I agree. Definitely not what "How Country Feels" was, as that song really created some buzz for the album back in 2013. But I do believe "Little Bit Older" will be bigger than this song. Has smash hit written all over it. Just listened to "Little Bit Older," and it is much more the type of singing I want to hear from a guy with Randy Houser's voice. I like that the song is more laid back in groove and that he has more room to tailor his phrasing to be more conversational. As for how much of a hit it will be, I'm not sure I have a read of radio anymore other than the obvious candidates. But the blues in the song certainly feels like a shoutout to the mark that Chris Stapleton is making, and it definitely makes more sense for Randy Houser to tip his hat in that direction than in the direction of more rhythmic, rapid-fire Luke Bryan-ish style of "We Went."

I'm still shocked this song made it all the way to the top, I've heard it so many times and I still can't really tell you how it goes. Such a forgettable song for me. "Little Bit Older" however is great and I can't wait for them to move on to it!

"Back" is available on iTunes and shortly Spotify...another gem. Outstanding vocal performance and lyrics. Very impressed with that one and Little Bit Older already. Can't wait for the album to drop! These 2 new ones have me really pumped.

This is having some massive gains to start the week so far. It'll be curious if they settle for the MB only #1 of if they push one extra day for the Billboard #1. I'm selfishly rooting for this song to get a week at #1 and block "Heartbeat". I know "Heartbeat" is the bigger hit, but I like this one miles better, and I want to see Randy have as much momentum as he can heading into his second single.

I don't think securing the Billboard #1, with the Mediabase #1 will do any extra help for his next single. His momentum is fine right now and even if "We Went" was somehow shutout of any #1, he'd still be fine. Judging by Randy's gains, I think "We Went" is still trailing "Heartbeat" by 800k-1.0 million in Billboard audience. Randy started the Billboard week trailing by 2.5 million and "We Went" has gained 2.4 million in audience over the past three days while "Heartbeat" has gained just 800k. "We Went" should overtake "Heartbeat" on Mediabase before the weekend and since the audience gap is so close, it looks like Randy will take Billboard as well, although we still have some time to go and we don't know whether Broken Bow Music Group will push through Sunday (which I'm guessing would happen). Sony looks quite content to make "Heartbeat" a one week #1 hit on both charts the following week.

Sony looks quite content to make "Heartbeat" a one week #1 hit on both charts the following week. While I do think it's possible for Randy to pass Carrie on Billboard, I still think Carrie is the favorite there. Unlike last week, Sony is obviously fighting this week. They probably won't make too much of a fuss if Randy takes the Mediabase #1 (since he's closer to Carrie on MB than he is on BB), but given that Carrie had such a big Billboard lead on Monday, I think Sony will try to hold off Randy there. Like you said, Randy has probably closed that gap quite a bit, but I think he's going to have a harder time gaining ground over the next few days, mostly because I anticipate bigger gains for "Heartbeat" as we finish out the week. I'd love to see Carrie block Randy completely, although I do think Houser will at least get the MB #1. But I much prefer "Heartbeat" and it's obviously a much bigger hit than "We Went" is, so I'd like to see that reflected in the two songs' peak positions on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. In any case, at least the two labels aren't playing nice with each other. I know I sound like a broken record here, but I absolutely hate the whole "take your turn" approach that competing labels take. Quite frankly I think it's ridiculous, and I think it diminishes what it actually means to be/have a #1 hit. So for once, it's nice that we are seeing two labels battling with each other for the #1 spot -- that's how it should be.

I agree but 99% of fans don't have any idea what's going on here. They hear #1 single and that's all that registers to them. Labels and radio have probably convinced themselves everything's peachy in terms of the way songs "earn" #1 airplay achievements. Most of the people who care (know) about what happens are the people who are colluding to make that something happen in the first place, which is everyone takes their turn at #1 and we sing "kumbaya". This story line is getting more attention the past 2-3 years in terms of media spotlight but not enough people care for it to make any sort of difference. The only hope we have is radio people like hired consultants convincing the masses of the genre that long lasting #1's are the way to go, like the early to mid 2000's (which you and I discussed in a recent PM). I don't foresee 2016 being much better (if at all) to 2015 and 2014 with amount of #1 songs.

You mean to tell me that they're not up in arms about the revolving door at #1? I'm obviously well aware that it's like this and that most listeners aren't even aware of how the radio charts work. However, I'm one of the enlightened ones and I'd prefer a better representation of what the biggest hits are. :) "We Went" is simply not that big of a hit -- it's getting a lot of airplay, but none of the other indicators (notably, sales and streams) suggest that it's a big hit worthy of all that airplay.

I guess my statement was that most folks don't get the sense of this practice "diminishing" a #1 song's validity. It clearly diminishes it in the eyes of you or I (along with the consensus at Pulse) but unfortunately, our collective voices fall on deaf ears. I still contend that "We Went" and others like it would have come nowhere close to #1, 10-15 years ago. Yes, I know times have changed and it might not be fair to compare the world of Country radio in March of 2006 to March of 2016 (I've heard the apples to oranges argument) but I think this one would have peaked in the teens back then, but the album would have still likely been released since labels knew 40 week chart runs weren't entirely realistic. The whole landscape is different nowadays and this has become the norm at radio and on the airplay charts.

#1 on both Mediabase and Billboard Airplay this week. Randy edged Carrie by 400k in audience on BB.

I'm glad this got a week at #1, I like it so much better than "Heartbeat". Hopefully Randy can have another successful album era this time around, although admittedly single #2 is going to be crucial in stabilizing the era.
