Why did the ad in BCU this week call this Dierks' third consecutive multi-week #1? "I Hold On" only spent one week at the top of country airplay and didn't top any other chart at all.

I thought that was strange. This is what I said in my column (posted today): 1. DIERKS SAYS: For the second week, Dierks Bentley is tops with Say You Do. So far, Bentley has ruled for five weeks with his three chart toppers from Riser: one week for I Hold On (2014), two weeks for Drunk On A Plane (2014), and so far, two weeks for Say You Do. If Bentley manages a third week at #1 for Say You Do, it will match his longest reigning chart topper, Come A Little Closer from 2005.

I don't know where they got the multi-week from unless they decided to just combine the MB/Billboard #1 weeks.

Nevertheless, congrats are definitely in order to Dierks reaching #1 at both trades, including two weeks atop the BB chart with one of 2015's very best singles.

If they decide to release another single I'm hoping for either "Riser" or "Sounds Of Summer".

I thought that we would have had an announcement last week about a new single. Hopefully we will get one on Monday.

I thought that we would have had an announcement last week about a new single. Hopefully we will get one on Monday. I think there's still time for them to announce a new single, but I'm starting to wonder if maybe we won't get another Riser single, simply because of the over-crowded release schedule of late. Trisha Yearwood can't chart, Toby Keith went for adds a month ago and can't stay on the chart, RaeLynn went for adds at the end of March and hasn't been able to stay in the top 60, a promising newcomer like Logan Mize can't even get on the chart, and now we have new singles from Thomas Rhett, Brett Eldredge, Cole Swindell, Zac Brown Band, Sam Hunt, Old Dominion, Chris Janson, Thompson Square, George Strait, Kid Rock, Lee Brice, Randy Houser, and Chris Young, plus new releases from Luke Bryan, Hunter Hayes, Craig Campbell, and probably Jake Owen too are right around the corner. Darius Rucker's 2nd single is off to a really slow start. Artists like Reba, Kip Moore, Maddie & Tae, Dustin Lynch, Rascal Flatts, Chase Rice, Dan + Shay, Mickey Guyton, Big & Rich, Parmalee, Lady Antebellum, Eli Young Band, Kacey Musgraves, Jana Kramer, Gary Allan, Drake White, Chase Bryant, Casey James, Montgomery Gentry, Ashley Monroe, Waterloo Revival, Cam, and LoCash all have singles out right now, but are all struggling/moving slowly. A 5th single from Riser (4th if you don't count "Bourbon In Kentucky") might really struggle, which might therefore hurt Dierks' momentum. I'm still selfishly hoping the title track can see a release, and I know Dierks is hoping that as well, but maybe Capitol sat him down and explained to him that they didn't think it would do well, given the current climate. Or maybe they'll release it yet, who knows. Like I said, I still think there's time for them to announce/release one more single. I really want to hear "Riser" on the radio, but I'd settle for "Sounds Of Summer" or "Five", too. I think it's probably too late to release "Sounds Of Summer", though, unless of course it fizzles out lower on the charts. If it were to go #1, though, it'd probably need 25-30 weeks at minimum, which means a November peak at the earliest.

Dierks was announced as part of Good Morning America's summer concert series today, playing June 26th. The timing lines up to promote the Farmborough festival in NYC but I am also wondering if perhaps the hope is to debut a new single then as well? And perhaps have a new album for Q4? I know he has 9 songs already recorded, but hasn't given any indication whether any of those are single worthy or not, or if they're definitely on the album. I'll be at the tour opener on June 5th so I'll know if he sings anything new - but of course, by then, we'll know if the Riser era is complete, as well.

If they do release another track off Riser the way the chart is right now, it'd be best to wait til June to let things hopefully improve. I actually think I might lean towards ending the era now on good terms. There's little chance the title track see's a release and I have little faith it could reach the top 10 if it was. Everyone knows that Dierks wanted that one released to radio but even he knows that might not be a great decision. Riser is so good that it would be cool to see another track released but the business side of me (bigger side of me) would rather they end Riser now and come back with a single later this summer. Which would mean that we get unheard Dierks music, which is also a good thing. :)

I frankly don't see why a solid B-lister like Dierks Bentley has to worry about congestion at the bottom of the charts. Looking at this week's Billboard chart, I see maybe three songs/artists below the top 30 that have more momentum or name recognition than Dierks. Sam Hunt has one of the biggest hits of the summer with "House Party," Old Dominion have a hot hit on their hands with "Break Up with Him" but even this is a new act's first single on a major label, and Brett Eldredge has a lead single that is climbing pretty steadily, but Brett's still not a huge name like Dierks. I think a fifth single like "Five" or "Sounds of Summer" would have a climb about as steady as Cole Swindell is having right now with "Let Me See Ya Girl" and could peak in the top 10 late this fall.
The songs at the bottom of the chart are getting a high amount of airplay for their positions, but it's not like I'd be expecting Logan Mize, Chris Stapleton, Waterloo Revival, Uncle Kracker, Ashley Monroe, LoCash, Montgomery Gentry, Casey James, Gary Allan, etc. to be doing much better. I might have guessed a few of the artists could have gotten higher on name recognition, like recent OTV artists Chase Bryant and RaeLynn, or Darius Rucker, but Chase is still a brand new artist and Broken Bow's been experiencing diminishing returns with all their acts lately, RaeLynn really doesn't have a terribly large amount of momentum after "God Made Girls" missed the top 10, and Darius Rucker had been losing his radio presence and even failed to reach the top 50 with "Miss You" two singles ago. I'd be very surprised to see a radio-friendly Dierks Bentley song struggle the way the gang at the bottom of the charts is. "Riser" should remain an album track but I don't see why there can't be a different song released to close out the era. Since this is easily my favorite Dierks Bentley album, I'd be disappointed to see it cut so short.

You said it yourself though @daydrinker - he's a solid B-lister, and has seen singles toil in the lower regions of the charts before taking off (Say You Do being only the most recent example). His songs aren't typically clamored-for by radio (DOAP is the only exception to this), and usually have a bit slower ascent up the charts. 18 weeks is his fastest (achieved 3 times, I believe - Sideways, 5150, DOAP) but most of singles need 22-28 weeks to peak. That's not horrible, but it's still pretty lengthy, and would easily push a new album into 2016. I admit that's what I was expecting as it's been his cadence since "Home" came out, but Capitol may be looking to capitalize on his remaining momentum from the "Riser" era and move on more quickly than we have seen in the past. (I also think that if "Riser" had won AOTY at the ACMs, we would already have a new single announced.)

The problem is the timing right now. Like jhomes87 said, it's probably too late to release "Sounds of Summer" now, because it wouldn't peak until fall, making it a little out of place, and could cause it to not peak as high as it probably should have (Kind of similar to Scotty McCreery's "Feeling It"). And with summer months coming up now, "Riser" would probably struggle early on as it doesn't fit the typical mold of what is played on country radio during the warmer months. Plus, throw in the packed charts right now and it doesn't seem like "Riser" would be a good decision, despite the quality of the song. So that really only leaves two options: "Five" and "Pretty Girls". Both could do okay, but I don't see either being huge digital sellers, so as much as it pains me to say it, it might not be a terrible idea to come back with a strong lead single near the end of summer. In a perfect world though we'd get to see "Here On Earth" and "Damn These Dreams" get released as singles, but that world does not exist in 2015.
