I think after she released the live video of this without the clarification of it being a second single, after hello peaked radio was very eager to play the next single so they played the song that they likely thought it would be. Label still was undecided but because of the radio AirPlay just went with it. By the time they wanted to plan all of this promo it was already peaking which is why the plans were scrapped. wasted opportunity imo but it doesn't really matter because it's still selling very well.
Singles should go: WUTB SML AIA end era.
Not here for a third ballad

Kind of reminds me of Katy Perry's Prism. Huge first single, second one stalls outside the top 10 but the third one smashes anyway. (Assuming they go with Water Under the Bridge) ;) .

I don't care what she releases next, I love the whole album. As long as WUTB is a single I'm happy!

Really really curious to see what they choose next. Everyone was expecting one thing, but it doesn't seem as though her team is following any particular pattern. It's really a coin toss whether or not they choose AIA, WUTB, or SML next. Or something else entirely, since the AIA performances were sort of a curve ball.

The album's gonna continue shifting units, regardless of what position "When We Were Young" reaches on various charts. The 20-14 climb is a decent one, though- top 15. :)

The format this is really super strong on is AC. Either way the song gets great airplay as does Hello and 25 is at #1 again as it moves toward 9 million so any airplay for her songs just keeps helping to sell 25. Not a bad strategy!

She doesn't have another hit on the album (whether it matters or not.) Judging by the response, no one wants All I Ask either. People got over the hype quickly and realized 25 sucks. This is just flat out not true. "All I Ask" jumped into the top ten on iTunes both after the viral video of the carpool karaoke and after the Grammy performance. It's still #25 a week after the performance, which is a better showing than most of the performances! Also, everyone is entitled to their own musical opinion, but calling 25 objectively bad is absolutely the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen on this site. Yes, the album that took the entire world by storm and has received the most acclaim in decades, probably going down as one of the classics with Thriller and Dark Side of the Moon, is actually bad. Oops, our mistake!

Consider the poster who's staying this; if it were Justin Timberlake the tune he's singing would be HELLA different.

Yeah, saying this album has the most acclaim in decades and that it will land with the aforementioned classics is a big stretch. 25 had astronomical sales in its first few months but will it consistently chart for the next thirty+ years? Not to mention the artistic achievements of Thriller and DSOTM. A little quick to make those determinations.
BUT no, obviously we shouldn't be worried or yelling flop about any of this. AIA's iTunes performance following any type of exposure has been outstanding, it's just a *little* confusing why WWWY hasn't gotten the same level of promotion.
Clearly they are playing by their own rules (and they can) but I hope the next single is either SML or WUTB and that it gets a real video and at least one prominent, timely performance. The album has a lot of potential and while I understand Adele doesn't want to focus on singles so much as focusing on the album, pushing a single (especially one as strong as WWWY, SML or WUTB) will be good for the album and its/her legacy.

Not to mention the artistic achievements of Thriller and DSOTM. A little quick to make those determinations. It could, we don't know. It certainly has the best shot of any album released in the past 20 years. But, let's be clear about this, I was in no way referring to its chart success. I was referring to its potential to be a monumental moment in music history in the way those albums are (musical impact, general public's love for the album, the "classic" feel of the album, etc.). Of course we can't tell if it will or won't be right now, but how it's all currently playing out? Well, it wouldn't surprise me if it was. Adele doesn't want to focus on singles so much as focusing on the album And this is why I feel that way. The majority of the album's tracks have already been performed on television in one way or another, ingraining the entire album into the general public's musical knowledge, much like how nearly every track of DSOTM and Thriller are regarded as staples for their respective artists. Plus, the whole idea of not paying attention to singles that much is something that could play out so well for her that it inspires other artists to follow suit, much like how Beyoncé made surprise releases from big artists much more common.

I honestly feel like 21 has a better shot of joining the ranks of DSOTM and Thriller than 25 does, but that's just me. Not saying 25 won't, or that 21 will, but 21's consistency and longetivity has been unbelievable over the last few years.

Not easy to say what's going to happen in the future. However, this already IS a moment in history. 25 is a humongous hit already and keeps being sold and sold. If it has a great Grammy night next year, this could be well on its way to a super classic. Now about WWWY, I'm disappointed and frustrated at the messy rollout. The fears came through and no it's not the best outcome at all. The strategy of not focusing on WWWY was not good in my opinion, not only because it could've been a much bigger had it received more performances and a video, but also because it's sort of screwed the potential of AIA already. If AIA is released as a single later its performances would be felt as repeats, and single sales would have already been made by fans. Similar to Turning Tables. Would've been great to have a top 10 hit out of this song, and I think it was reachable... Now it doesn't seem likely

Peaking even at 12 on pop radio is still incredible for Adele. It's all based on what the label is going far. I think the need for new Adele music and with hello getting massive play overshadowed this. Which is probably why they mixed in another ballad as a "throwawAy". Send my love and water under the bridge will both be #1 hits though.

I remember previewing the album Send My Love was the ONLY song which was standout. ( I bought that one and still listening to it) As for a casual listener 25 is really overrated.

There is no rush for any new songs at radio. Hello is still on all the time and WWWY right behind it. A third single can wait for April or May. This era will last into the Grammy's in 2017 so she has lots of time. Nice to see 25 at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart for a 10th Week!

What on earth are they doing? They released one song to radio, didn't release a music video, and promoted a different song at most TV performances. With a music video and with her streaming power, this should have had no problem to reach the Top 10 on the Hot 100 while also helping the album to sell more copies. In fact, it wouldn't even surprise me if the music video had an effect on it's radio performance!

We are all just voicing our own opinions here but to me 21 is a much stronger album. I just don't think Adele would be the superstar she is today had these two albums been released in reverse. That's not to say that 25 won't win tons of awards like 21 did but to the casual fan I just think the songs are stronger on 21 minus Hello which is a classic song like Rolling In The Deep.

I don't think you can really measure Adele's success with singles once the album has been released - at least not in the same way as artists who sell singles in droves but in comparison struggle to sell albums. 21 was an anomaly in my opinion, in many ways. As long as she has a single at radio and the album is shifting units, the desired outcome has been reached.
The focus is on the album, not the songs - that's obvious from all this split promotion, which may be frustrating for those among us who love seeing singles skyrocket up the charts because the focus/promotion is more balanced, but it does mean she'll continue to move albums.
Take Teenage Dream for example - each single was a major event (remixes and the like) and a chart success, because that made sense for Katy Perry - her album shifted an OK amount by today's standards, but not masses. Nor did initial promotion balance performances across a few different songs as Adele has with 25 (AIA, WUTB, Hello, WWWY etc), which is part of the reason she had basically the entire album in the Top 20 on iTunes. Katy's singles could see mega success because the vast majority of people had never heard the songs and thus hasn't bought them, nor did she promote them upon album release so sales were very concentrated into a few weeks rather than across the album campaign. Radio is a different matter I'm sure, but that's sort of how I've made sense of what's going on.

Let's face it, if ADELE cared about H100 placement, she would've done the little things that would've pushed WWWY into the Top 10 or higher. I fairly certain with all her anxiety about following up '21,' '25' has exceeded even her most optimistic dreams. I'm sure she is OK with '25' returning to #1 and WWWY at 14 (and Hello at 7) rather than the other way around.
The other factor with WWWY - it's reception has been lukewarm internationally - so US is not an anomaly - it's only hit Top 10 in one major music market (Canada).

Well, i think that could be true for 19, the album was a success without any presence in pop radio. It's true that she will always be an album artist but 21 changed the game, and not only for her, i think Sam Smith owes a lot to Adele for paving the path on radio, and probably more artist will benefit from Rolling in the deep effect, because that song opened the gates and after that everything was easier.
I didn't heard most of the song of 25 but most people seems to think 21 was better. It's very difficult to follow such monster album, but she succeeded no matter what happens from now on, but now she is a pop diva and people expect her singles to do well too 25 is a monster album too, but it will be difficult to compete with the great singles era that 21 had (and it could be even better if she was on the mood to promote it, because 21 had more potential smashes than the ones that ended being released)
