270 PAIN Three Days Grace #1 for 4 weeks, 30 weeks on chart [2007]
Can we talk about bad lyrics? Like, real quickly. "Pain, without love. Pain, I can't get enough. Pain, I like it rough, 'cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all." Did Adam Gontier keep a diary when he was fifteen and have an emo phase where all he did was wear black, cut himself and enjoy the misery? Because goddamn, "Pain" has some of the most laughably horrible lyrics in a Three Days Grace song ever. It completely ruins the chorus, which wasn't even all that good to begin with. It's so damn generic and stale, even for a band that played stale music for practically their whole careers. It's hilariously awful and without any saving graces (pun intended). With that said, the verses are actually pretty decent, even if the lyrics are still cliched in emo drag, but they don't last for all that long compared to the most notable part of this song. It's not even the best song called "Pain" to reach #1...

It's better than "Just Like You", but not their best IMO.

266: Eh, I can sing along to this song but it's not particularly good. 265: I like this song! Three Days Grace are great, even if Pain was one of their more weaker singles.

269 STARING AT THE SUN U2 #1 for 3 weeks, 16 weeks on chart [1997]
1997 really was not a good year for U2. Their ninth studio album Pop had just been released, and critical reaction to it was very divided, with some praising the experimentation and others thrashing it. After all, that was to be expected, though; it was such a risk to dabble in techno, dance and electronic - and the backlash was severe. Much like lead single "Discotheque", "Staring at the Sun" fell off almost as fast as it shot up. Although it was more standard U2 fare, it still disappointed, because it was one of their worst ballads yet. Aside from the stupid lyrics ("There's an insect in your ear, if you scratch it won't disappear"), Bono just sounds off on this one. He's not his best vocally, and it's more of a snoozer than their other ballads. At least the guitar riff is kind of decent. Too bad The Offspring did it better one year later.

268 ONE WEEK Barenaked Ladies #1 for 5 weeks, 26 weeks on chart [1998]
This song is just way too goofy and silly for my taste. Not to mention that it's only one of eight songs to simultaneously top both the Billboard Hot 100 and Alternative charts, the others being a clusterfuck of randomness that shows no correlation at all. There also seems to be a trend where band's signature songs are far from their best work and actually don't represent their career well, and this is one of them. It's full of nonsense lyrics and annoying vocals. Like, I know I'm not supposed to take it seriously, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not that great of a song to me.

Normally nostalgia would help with the appeal of a song like "One Week", but not me. I can't stand it and they've had much better.
And the U2 song is a snorefest.

Lol Green Baron, do you like ANY TDG songs? IMO they're 100% deserving of all their success and are easily one of my favourite bands ever.

They're more active than they are alternative, and besides, Adam Gontier's vocals were a big part of what made them 'alternative' anyway. I still love them though and they still look like they'll succeed on active, so that's all I really care about.

It did hit HAC if I recall correctly.

267 HERE'S WHERE THE STORY ENDS The Sundays #1 for 1 week, 16 weeks on chart [1990]
The story ends here, motherf**ker, because this song is unenjoyable. Speaking about forgotten #1s, this is definitely another one, seeing as it gets virtually no airplay today, twenty-four years later. It's way too breezy and happy, and the vocalist is also pretty annoying, enunciating the words "little things" with an odd tone. Between it's overly happy atmosphere and irritating singer, it's clear to see why this ranks low.

266 THE OTHER SIDE OF SUMMER Elvis Costello #1 for 4 weeks, 10 weeks on chart [1991]
Elvis Costello made his best work in the 1970s. Songs like "Radio Radio" and albums like This Year's Model were very good, but flash-forward to the 90s and it was clear that he was running out of steam. It's just not very interesting, and a bit too breezy for my taste. It's also fairly repetitive too.

265 BRING ME TO LIFE Evanescence feat. Paul McCoy #1 for 2 weeks, 26 weeks on chart [2003]
I was never a big fan of Evanescence; yeah, they had a few good songs here and there, but overall their brand of gothic-tinged alternative rock never did much for me. Yet, their debut single, "Bring Me to Life" raced to the top of the Alternative chart in a matter of ten weeks - the fastest ever for a band's first charting song - and soon became a crossover smash, peaking at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on Billboard's Pop Songs chart. The thing is, though, it's not very good. Rumor has it that the song was originally going to be more of a slower-paced ballad, but the label decided to intensify it a bit by bringing in Paul McCoy from 12 Stones to do the rapping bit in the chorus, which makes this song a lot more nu-metally. Maybe that's why I'm not that partial to it. At least there's a bit of screaming. Overall, it's just one of those songs I don't detest, but also don't find anything special in it. It was unique for Pop radio at the time, though, so there's that.

264 WHAT'S GOOD Lou Reed #1 for 3 weeks, 10 weeks on chart [1992]
You know what's good? Not this song. Once again, the Alternative chart shot lots of mediocre songs by former legends straight to #1, which is justified, given their legacy that they left on music. But don't expect them to rank all that high. "What's Good" is a mile away from "Walk on the Wild Side" or "Perfect Day", and the album that spawned it was no Transformer. The lyrics are hit-or-miss (that line about mayonnaise soda and bacon ice cream is negated by the awesomeness of the rest of the song), but the instruments and weak vocals aren't enough to carry it through.

All 3 of those songs are pretty good IMO. I do find Evanescence to be extremely overrated though. "Bring Me To Life" is like their lone real bright spot, and "Going Under" is ok, but everything else is completely forgettable.

Are you continuing this? Or completely abandoning it? If you were planning on continuing it, I thought it might be helpful for you to know that I found 321 Billboard Alternative #1 hits, which is 5 more than the 316 you seem to have. A few months back I decided to make a Spotify playlist of every Billboard Alt #1, so here's my list in chronological order. I guess mine could be wrong somewhere, but I have checked it multiple times and found no errors. If you were wanting to finish the project it might be better if you knew if you were missing any more now rather than much later down the line. Here's my list: pastebin.com/5wMv0SEg
