^ I know, I wasn't being overly serious with the "she hasn't had a hit because she's done 400 projects" comment. We all know that the worst thing you can have in Nashville right now is ovaries.

I've got to give Blake Shelton a lot of credit for inviting Monroe to be his duet partner. When you've been criticized for having very ordinary singing chops (I know, he has 5 straight Male Vocalist awards, but he's not exactly seen as Keith Whitley or Vince Gill), to go out and record with a really fine singer takes self-confidence and a love of music. He's risking something by drawing attention to the high quality of her vocals.
Not everybody is willing to do that.

I also love that he features artists like Ashley Monroe and Gwen Sebastian on his songs because they're unconventional duet partners and it's nice to have that variety and also for him to 'expose' lesser-known artists to a wider audience. It's a shame some people are so incredibly small-minded though at the same time. I couldn't believe how many stupid comments I saw on social media asking why Blake didn't pick Miranda to sing on this instead, implying that it's inappropriate for him to sing a love song with anyone other than his own wife. I didn't see anyone complaining about Miranda singing "We Were Us" with Keith Urban, so I'm not sure why this instance got people riled up. Not to mention the two of them have plenty of songs together over the years, even though none of them have gone to radio (would love it if they broke that trend, but they don't seem to have a care to do that thus far), so it's not like they NEVER sing together or something.

Miranda will only be released if she sings with someone in the Sony group. Home she was never listed on but I knew it was her since his mom told me way back then. The video did show her from behind!

I just realized that some parts of the melody sound like Albuquerque by Sons of the Desert.

^That will be interesting, considering he's not the greatest actor.

Those who can Do; those who can't criticize those who can. Oh sorry, I thought we were allowed to share our opinions here. And yeah I can't host SNL because I wouldn't be good, because it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a regular person not a celebrity the caliber of Blake. I'd love to host SNL but I never will, not because I can't because I'm nobody famous. I like Blake but based on his ACM hosting I don't see him doing that well with the acting part. I will still watch and hope I am wrong. Although, what I do know is he will be up for anything and that's what'll be funny.

Not sure what his single choices have anything to do with his singing ability, especially considering he's actually releasing strong singles again.

I think he can sing really well live, it's the quality of his previous releases that worried me, but he's back in my good graces once again! Can't wait to see him on SNL!

Wonder if he'll have Ashley with him to sing this song or if he'll just do one of his solo songs like "Neon Light"?

^ I wouldn't be surprised if he did get Ashley. I once saw him in concert, and he had Miranda walk out JUST to sing the harmony on "Home".

Wow, I am loving this song more and more every time I hear it! I know that many times he goes for silliness and cheap laughs, and he certainly has several good songs within his light-hearted material, but THIS is a perfect song for showcasing the extent of Blake's talent. I hope he continues to go down this road with his future singles, because this is the type of song I think a superstar should be releasing. Also, Ashley Monroe sounds absolutely perfect on this song. I am not very familiar with her, but I will definitely check out some more of her stuff now!

This reached the Top 10 on Mediabase so.... #FreePass Probably will reach #1 too and continue Blake's #1 streak. You can take that to the bank. Lonely Tonight will be Blake Shelton's lucky 13th consecutive #1 and 19th overall.

Just took my first stab at it, and I liked it. Ashley Monroe has always been one of my favorites female country artists and Blake has a great song every once in awhile. Should continue to move up in the charts.

Lonely Tonight will be Blake Shelton's lucky 13th consecutive #1 and 19th overall. It's actually gonna be his 14th consecutive: 1. "Hillbilly Bone" f/Trace Adkins 2. "All About Tonight" 3. "Who Are You When I'm Not Looking" 4. "Honey Bee" 5. "God Gave Me You" 6. "Drink On It" 7. "Over" 8. "Sure Be Cool If You Did" 9. "Boys 'Round Here" f/Pistol Annies & Friends 10. "Mine Would Be You" 11. "Doin' What She Likes" 12. "My Eyes" f/Gwen Sebastian 13. "Neon Light" 14. "Lonely Tonight" f/Ashley Monroe

Just to address this #FreePass notion of yours, Daryl the Beryl, the country format has been an artist-driven format more than a song-driven format for years. So big-name artists with built-in name recognition and fanbases do indeed get fast-tracked into the top twenty on the logic that radio listeners are already invested and interested in their songs. In theory, this should free up the big-name artists to take more risks, but in practice, we've seen a lot of (male) superstars, Blake, Jason and Luke included, coast with unchallenging, formulaic material. I'm not justifying radio's fast-tracking, but I can see the rationale for it. In any event, I want to echo some of the posts above apprecating that Blake is using his #FreePass to feature Ashley here. Is this song/single anywhere near the caliber of her solo material? Not as far as I'm concerned, but I'm content with the fact that Ashley's distinctive voice is such a key to the single's commercial appeal. This isn't a "My Eyes" situation where the featured artist is just doing some background harmonies, though Blake did make sure to bring Gwen Sebastian to the front of the stage for performances. Were this five years ago, I think "Lonely Tonight" would be a "Don't You Wanna Stay"-sized hit in terms of download sales and radio. It may still achieve that level at radio. Looking at Ashley's schedule, I'm not seeing any other gigs for this coming Saturday, so here's hoping she gets to make her Saturday Night Live debut, as well.

^ I wish the same thing would be for the Alternative chart where established artists such as Linkin Park, Three Days Grace and Seether are struggling.
Anyway, I don't mind this reaching #1. It's better than "Neon Light" and "My Eyes".

It's better than "Neon Light" and "My Eyes". The difference with those artists on the Alternative charts is they've been around a long time by that format's standards. The top Country stars seem to have longer times for success. The "automatic hit" formula idea is fairly unique to country nowadays (not that any of the acts you mentioned can't get hits up the chart...Also isn't Seether on a tiny label now?).

Yesterday, Blake appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and revealed he's performing "Neon Light" and "Boys 'Round Here" on Saturday Night Live. I guess that makes some sense, considering that covers his most recent chart-topper and his biggest single in recent history. That said, "Lonely Tonight" would have been much better and I would have loved the mainstream exposure the song could have gotten.

Also Lonely Tonight is already in the top 10 so we should have a new single by the ACM hoping for Gonna to be the next single

I agree with your characterization of the likely thought process behind the two choices, and perhaps there's also an element of trying to represent "range" here -- from a song with a traditional country vocal to one with hip hop production elements and rhythmic talk-singing. I've got to say, though, choosing a song with such a smugly provincial attitude and deplorable attitude toward women...a song that embodies nearly all the clichés for which mainstream country has been mocked and criticized for the past eighteen months -- it feels a bit...tone-deaf, maybe? I would have gone with the more genial "Hillbilly Bone" over "Boys 'Round Here" in that setting, personally. But maybe Blake wanted to do two solo performances.
