Not going to happen - this got pulled from PlayIGA today, which is as good a sign as any that promotion for it has ceased. Bummer. One day later the spins start to realllly bleed. Ouch.

Suddenly King is at 151 on itunes (way higher than when it was charting).
Maybe they should try a second run (but this time with a real push and good promo) when they release the album.
By the way, Shine is number 2 on the UK singles chart

Well, it seems they are releasing the album this week so probably that's the reason for the rise on itunes.
Big mistake again, they should wait at least a week. Releasing an album which was a big success on UK first it's an easier sale

Yeah the album is out in the US. It's good too! I think it's a disgrace this isn't top 10 right now!

This song has grown a lot on me. It's a shame it has done so poorly in the US.

Generally it's way better to focus in your own country first, and then (if you are successful) try to break in the USA wich is a very difficult market

The "Global Release Date" change went into affect to make Friday the day new music is released worldwide. Historically, Britain has seen albums come out on Mondays; the U.S. on Tuesdays, Japan on Wednesdays and Germany and Australia on Fridays...now every country will release on Friday. However, labels/acts have the choice to choose which Friday they want their album to be released in particular markets. It would be very silly to say "Oh if you're album is out in one country, it must be released worldwide on the same day." I think....? Kurt?

But then again, wasn't the whole point of the global release date to curb internet piracy? In which case, once it's out in one place, it's essentially out everywhere anyway. I do think it'd be detrimental to so many acts to have to release everywhere at the same time, especially in terms of first week promo. Anyway, back to Years & Years I don't think waiting to release the album would have helped them anyway. Especially after "King" flopped, they were never going to have a smash first week opening. If anything, they'll have to break the US the indie way and slowly build momentum. They should release "Shine" and be much more present for its promotional rollout.

Good question, and not something I've seen confirmed/denied, but I think you're right. I haven't seen anything from the IFPI stating albums must come out on the same day, and the New Music Fridays website notes that there will be exceptions to the rule (see: Carly Rae Jepsen). Piracy is the underlined reason for the change, and if an artist is unknown, they don't really have to worry about that, so I agree that forcing the same release date would be silly.

Well Carly Rae Jepsen's album is an example of releasing an album later. It's out now on some countries, while the U.S. is getting it in August.
ETA: Oh Kurt made the same example lol

Yes, that has way more sense, even if you are a relatively known artist, you need to heavily promote your album in the USA. For british acts it will be a little problematic to promote both markets at the same time.

I believe the Friday releases aim to (try to) enhance the well-known declining sales. It's based on the assumption that more people would buy music during weekends.
