Dan Seals: Greatest HitsStill research related listen. Cannot really fathom that this was/is considered to be country. Really gave this a chance... Don't like it, quite honestly. OT: sabre14 " Bop" is so flop! I'm so sorry! :) Trent Willmon: Trent WillmonInspired by sabre14; see some posts above. Haven't listen to it for quite some while. Although it's from 2004 it hasn't aged a bit; and it's like listening to a greatest hits set. The single "Beer Man" is the worst track by a long shot. " Home Sweet Holiday Inn" is the stand out here. Willie Nelson: Band Of BrothersWas in the mood for some soothing and genuine sound with real instruments and no studio gimmick. Willie delivers all perfectly. For Dan seals I recommend "big wheels in the moonlight, "God must be a cowboy" and "everything that glitters is not gold". I agree the rest is pretty poppy lol Thanks for your tips! Will give "Wheels" and "Glitters" another chance! "Cowboy" is not on this set; but I'll find it. :) Thanks!

Dan Seals was actually a pretty decent artist (and today would have been his birthday) , you just wouldnt know it from that greatest hits package, I dont believe 2 or 3 of those songs were even hits . I thought "They Rage On" , "Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold)" & "Addicted" were all top shelf material from that package. Along with "You Still Move Me" , "God Must Be A Cowboy At Heart" , "After You" & "Old Yellow Car" were great as well

(Didn't know that today would have been his birthday.. Eerie) In 1985 233 albums made the Billboard Country Top 75; the only way to get to know the artists is to rely on their Greatest Hits packages. John Schneider's is cool, Alabama (First GH), also. Did like Vern Gosdin, Exile and (to my surprise) The Oak Ridge Boys. I know that Elvira song which is, well, not really my thing. :)

This is what I said about Dan Seals earlier this year (last month to be exact):
6. MILESTONE TOP TEN CHART: A song that was originally recorded for one album reappeared on this artist's first greatest hits CD. That song was One Friend, the artist's name was Dan Seals, and the CD was The Best. One Friend was our top song 27 years ago this week. The track listing for Seals' first greatest hits CD is as follows: 1. Three Time Loser-1987-#1 2. God Must Be A Cowboy-1984-#10 3. My Baby's Got Good Timing-1985-#2 4. You Still Move Me-1987-#1 5. Bop-1986-#1 6. Everything That Glitters Is Not Gold-1986-#1 7. Meet Me In Montana-with Marie Osmond-1985-#1 8. You Bring Out The Wild Side Of Me-1984-#9 9. My Old Yellow Car-1985-#9 10. I Will Be There-1987-#1 11. One Friend-1988-#1 One Friend originally appeared on Seals' 1984 CD, San Antone. The singles released from that CD were: You Bring Out The Wild Side Of Me, My Baby's Got Good Timing, and My Old Yellow Car. His version of She Thinks I Still Care is represented. That was a #1 hit for George Jones in 1962 and a #1 hit for Anne Murray as He Thinks I Still Care in 1974. The version of One Friend that is on the San Antone CD is just two minutes long. Seals knew the song had merit, so he and his producer, Kyle Lehning went to work on it. They rearranged the song and lengthened it to three minutes. They decided to put it on Seals' first greatest hits CD and it was his first release under the Capitol Records banner after he charted on the Liberty and EMI America nameplates over the previous four years. One Friend was released in October, 1987 and it hit the top spot the following January. It was his seventh consecutive #1 hit going back to his duet with Marie Osmond, Meet Me In Montana. The Best remains Seals' ONLY platinum CD. However, the next single did not appear for another six months. That was Addicted from the Rage On CD. The Cheryl Wheeler composition hit #1 in September, 1988. That was followed by another #1 in 1989, Big Wheels In The Moonlight. The nine in a row streak was snapped by the title track (#5). Seals entered the 1990s by releasing his final CD for Capitol called On Arrival. Love On Arrival, chart-wise his biggest hit, stayed at the top for three weeks. Good Times, the Sam Cooke song was a two week #1 and became Seals' final top ten hit. Bordertown ended his 1990 on a #49 note while Water Under The Bridge hit #57 in 1991. After a greatest hits CD was released in 1991, Seals was dropped by Capitol and signed to Warner Bros. Records. His debut for them, Walking The Wire yielded three chart singles: 1. Sweet Little Shoe-1991-#62 2. Mason Dixon Line-1992-#43 3. When Love Comes Around The Bend-1992-#51 His second and final CD for them, Fired Up contains his final chart appearance in All Fired Up (#66 in 1994). You can find an acoustic version of One Friend on Seals' 1995 release, In A Quiet Room which contains other Seals hits (In A Quiet Room II from 1998 continues the pattern). The Best was reissued in 2005 as The Best Of Dan Seals. Seals received radiation treatments for mantle cell lymphoma in 2008. Sadly, he passed away in March, 2009 at the age of 61. The most complete collection of Seals' music can be found on the 2011 CD, The Very Best Of Dan Seals on the Varese Sarabande label. Shortly after Seals' death, there was talk of a Seals & Seals CD with his brother James Seals (from Seals & Crofts). What happened to that anyway? This is what the chart looked like back then:
I think the problem with the 1991 Greatest Hits CD is that only two studio CDs were released between The Best and Greatest Hits (see above). After all, Seals only collected five more top tens since One Friend (off The Best that I had saluted). What's worse is that two songs are repeated on both collection CDs: Bop and Everything That Glitters Is Not Gold.

It wasn't just the "My heart's on fire for Elvira" chorus, but the fact it was repeated like 58 times. My favorite Oak Ridge Boys songs are "Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight" and "Someplace Green".

"Nowhere In The Neighborhood" was so good and it didn't even chart. If you're wondering I got "That's The Kind Of Love I'm In" on low volume since I have the Sabres/Islanders game on in the background. :) ^ Latest album artwork. Similar to the "Bad Things" single cover. :)

The whole album was really strong though and I'm really sad that barely anybody's heard the whole thing. At least he probably made some good money on "Bad Things"!

I'm not super familiar with Dan Seals' work, but "Big Wheels in the Moonlight," "Addicted", and especially "All That Glitters is Not Gold" are all great songs IMO. Other than that, I mostly agree with your assessment. I've tried listening to a couple of his studio albums and found them to be mostly forgettable, and I can't stand "Bop." Trent Willmon is good stuff and all kinds of underrated. I even like "Beer Man." The Willie Nelson album is really solid, too. He's been on a roll the past few years. I was busy today and didn't get to listen to much, and will be half-watching the Grammys tonight, but I will definitely resume posting in this thread tomorrow. The Jace Everett album is on my hard drive and I will be sure to give it a spin too and post my thoughts.

I was outside today doing yard work taking advantage of this unusually warm February day. I pulled up the truck to get some music going. I listened to Merle haggard quasi "comeback" album "BIg City". What a great album. He fell off a little in the late 70s but this album brought him back. Key tracks:
Big City This Song Is Mine - ode to his fans. And he calls out singers who don't write their own songs My Favorite Memory- one of the best haggard songs. Supposedly he wrote it about the famous female singer he had an affair with on his boat one summer. Rumors have said it was Tammy Wynette , Dolly Parton, or Tanya tucker Are The Good Times Really Over - this song still rings true 30'years later. I Always Get Lucky With You - great song. Like George jones version better though
If anyone here needs tips on classic albums of artists they want to get into, let me know. I have converted hundreds from vinyl to MP3.

Been listening hard to Sons of the Desert and Drew Womack this weekend. Drew's EP "15" is awesome and I love the remade "Whatever Comes First". I could listen to this stuff everyday.

She wrote Kentucky Gambler that Merle Haggard took to #1 in 1975. He said at the time he was fixated on her and he wrote Always Wanting You (about and for Parton), another #1 in 1975 for Haggard. I hope it was not Tanya Tucker as she was a teenager at the time.

Actually Tanya would have been 22 or 23 years old & wasn't opposed to dating older men as that would been around the time she was dating the much older Glen Campbell. I'm not saying it was or wasn't her , but she did mention Merle chased after her in those years a bit in her autobiography if I remember correctly.... John Schneider's is cool, Alabama (First GH), also. I'm quite the completest (is that even a word?) with my music collecting & have all of John Schneider's old vinyl records & none were really exceptional other than the singles , so the Greatest Hits is actually perfect. The same with Alabama too really.

Last 9 I listened to (love this thread by the way!) .... 07. "Never Really Wanted" (Eric Paslay) .... Cool selection and nice collage here. :) "Eric Paslay" is a late discovery of mine. Had shrugged the album off when released but now I do appreciate every song; there is absolutely no filler on the whole LP.

I do not think it is any of them because Dolly Parton is forever committed to Carl Dean, her husband, Tammy Wynette was married at the time to George Richey (and linked with Burt Reynolds, too), so that leaves Tanya Tucker, the only unmarried one in the bunch even though she was seeing Glen Campbell at the time. It could be someone else unless somebody comes up with something.

My last three albums (complete with 2-3 sentence reviews!). I hope to do about one of these at least every other day: Attachment DeletedThe Louvin Brothers - Satan is Real (1959) A bonafide masterpiece. Every song is a country-gospel classic. Some of the most moving performances ever. If there was a list of the top 10 most essential and influential country albums, I imagine this would have to be strongly considered. Attachment DeletedMerle Haggard and The Strangers - Branded Man (1967) Merle Haggard's 1960s recordings represent a master at the top of his game and this is no exception. While the well-known singles like the title track and "I Threw Away the Rose" are outstanding, it's the little-known album cuts like the racism-examining "Go Home" and the weeper "Long Black Limousine" that really round out the collection. Attachment DeletedDolly Parton - My Tennessee Mountain Home (1973) Apparently I was in the mood for some classic country today because here is another brilliant album. This is a concept album of sorts which examines Dolly's childhood and upbringing. Dolly Parton wrote every song single-handedly and proves why she is one of the greatest country songwriters to ever live. She has a way of making the most specific personal memories seem universally relatable. Whether you grew up in a mansion, a rundown shack like Dolly's that is displayed on the album cover, or something in-between, I can't imagine anyone listening to this album and not feeling something.

Bobby Wills: "Crazy Enough"- Mainstream country. Good album. This is a regular listen. Still love the poppy: " Never Didn't Love You". Brett Kissell: "Started With A Kiss" - Very solid offering from Canada. Strong production that blends perfectly into the current A-Lister's mainstream sound with a little bro edge. My pick: " Something You Just Don't Forget" and previous single: " Tough People Do" High Valley: "County Line" - Contemporary christian country. Easily their best effort. Stand-out track: " Make You Mine" I'm a total sucker for banjos/mandolyns/guitars and the frenzy intro and pace is so cool. Gord Bamford: "Country Junkie" - Polished Byron Hill production, but Gord still needs to find a sound he feels comfortable with (IMHO). Pick here is the Nov 2013 Canadian Country #1 single: " When Your Lips Are So Close". Would easily be an American #1 when re-recorded by say, Chris Young or Lee Brice. I'm currently strangely infatuated with his current single: " Groovin' With You" and " Unreal" Old Dominion: "Old Dominion (EP)" - Alt Rock/Southern. Still astonished at them being pushed at panel radio so hard. This EP rocks; every song's a winner. Pick is the ballad: " Nowhere Fast" (It's Track 3) Beck: "Morning Phase"- Grammy AOT. What else to say. Check it out; it is very, very good. Pick is the single: " Blue Moon" Jace Everett: "Mr. Good Times" - Pulse discovery. See posts above. Had already forgotten he once made the country charts. Exceptional album. Pick: " Nothing" (It's Track 6) Brandy Clark: "12 Stories" - Solid Roots album. Just beautiful; inside out. My pick: " Stripes" Soundtrack: "True Blood: Music From The HBO Original Series" - Compilation/Alt Rock/Southern. " Bad Things". What else to say; a master-piece.
