33 first week adds. I was actually hoping for 40 or more but Gary's time at radio is nearing an end and 33 adds shouldn't be a surprise at all (33 still isn't too shabby either). I do think this song can get him back to the top 20.
BTW: His last lead single, "Every Storm Runs (Runs Out Of Rain)" got 38 first week adds with 43 total stations by week one.

I know eventually Gary will lose his foothold at radio, but I'd be very disappointed if this song were to fall short of the top 10. Top 20 would probably mean he'll never get to the top 10 again, and I'm not ready for that. Perhaps I'm unrealistic, and I am letting my respect for him as an artist cloud my vision, but I expect this song to peak somewhere between #5 and 10 -- I'm calling my prediction for "#7" because I want to have a specific number.
Sure, it sounds too different to be guaranteed success. But it's going to sound so good on the radio. Somebody else besides us can hear that, right?

Somebody else besides us can hear that, right?Sure they can Zazie. 33 first week adds is very respectable but not exactly something to shout from mountain tops. It is 5 stations short of first week adds that "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)" got in September of 2012. "Hangover Tonight" does come in at #57 this week as well and should have a decent shot to crack the top 50 on MB next week and already has charted on Billboard, so there's plenty of room for optimism. To clarify, even though I believe Gary's time at radio is nearing an end, he will have a few hits still left in him - with this song having a good shot to be one of them. The more I hear this, the more I think it's not that different. Sure it has a bluesy feel that doesn't sound like what is being played on radio right now (I also agree with 43dudleyvillas that this would be right in James Otto's wheelhouse) but the production is what I expect and hope for if I'm a PD. The song touts that line well of being different but radio-friendly. I would love for this to peak at #7 since that was the peak of three of my all-time favorites from Gary ("Her Man", "It Would Be You", "Best I Ever Had") with the latter potentially being my absolute favorite.

This gets better with each listen....I LOVE this. Production is awesome, and Stapletons backing vocals are killer. I could see this being a big hit for Gary. Nice summer feel to this.

I finally heard this, and I like it a lot. IMO, it's the best lead single he's released since probably "A Feelin' Like That". Something like this is probably his best chance at a hit, so I hope it does really well for him.

Mediabase credits Chris Stapleton (one of the co-writers of the song who also provides backing vocals to the song) :

"Hangover Tonight" jumps from #57 to #48 this week on MB. You have access to different data than I get to see. This morning, Gary was at #50 on Kworb. This evening, even though two songs went recurrent, AllAccess doesn't list Gary in the top 50 at all (unlikely but true, as Atkins, Webb, and Dorr hold down the last 3 positions). Then I see your post... I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just puzzled. I'm hoping for a position in the 42 to 44 range on tomorrow's Billboard. Last week worked out nicely and I am hoping for a second straight solid week for Gary.

For some strange reason, Mediabase isn't showing #48 tonight. Atkins, Webb and Dorr(the bottom 3 positions today they show) are #s 49-51, and the skip Gary Allan at #48. They've done this before, but I always find it very odd.

The weekly Mediabase country PDF has the chart with "Hangover Tonight"'s last week position, if you scroll down to page 5 under "New Airplay," but yes I'm having the same problem with this not showing up on AllAccess. The chart just skips #48 and gives me an extra song, #51 ("Save Your Breath") instead. Probably just a glitch that will be fixed in tomorrow morning's update.

Gary's at #48 guys. "Hangover Tonight" is lower in spins than Rodney and Austin's songs; that's why they are ahead tonight on All Access. Every format on MB ranks by spins, but country is points, so some rookie mistakes were made (again) at All Access and for some reason they ranked the top 50 songs in spins rather than points. jhomes87 brought up the same type situation in the "All Country On You" thread two weeks ago ( here). Trust me, Gary's at #48. :)

I wondered what you'd say, Sabre, since you know better than I do. My experience has been, or at any rate ny interpretation of my experience has been, that MB ranks the songs based on points, but then won't list a song that isn't in the top 50 in spins even if it's in the top 50 based on points. So Gary is at #48 but they will list the top 50 songs in spins, and leave #48 blank, if he isn't in the top 50 in spins. (He wouldn't have to be at #48 in spins; anywhere in the top 50 would be good enough to get him listed.)
But my impression is that you don't think I'm right when I interpret the published data this way, and I am reluctant to contradict you because I'm a BB guy, not an MB guy, so you presumably know better.

I think this is actually correct, and it's what I was trying to say in the Austin Webb thread a few weeks ago, but I couldn't figure out a good way to say it. AllAccess isn't Mediabase themselves - they simply import Mediabase data. In my experience, they've had a few situations like this where the #51 or even #52 song will show, simply because those songs were top 50 in spins but not points. I've always imagined that these "errors" happen (or briefly appear) because the country format is the only one that ranks songs by points rather than simply by spins. So I imagined that the AllAccess server automatically imports the top 50 songs (based on spins) for each format, but then they have to (occasionally) go in and manually edit the country chart on Sunday night/early Monday for those occasions in which a song that's top 50 in points didn't quite finish top 50 in spins (and therefore wasn't showing on the Mediabase page on their website).

Here's a piece from Billboard's mid-week update today on Gary Allan's writing process and the fact that he wanted to record a song that Thomas Rhett already put on hold called "Crash And Burn". Props to Windmills, who first pointed this out. Billboard

I was actually expecting yet another dreary song from the title, but got a total opposite. I find Gary hard to take more than one song at a time because of the melancholy that's hung over nearly his entire catalog for the past decade. Granted, it's provided some damn fine music individually, but so much of it kinda overwhelms me at times. I was starting to wonder if it was even possible for him to loosen up any.

I'm really enjoying this one, but there's a line in the chorus that bothers me, simply because it's hard to tell what he's saying...and I don't really believe the lyric video, lol (even though it's on Gary's official YT page). According to the lyric video, the line is "hell with being sober, I wanna hangover tonight...feelings getting stronger, how could this be wrong girl"...which makes total sense, but it doesn't sound like he is singing the word "feelings" at all. To me it sounds like he's singing "Reese's getting stronger"...yes, as in the peanut butter cups. LOL.

On the lyric video, the last word of "want a hangover tonight" collides with "feelings" so it's hard to hear, but I went back over it a few times. And after the second verse it does sound like "feelings" to me, even if it is hard to hear. So it must be the same for the other verses too. On my fantasy version of the song, the lyric goes "make the countdown shows stronger, yeah, I want a top 40 tonight." You have to listen carefully to hear this set of lyrics. but I know you can do it. Let's go, Gary, you aren't really going to peak at #41 and deprive the whole country of being confused by your lyrics, are you?

Let's go, Gary, you aren't really going to peak at #41 and deprive the whole country of being confused by your lyrics, are you? Well Gary's song will unfortunately have to wait at least one more week to make the top 40 countdown shows as Parmalee and Luke's "Games" passed him this week on the rolling chart, which would put him at #42 with Jason's "Just Gettin' Started" the only one leaving tomorrow evening. He might even be #43 by tomorrow if Kacey jumps him. "Hangover Tonight" is up 60 spins and 230k in audience since Sunday (which is better than the 209k in audience it actually lost last week), so it is gaining but I'm really not feeling this chart run so far. I still expect this to make the top 30 but my gut feels this song will have a difficult time - especially compared to "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)", his last lead single. "Every Storm" was at #32 and had 7.0 million in audience on the MB chart at the point where "Hangover Tonight" is at now. I expect pretty much all of Gary's singles to have a slow climb since he's getting closer to the edge of obscurity with mainstream radio at his age, but the pessimistic side of me (fairly big side too) feels that "Hangover Tonight" might have a rockier road than I first expected. It's sill far too early though and I'm anxious to see how April and May fair for this single.

Well I knew that this would be a slower climb for Gary but I can safely say there's no way this matches the success of his last lead single, "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)."
At the six week mark, "Every Storm" sat at #22 on MB with an audience of 15.2 million and was on 126 monitored stations. "Hangover Tonight" in that same amount of time sits at #44 (counting the two recurrents tomorrow with Cole and Jake), with an audience of just 3.7 million and is on 78 monitored stations. Gary's actually lost 216k in audience over the past six days, and luckily for him he has gained 23 spins this week, otherwise he might go two unbulleted weeks in a row (granted, that could still happen by tomorrow's update) on MB.
I had a bad feeling this would happen, but this chart run will be quite the haul for MCA is they hope to see this get to the top 20. The fact they are fighting for Sam's song to get to #1 with super high numbers is partly to blame, no doubt, don't get me wrong (Josh's song too), but the longer this song stays in the 40's or even 30's, the higher likelihood this could under perform.
BTW: "Hangover Tonight" has lost 170k in audience since March 15th (27 days) on MB.

It's unfortunate, but it's looking more and more like "Every Storm" was just an anomally (and not the other way around). I thought "Hangover Tonight" would be doing better than it is, but I guess it isn't all that surprising. On the plus side, Gary is one of the only 90s artists left still able to at least come close to the top 40. Besides Reba, Tim, Kenny, Garth and George, we have Toby Keith, Gary and Trisha (who just missed, like Hary Might). People like Martina, Faith, Shania and Alan remain to be seen, since they haven't released anything in awhile. That's really good company for Gary to be in, even though he (and the rest of them) deserve so much better.

I agree that things aren't looking good for Gary, but he's not the only one that isn't going anywhere. There's of course Josh Turner and Rascal Flatts, both of whom are proven hit-makers. Newer artists like Dustin Lynch, Chase Rice, and Kip Moore have been spinning their wheels for weeks as well. Mickey Guyton is crawling along, and even Kacey Musgraves has come screeching to a halt (after a solid start). Eli Young Band is going nowhere. And there are a ton of artists down in the 50's that have gotten off to a pretty good start adds-wise, and I think they'd probably be in the 40's or even top 40 by now if it weren't for the sheer quantity of singles that have impacted radio in the last 1-2 months.
One thing I notice, when looking at the list above: aside from Mickey Guyton, all of these artists are proven hit-makers. It seems like almost everybody on the chart right now has scored at least 1-2 big hits in the last year or so, but now that they've all got singles out at the same time, they're all battling against each other...and nobody's winning.
The chart right now is about as crazy as I've ever seen it. Looking up and down the top 60, I see so many names that have scored big hits recently...and that just makes it a bloodbath when they're all on the chart at the same time.

Unfortunately when the chart is this stacked, there are always some casualties, and I hope Gary's song isn't one of them (not looking promising at the current time). I remember last summer was crazy and there were some that didn't make it out ("Young In America", "Clockwork", "What I Can't Put Down', "I Wish I Could Break Your Heart", "Night That You'll Never Forget", "Dirt Road").

This song keeps losing audience on the BB charts, but getting bailed out by small spins increases so that it keeps its bullet. Otherwise the song would already be going recurrent.
Eventually that will stop working, but he's got a couple more weeks to work his way into the MB top 40 and thereby debut on the countdown shows. That might help -- but even there, no guarantees. This could be starting to fall any day, even though I'd prefer anything but that.

What really would have helped Gary this week was Luke's spring EP song "Games" not being in the top 40 - that would have given Gary countdown spins next weekend. Like you said though, that's not going to be enough alone if this one does flounder. It's still early though (6 weeks), and the fact "Hangover Tonight" gained spins, it was able to get it's bullet back on MB. The charts are still stacked like jhomes87 said, so I need to see how the next couple weeks play out, but this past month has certainly been a rough one for Gary's song. Edit: Zazie "Hangover Tonight" got 20 adds this week, bringing it's total to 98 stations. :)

I'm suspecting that it's the Cumulus block (plus maybe a half-dozen non-Cumulus stations), but we won't know for sure until tomorrow when AllAccess will list the new stations. It could be a big batch of Clear Channel stations too, or maybe the new adds are of a more mixed variety, but I'm guessing not. There's no denying that this song has been struggling, so suddenly pulling 20 adds out of the blue leads me to believe that it has something to do with one of the big conglomerates deciding to "block add" this one. Obviously I'm not complaining--this song needs a big jolt. Now with 20 new stations on board, I'm thinking Gary's about to have a pretty decent week.

No bullet even though the song gained in spins -- I'm supposed to understand the Billboard rules, and I think I do -- but I sure don't know how they enforce their rules. Seems so random.
On the other hand, the huge adds total (on both MB and BB) makes this one of the better days for this song despite the 45-48 drop with loss of bullet on BB. Now let's see this song go from losing a bullet to being greatest gainer. Well, maybe not, but still, this could be a nice revival for Hangover. Top 40 on MB a week from yesterday, at the very least.
EDITED to reflect Tuesday morning's disappointing update, with a loss of 1k audience. I guess we have to be patient, and the gains will start to appear later in the week. At least spins were up 16, and this song's just got to have a strong week now and reach the top 40 on MB. If Reba can have a giant overnight gain, which she did, then so can Gary.
