I'm torn; I wish both Demi and Pentatonix could hit #1. :( They will if the latest numbers hold true. ;)

I wonder how close over the decades #1 and #2 were from being tied?

If we were to compare Demi to a pop star of equal stature from a Period of Relevance Past, who would she be? I just found out that this is her fifth album and I'm wondering, either where have I been or where has she been because I can only recall a few songs by her. Would she be considered a pop staple right now?

Looks like Taylor will complete her year in the top 10 and be at no 7 after 52 weeks
In their 52nd weeks Speak Now and Red were at no 43 at no 83 respectively - and they were considered hit eras, but 1989 is something else!
Anyone know where the debut and Fearless were at this point?

There are 5 others. The only sales #1 to be #3 however, was Don Henley (the others were #2)

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298185Friday, October 23, 2015 THIS CHART IS A MOUTHFUL A Cappella Stars Pentatonix Score #1 Album, Pop Powerhouse Demi Lovato Tops SPSIn a neck-and-neck race, RCA’s a cappella wunderkinds Pentatonix have topped the HITS Album Sales Chart with 82k for their self-titled set—a follow-up to the multi-platinum holiday album, That’s Chirstmas to Me, which was the fourth biggest selling album of 2014. Meanwhile, Safehouse/Island/Hollywood’s Demi Lovato, who took #2 on the album chart with 75k, has topped the Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart with 96k for her fifth studio album since 2008, Confident. The rest of the Top 5 was comprised of new releases from Bad Boy/Interscope’s Machine Gun Kelly (#3, 47k), eOne’s The Game (#4, 45k) and Everything Evil’s Coheed & Cambria (#5, 30k). A total of nine artists debuted in the Top 15 this week when you include Razor & Tie’s Kidz Bop Kids (#6), Hillsong’s Hillsong Worship (#11), eOne’s Joe Budden (#12) and Interscope’s BØRNS (#13). Also noteworthy: eOne had three albums in the Top 15 for what might be the first time ever. The only thing we’ve ever had three of at a time is C&Ds. Powered by a $5.99 sale at iTunes, TDE/Aftermath/Interscope’s Kendrick Lamar and Polo Grounds/RCA’s A$AP Rocky both re-entered the chart with percentage bumps over 100%.This week’s biggest beneficiary of SPS was XO/Republic’s The Weeknd, whose Beauty Behind the Madness saw a 38k difference between the two charts. Streeting this week are albums from Capitol’s 5 Seconds of Summer, 19/Arista Nashville’s Carrie Underwood, We the Best’s DJ Khaled, Capitol’s Rod Stewart, Dine Alone’s Vanessa Carlton and Virgin’s Seinabo Sey, along with a greatest hits set from Warner Bros.’ Blake Shelton.

If we were to compare Demi to a pop star of equal stature from a Period of Relevance Past, who would she be? I just found out that this is her fifth album and I'm wondering, either where have I been or where has she been because I can only recall a few songs by her. Would she be considered a pop staple right now? Honestly, Disney** stars are a bit incomparable; they come from a unique situation that isn't easily measured against traditional career trajectories. Disney in itself is its own industry ecosystem and with just one or maybe two exceptions, its acts typically will be commercially viable while at the same time being virtually nonexistent to the mainstream market and radio formats. For the most part Disney stars aren't considered to be 'real' stars or have legitimate careers - that is to say, a gold album from 15-year old Demi was not given the same level of respect that a gold album from a Colbie Caillat or Kacey Musgraves would have been. It seems that almost all the credit is given to Disney for grooming these stars and giving them the opportunity, but none given to the kids for having the talent and being the ones putting in the actual work to make the opportunity worth it. We act like their childhood successes don't really count for anything, but when they try to move on to adult careers we don't regard them as 'new' artists either, and we measure them against what they previously have done. We don't take into account that as they get older and try to forge a new image or sound, they will shed old fans more quickly than they will gain new ones. Being in Disney's shadow makes it harder for them to gain fans than it probably should be because some people have their anti-pop or anti-kiddie googles on and don't want to admit that they'd bop to some Disney brat's new single or album. I'm not sure if/when/how they'd ever get completely past that hurdle. So far Miley's the only one who has superseded her Disney roots - however, on a small level that is really no different from the fact that out of thousands and thousands of people trying to make it in the industry, only a select few will make it to the very top. A larger number of people (still a small group overall) will do just fine and make a living out of it. Just on sheer probability it makes sense that only one so far made it to A-list status while a few others are hovering in B/B- territory. All that considered, along with the general trend in declining sales, I think Demi and Selena did all right. They're B-list acts with A-list name recognition, and there's not really anything wrong with that. Demi's release ended up catching her somewhat in between singles so her SPS numbers are somewhat lower than they could be, but this hopefully means that the title track's rise up the charts softens the album's drops over the next few weeks. **focus was on Disney but Ariana could fit this too, being Nickelodeon's only notable post-Nick star at the moment.

It's amazing how Pentatonix evolved through the years to mainstream success. By the logic of talent shows, they should had fade a long time ago (if my memory doesn't fail the first two winners of the show didn't even hit the top 100 on the albums chart which is not rare because acapella is not exactly the flavour of the month) but they not only pass that fate but they came stronger with every album. Radio will be probably way more difficult to conquer

HITS' SPS chart is messed up- the total for Ms. Jackson's album is lower than it is on the sales chart. Lol
