FAT LIP Sum 41 #1 for 1 week, 28 weeks on chart [2001]
Obnoxious pop-punk at its finest (or unfinest). One of eight Canadian acts to score a #1 US Alternative hit, Sum 41 were one of the first pop-punk acts to top the charts, although that's probably because it has a lot more in common with nu-metal than most other bands of their ilk. The annoying rapped verses, the whiny chorus, it all adds up to pretty unenjoyable fare that warns us "not to waste [our] time" or become "casualties of society" and "victims of conformity". It's all so damn cliched, and insincere. Perhaps the worst part is that on Billboard, this blocked Tool's "Schism" from reaching #1. That's right, these no-good Canadians blocked my favorite band of all time from ever getting a #1 Alt hit. Oh well, at least I can give Mediabase that. With that said, "We're All to Blame" is perhaps one of their better songs, even if it does recycle parts of System of a Down's "Chop Suey!"

275 HIT THAT The Offspring #1 for 1 week, 24 weeks on chart [2003]
I will never for the life of me ever understand why The Offspring always resort to releasing their crappy joke novelty songs as the lead singles for almost all of their albums. Americana gave us the annoying but slightly charming "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy", Conspiracy of One had the irksome "Original Prankster", but the first taste the world got off their 2003 album Splinter was this two-minute long song that ranks amongst some of the band's worst songs they ever released (okay, fine, maybe not as bad as "Cruising California (Bumpin' in My Trunk)" or "When You're in Prison". The main thing about "Hit That" that irks me is that annoying synth keyboard line that just repeats itself over and over again for the whole duration of the song. Lyrically, it forewarns about the consequences of teenage pregnancy, although it is pretty funny to hear Dexter preach about how "sex is a weapon". He's also not at his A-game vocally, and instrumentally it's also lacking. Bust out on it, dudes.

"Hit That" is one of the few high points on that album. It wasn't until 2008 that they gave us a proper comeback.

Hit That is kind of ruined by the synth riff that never goes away throughout the song. The rest of the song isn't that bad (fits in with most of the Offspring discography outside of the huge smash hits imo), but I just can't get over how abysmal that synth is. I know it's supposed to play into the novelty of the track but it sounds really cheesy.

"Fat Lip" is one of Sum 41's weakest singles imo. It's a shame it's their only song to top the alt chart since they do have some good stuff ("The Hell Song", "We're All To Blame", "Pieces"), but I'm glad to hear they blocked Tool from #1 lol, I cannot stand Tool.
Same could be said for "Hit That", it's not that bad but it's one of the Offspring's weakest singles imo...

but I'm glad to hear they blocked Tool from #1 lol, I cannot stand Tool. I'm not one to usually resort to petty insults or anything cause everyone's titled to their own opinion, but you can go fuck yourself. "Higher" - Decent, I like Creed. "Fat Lip" - Decent, Sum 41 are alright. "Hit That" - Eh, The Offspring tend to be hit-or-miss.

lol, this should be even lower, I can't stand this song. I mean come on, you dislike Fat Lip AND I Hate Everything About You? Dear Canadian bands, allow Pipa to hear your breakthrough singles at your own risk! At least tell me you like "One Thing" and "Nothing Could Come Between Us" lol. Seriously though, "Fat Lip" is amazing, A+ song for me. I also really like "Hit That", and I like "Higher" although even to this day my rock station overplays it to death.
