Questionable? Sure. Lewd? No. And to be clear , I wouldn't want to see a return to the G rated material about sippy cups & drinking sour milk either. I just don't want to be beat in the head with subject matter that includes "pink umbrellas" & "riding it all night long".....or a naked Jason Aldean (shudder). I don't see how the "riding it all night long" lyrics can be taken in a sexual way. Here's the line in context: If you wanna catch a buzz and ride it til the mornin' Let's get two plastic cups and baby I'll get to pourin' It don't really matter if it's whiskey or wine, it's fine Isn't it pretty clear that the "it" is referring to the "buzz"? I guess its open to interpretation , but "riding" a buzz? I'm pretty sure the writers knew exactly what they were doing here when the entire song seems to be based on drinking & screwing. With lines like "let your red lips leave their mark all over mine" & "put your hands wherever they wanna go".etc. etc.

So many people take lyrics the writers intended as non-sexual (this song, other songs through the years) as sexual for whatever reason. I mean the "Pink Umbella in your drink" is conveniently a double entendre but still something that's not inherently obvious to the average listener.

And some folks will go to any lengths to defend the latest flavor of the month. Even if it means ignoring the obvious bread crumbs that the "writers" left behind.

Chase tweeted this morning: "Check @sxmthehighway in 15 minutes for some news on why I haven't been touring and more ACM talk. First live interview in 2 months."
So I signed up for a free SXM account to hear what he had to say. I'll edit in the news and what not once he's on. Curious to see what the "news" is.
ETA:
- He tore up his vocal cords with doing 200 + shows a year and partying a bit too much over the last few years. He had vocal surgery December 30th. He had polyps and realized how bad it was for him during the Dierks tour last summer. He tried his best with what he could do. He became friends with Keith last year because of his vocal problems. Keith has been a big supporter of him with this all and he has offered a lot of advice for him. He said he just started singing again last week at home and can only do 2 songs right now because it's a bit rough for him still. He said while he started making changes last summer he's going to continue to work and focus on making his voice and cords the best that they can be. He also added that he realized last year that he needed to grow up and cut down on the partying. He has made a lot of changes in his life - physically, emotionally and mentally - because all of this.
- ACM Vote videos. When he filmed them, he wasn't allowed to talk. So he had to go back in and overdub the talking in once he could talk. Tried to keep it as simple as possible since it was still difficult for him to talk at that point.
- Started working on his next album. Two songs written already. He has plans to write different topics than Ignite the Night and what's currently on the radio. He refuses to buy new country albums because he doesn't want to know what anyone else is doing. He'll listen if it's on the radio but that's it.

Promising interview. Good to see he might be maturing.

I like the idea of not listening to other country albums: hopefully that'll lead to some more organic and fresh songs and topics. Certainly wouldn't mind more songs like "Jack Daniels & Jesus", which is absolutely fantastic.

I wondered if the rasp in his voice was natural or caused by something else. I assume he is back to touring since he is slated to open for a Kenny Chesney show I am seeing in a couple months.
I like the sound of his voice and I think he is a promising songwriter, but Ready Set Roll was just atrocious. This is moderately better in the music department (not so much with the lyrics) but I think that interview (and the slowness of both of his two singles) probably confirms that there won't be another single from this album.

He said he is still going out Kenny starting next month. Like I mention he said he just started singing again last week at home. Just him and his guitar. He could only do two songs so far since he's still building his voice back up. I wouldn't take it as this is the last single from the album. Yes, it's moving slow. He only has 2 songs written so far. So it might take awhile longer until he's truly in the studio and working on it. Oh, I'll say I heard a difference in his speaking voice. It sounded clearer and wasn't really raspy as it was. He said he had polyps and he had to learn how to sing/talk with them so he could do his shows and everything. It wasn't the greatest move and he takes blame for his vocal problems. He opted to wait until he had a few months off to do things, he even cancelled his appearance on the cruise he was doing with Train this month so he could heal properly.

Not sure how not buying and listening to music from other artists is going to make his music 'better,' especially if he's just going to listen to stuff that comes on the radio (even with the state of radio improving more lately... there's still work to be done). That comment actually struck me as kinda douchey, but that was likely influenced some by my preconceived notion of his (crappy) personality.

I believe it means he's not going to listen to his peers as much, so other songs and styles are less likely to influence the music he puts out. I think it's really smart, and I wish other artists would do the same. It remains to be seen if this results in better quality music, but the principle behind it seems pretty logical. He didn't say he was only going to listen to songs on the radio, so I'm assuming he means he will avoid most country music all together.

He mentioned he listens to SXM, so if a song is on there he'll hear it otherwise he won't. So there's a little more variety than there is on regular channels. I didn't see it as anything "douchey" or whatever else you'd want to call it. He wants to make music that doesn't sound the same as everyone else and seems to want to break out of the mold that is there for a lot male artists. So he's not purposely going out there and buying the new albums coming out from country artists. He was asked about the video/audio of the six or seven country songs mashed together. He said he got a kick out of it. He just seemed to want to break out of the Bro-country mold now. That is how it came across to me in the part of the interview that wasn't about his vocal issues.

Let's just hope he doesn't take the route of many of his Sony counterparts and release material that loses listeners' interests and causes sales and radio ratings to go down like they have been lately. I actually think if Chase Rice had taken a more "hardcore bro-country" approach with his next single and released "Do It Like This" instead of "Gonna Wanna Tonight" he might be moving up the charts just a bit faster. I'm still confident this will go somewhere with a 40+-week chart run but with the how great Chase's music is selling and how radio-friendly it is I definitely view radio's treatment of him as strangely disproportionate.

Still really like this song, think it'll fit in nice for a spring jam to early summer! Anyone know where this is at right now?

Since he won't get anymore hits most likely after this, he might as well release U Turn next it's the only other standout track other than look at my truck. I like the album but it isn't that radio friendly honestly.

I wonder if the success of "Ride" right now digitally will have a negative impact on the chart run of this song? Fans seem much more interested in purchasing that song than they do his current single. But "Ride" is currently at #9 on iTunes, and "Gonna Wanna Tonight" is at #89, despite being a $.69 discount song. It seems like the success of "Ride" could cast a shadow over Chace's current single, especially since he's still a newer artist.

Wonder how long this will stick. Also, album is holding well so far Who knows. But it's certainly not selling as well as "Ride" is. Then again, "Ride" is getting SXM airplay and this one's not really getting much (if any) there.

The Highway spun "Gonna Wanna Tonight" a lot last fall but have curbed it's spins back since "Ride" has been added. I'm not really overly knowledgeable on that though since I usually turn the dial when either comes on. As for this song at radio, I think top 30 is the max as it's audience gains have really not been that great lately and it's now 25 weeks old.

Didn't "Ready Set Roll" follow pretty much the same path as this song has though? I know RSR had much better sales though, and that's been one issue for "Gonna Wanna Tonight". It surprisingly hasn't been a big seller, which seems odd because Chase is definitely a pretty well known newcomer right now. The other week at Tortuga Festival, he had a huge audience there to see him, and definitely was one of the more popular daytime performers. This one also strikes me as better fit for radio too, because it seems less offensive as "Ready Set Roll" was. This one just has an easy vibe to it, and it's also quite catchy. I'm hoping this can hang in there for a 40+ week climb, and somehow make the top 20. I doubt they will release another single off this album since Chase is already working on new music, so he might as well push this one for as long as radio will allow.

"Ready Set Roll" got it's promotion picked up by Columbia when it entered the top 40. It was really a special circumstance as that's when the heavy major label promotion got underway. They sent a "clean" version of the song to radio and did some nifty work like discounting it to .69 cents to keep it's sales to spin ratio up while it was climbing. It basically was a new chart run when it entered the top 40 and got picked up by Columbia. (don't forget it was originally self-promoted by Jack Daniels Records before having the now shuttered RPM taking over promotion).

This is easily his most country single yet to me. For sure a lot less offensive than RSR was. (Note that I was one of the few that loved RSR, but I can for sure admit to it's offensiveness. )

Not sure what the limitations are like for Chase. I like this song better than Ready Set Roll, but how far he can go is up for debate. When I saw him live, he wasn't very good. Or I should say, nothing about it seemed unique. His vocal range is pretty limited. The only time any of his songs sounded remotely country was when he yelled something about trucks or drinking. Not sure if that says less about Chase as a songwriter or country as a genre.
Overall, it felt like I was at a grunge concert sponsored by Hollister with a guy who looks like a rapper. The creepiest part was when he brought a girl on stage and sat her on a stool and looked in her eyes and said "I'm gon' ride, I'm gon' ride, I'm gon' ride, I'm gon' ride, I'm gon' ride, I'm gon' ride" and then told her he would kiss her all up and down in front of everybody or something like that.
All that aside, this song got a decent response.

Ugh this song is terrible. That's some terrible production. Seriously I think he needs to be dropped from Sony. What does he really have to bring to country music? Well I would say nothing because this is not country in any way shape or form. Chase why don't you go try rapping or try pop radio that way you won't bother us anymore.
