Yea a surprise would do somewhat as well as like Madonna's 100% leaked album.

In my opinion a surprise release never was a good idea for someone like Rihanna.
She is a hitmaker, but the sales of her albums are good but not spectacular. A surprise release it's simply too risky, and because an artist is popular enough to try it doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it
I'm not exactly in love with this song, but we'll have to wait a bit. Yes, it didn't perform well on itunes till now, but not all songs are instant catchy. In the past her label was not too patient with songs that didn't make an instant impact but she has a long career now, and i will be very surprised if radio doesn't give this a try

I really want to like this song - it has so much potential. The "messy/uneven" production just isn't doing it for me.

I wish they really put effort into promoting BBHMM instead of this.

I wish they really put effort into promoting BBHMM instead of this. But promoting BBHMM seems quite pointless now, at least on pop radio. She pulled a complete Skyfall with the song, and it's not climbing at good rhythm after returning to top 50. Maybe a video could have some impact on the hot 100 but i doubt pop radio change its mind about the song

A video will easily push BBHMM into Top 10 on Hot 100 then its mission accomplished for that song. It's the pop single they need to worry about. The fact this fell right out of the Top 100 is worrisome, even if it was out weeks before its official release.
I'm sure her label is closely analyzing everything as we speak. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if they pull the adds date (which is today) last minute, and try something else.

For the love of God, get her back with Calvin Harris or Stargate. I need anthems.

I hate it when artists go that "experimenting" phase because they usually fuck up their careers when they do that

I want to like this song and for the first bit I am PUMPED. Like, the first minute sounds epic to me and I am into it and then it just dies and I don't care.

This is a good thing.

Calm down. She's doing just fine. So what, she turned a few fans off? She's still successful and I'm sure she'll still be successful afterwards.

I love the verses on this but the rest of the song does nothing to me. I also don't think the last minute and half was necessary.

The interesting thing is that as much as she has been criticized for making of the moment hits, that's where she's had the biggest and most lasting impact. It's been the parts where she's slyly injected something into very commercial aspirations. SOS was built to be a hit, and yet was the first in a while to have such an obvious dance influence. DSTM saw that coming and rode the wave too, in the process becoming a very important record for the breakthrough of dance music into mainstream America. The ella-ellas in Umbrella, that stutter effect and style became a signature of hers. Rude Boy launched that faux-island period for Stargate and people tried to copy that. When the EDM influence was at it highest, she went to Calvin Harris, who was already on the cusp of breaking out, and made one of the biggest songs of that style. You can even say that Diamonds and Stay helped radio enter into a period where slower tempo songs were more welcome, but she was again going for what had been gaining more popularity for a bit.
On the other side, look at the down moments in her career. Trying to prove her edge too hard with the launch of Rated R, the traditional AC of California King Bed, whatever the hell Rockstar 101 was. The ironic thing is that once she stopped that, she ended up naturally just becoming edgier.
My main point is that it's unfortunate that the setup for this project is making it into something else than what it's most likely going to be. It's a mostly natural progression for her with some inputs from Kanye. They're not making any kind of "new" sound, they're just channelling what's out there and has gotten more popular in the past few years. Which is what she and her team have always done, perhaps now with a wider scope. Saying things like her past material wasn't deep enough or lacked something, diminishes the actual impact she's had. She's had a tremendous amount of impact in mainstream music, multiple times. And it has been by knowing what was coming and incorporating that, in the process building a big name for herself. I remember an interview she did right before Loud came out where she acknowledged that her fans din't know her and her goal from then on was to project more of her actual personality. She's been tremendously successful at that too, she's one of the most instantly identifiable celebrities today. She's proven herself over and over, more than any other act of her generation by far. If you doubt her power by now, you need to update your calendar. I don't know where you have been, but today Rihanna is one of the music industry's biggest titans, a position which she has earned through a decade of virtually non-stop work.

I think Rihanna is a lot like Britney in that her music is at once way undersold by the general public but also incredibly overhyped by fans. Since 2005, she has definitely been able to successfully navigate a bunch of different sounds while still maintaining a mostly consistent musical identity but her work has been almost entirely devoid of risk or innovation to me and she's an inconsistent album artist. At best she has helped ushered in trends by being the first major pop singer to embrace them but she has hardly broken new ground with her music aside from introducing sounds and trends to a mainstream audience. To me, her albums aside from Rated R and GGGB have always been incredibly uneven and filled with fluff. Even Unapologetic, which had some of her career highs, was watered down by half-baked filler.
I would hope that in the 3-ish years since she's released a full album she's created a strong full body of work but so far, I'm not sure. James Joint and BBHMM are ace but FourFive Seconds never caught on to me. This song sucks too.

This is my favorite song of hers since "We Found Love". It isn't immediate and her vocals are understated but the beat knocks. It'll flop but I hear major growth in this song. While everyone wants the commercial radio hits I'll take this artistic approach.

I'm also disappointed with this era so far, and I blame Kanye, but this song has been a grower to me. Very Lana Del Rey.

I don't like BBHMM, 45S burnt out on me quickly, and this song hasn't grown on me yet. However, like others, I also wonder it's because the album will need to be listened to as a cohesive piece of work and not one that's based on singles + filler. If that is the case, then I am excited to hear it. I actually like the songs from the "Home" soundtrack, so I think there's hope for a great era here.

I still love BBHMM so very excited about the album although AO is quite sub-par for her.
