"Because You Loved Me" doesn't sound much different from the Diane Warren ballads sung by artists like Toni Braxton, Aaliyah, and Monica around the same time, and those had R&B success. Some of the [holds nose] R. Kelly-written ballads around that time also sound similar. So I can see where the argument is coming from, even though those R&B artists' songs were basically forays into pop/AC territory anyway. As for guitars, the only thing that comes to mind is the brief solo during the last chorus of "My Heart Will Go On". Why am I talking this much about Celine Dion anyway?

Why am I talking this much about Celine Dion anyway? Because you’re only now realizing your priorities and have catching up to do. Tell us more

Every time this thread is bumped now I come back and re-read it, and I could not imagine not being able to see this historic event in my post history...I need my name to be in a blue link here, always

Wow, some are just fighting for scraps. Meanwhile, I'm on a whole different level. I saw an Asian woman listening to Sting's ... Nothing Like The Sun album. Pulse Racial Council (@jazzysoul47 SHOOTER @antigonerising Linnethia Monique allow that ), what does that mean?

Dielawn Come on now, for one Celine has very few songs that are truly R&B. And of course an R&B artist making more of a pop song is still going to get some R&B play, much like country artists making pop music still get some country play. Additionally non-R&B artists making an R&B song isn’t going to be an automatic R&B hit, much like just because Jewel made a country album didn’t need mean country radio sent her to the top. There is some loyalty within genres, and also some resistance to one-offs.

But the overall reason Celine Dion didn't appeal to R&B audiences from the start is also what I'm inquiring (Maybe it's comparable to how Fifth Harmony didn't appeal to Urban audiences?)

Why would she have appealed to R&B audiences when she was releasing AC/pop music? “Where Does My Heart Beat Now” is not an R&B track. “If There Was Any Other Way” is not an R&B track. “The Power Of Love” is not an R&B track.

Not bad for Celine!

In general it’s not how formats work. I’m not saying it’s right (or wrong), but it’s how it is.

I remember hearing about Mariah having a sh*t-fit after she saw Tower Records plastered with Céline promo displays... Imagine how she would have reacted had Céline been pushed on R&B radio.

It just seems like some of her music could've crossed over to R&B. "Because You Loved Me" and "If You Asked Me To" are examples I think it comes down to corporate decision-making over resources. I don't think there was not enough time to promote Céline in the R&B market, on top of promoting her material in two languages globally. BTW, the arrangement of Céline's version of "If You Asked Me To" was nearly note-for-note identical to Patti LaBelle's, which was a Top 10 R&B hit a couple of years earlier... so I don't think it had much of a chance to cross over.

Celine Dion 1. Haiti Yup. I was very surprised that Jamaica wasn't in the top 10 cuz I've heard they love Celine too.
