It's likely the falsetto. The 'backlash' s**t reads more wishful thinking and the personal issues of those making the comments than anything else. Locked Away being a big radio hit recently with Adam singing the hook says otherwise. For me, it's definitely the falsetto. Definitely has a nails on chalkboard quality to it. I hope this does worse than This Summer's Gonna Hurt. Makes me appreciate the radio edit of that one more.

So this gets awful callouts. Interscope gives up. Radio stops playing it.
Fast forward a few weeks: its callouts are now passable. #18/31 for net positive.
This once again calls into question the credibility of the research. Familiarity hasn't markedly improved, which means the samples aren't legitimate. If this week's panel has a dramatically different perspective than last week's panel, there's something wrong with how CMM is determining whom to survey.
(And even if familiarity had improved, there's no reason why we should see this drastic "normalization" effect that we so often see. 60% familiarity of a 4000 person panel is 2400. If selected correctly, 2400 people should be able to give you the market's opinion within a decently small margin of error)

Well, the sales were shit for this one anyways. But yeah, I don't think callouts are reliable.
