Thinspirational™ Icon Sam Smith is presumably working on new music for those who were enthralled by his imaginary tales of chasing the D.
Might be just a tad bit early, but between the mentions on social media about writing again, the new Disclosure collaboration, and with them seeming to have finished with releasing singles internationally from In The Lonely Hour, eyes are slowly starting to shift to the follow up.
I found his debut to be way too similar and boring, but his other tracks (the EP, bonus/international tracks, collaborations) have been very impressive. I hope for more outward experimentation like I did with Ed Sheeran's sophomore. I wouldn't be surprised if his popularity dips somewhat given how big he started out, but I do think he's more than capable of making solid, strong material.
Can we expect a Martha Stewart Interlude instructing us towards cleaner eating?

Agreed on the whole album sounding the same. I loved "I'm Not The Only One". He should def incorporate more dance-esque("Latch") for the next album.
Also, I liked him chubby, but he is cute slim.

"In the Lonely Hour" crossed the 2M sales mark in the US this week.

I have a good feeling about his sophomore album being great. He's gotta be in a better space than In the Lonely Hour. Hoping for some upbeat, happy music. His voice sounds great on dance tracks. More please!

Damnit, I thought his debut was phenomenal. He went risky to go the soulful ballad route considering his sexuality was so up in the mix too.
Very few pop males can match his vocal abilities. And I thought it was his range that was able to keep a possible samey sounding album sound like a collection of unique heartfelt stories.

Sam need to take risks with the new album. In The Lonely Hour is too safe and polished, and predictable.

Agreed that the debut was definitely too safe all around, but especially in his performance which felt, to me, too stiff. I'd like some more upbeat stuff, if only because he sounds more loose and free than he does doing ballads, which he could improve upon. In any case, I hope a new album is out this fall.

Sam need to take risks with the new album. In The Lonely Hour is too safe and polished, and predictable. ... and BORING. Honestly, based on features like "Latch" and EP songs like "Nirvana" I figured Sam would be someone I'd root for and listen to once his own album came out. But.... no. I wasn't expecting him to emerge as an adult contemporary balladeer and I think it's crucial he step outside of that box a little this time.

I saw Sam last night in Charlotte.
I was so impressed with him. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. His voice is just magical.

Another version of In The Lonely Hour was just released with the new single Drowning Shadows. So maybe he can milk ITLH a little longer.

I'm surprised there was no real word on this this year. He pretty much fell off the Earth after the Oscars.
Listening to a few tracks on The Weeknd's album reminded me again of Sam's wasted potential so far.

I've really lost a ton of interest in him, to be honest. His album burned fast for me, as did his voice, and his Bond song was a massive disappointment to me, as well. I'm sure whatever he comes back with will do well, but I'm not particularly interested in him if there isn't some sort of sonic or thematic shift. If it's a 'Lonely Hour' 2.0, count me out. If he starts gravitating towards lighter tempos, I'll scan through the record to see if it's worth a buy.

Oh I totally support him. There's not many openly gay pop stars achieving his level of mainstream success.
He has a very unique voice and he sings about some pretty sappy subjects.
I'm all about him. Bring him on.

I really liked him when he first sprang on the scene but now whenever one of his songs comes on, it really grates. I'm not sure why.

Hopefully he's working on his 2-step in the meantime because his groove attempts when I saw him live were tragic.
I don't get why his management thought taking a full extra year off was a good idea. While the question of US success is still in the air for his follow-up, I think he could have very well released during Q4 last year and done major numbers in the UK.
Every time I hear the verses from The Weeknd's Secrets, I can't help but think how great his voice would sound on an album of that type of material. Be the squealing broody 90s Club Diva Tevin was never allowed to be Sam!

I feel about him the same way I felt about Ed Sheeran after +. There's potential, and I liked a few tracks from his debut but the next album will be make or break.
Also, that Bond song was tragic and not in a good way.

While the question of US success is still in the air for his follow-up, I think he could have very well released during Q4 last year and done major numbers in the UK. This certainly does nothing to discourage the opinion that they have been trying to make him a male Adele, down to the extended time off between albums. The sooner they accept that he isn't Adele, the better. She can pull off with the strictly-AC stance but when Sam does it I find it kind of dreary and lacking in tempo. I definitely prefer when he experiments because his voice with unexpected production typically equals excellence. Working with Timbaland sounds promising, on paper at least. I know Timbaland will have random moments of mediocrity, hopefully this won't be one of them.

I don't feel like it's too long of a break. I still hear him here and there when I'm out and about. If he comes back with quality, and the right song that depicts evolution but echoes why his debut was successful, he'll be fine. Just don't go too left field or try to repeat the past singles.
