It's true that Coldplay doesn't have a hit this time around but
A. While I understand that is a factor, it doesn't really change anything. The album doesn't have a hit and the first week sales are way off from previous Coldplay albums. It may make this less surprising but it doesn't really make it better.
B. I thought 7 albums in to their career, the presence or lack of a hit wouldn't be too important for Coldplay, especially when we're comparing this era to GS with "Magic" - that wasn't THAT big of a hit.
C. Not trying to be dramatic - these numbers aren't dreadful and 200k is way better than the initially projected 150k. But it remains a steep drop-off from 383k last year when they had a moderately successful first single. This album has Beyonce, for what it's worth ;)

Justin already passed 1 million sales. We are talking pure album sales. He's at 853,000.

The charts are not up yet: hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=298867Friday, December 11, 2015 CHART STORY: 25 βS HIGH-FIVEAdele Surpasses 5m Sold in Three Weeks; Coldplay Bows at #2 Queen Adeleβs reign continues, as 25 (XL/Columbia) remains atop the HITS Album Sales Chart with 660k and the Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart with 690k. Thatβs more than the rest of the Top 5 combined, and brings the album past the 5m mark in just three weeks. Parlophoneβs Coldplay scores the highest-charting debut, landing at #2 with 198k for A Head Full of Dreams. RCAβs a cappella wunders, Pentatonix, round out the Top 3 with 2014βs plus-platinum Thatβs Christmas to Me, which should be putting gifts under Nipper's tree throughout the season. Also note that their self-titled release, which arrived this past October, sells on at #14. Chris Stapletonβs Traveller (Mercury Nashville) continues to rise, moving to #8 after being honored with a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year, along with several nods in the country categories. As for the rest of the debuts, RCAβs G-Eazy (#4), Capitolβs Troye Sivan (#6) and Def Jamβs Rick Ross (#7) all land in the Top 15. Meanwhile, Justin Bieberβs Purpose has proven to be an absolute monster at SPS. The RBMG/Def Jam superstar continues to hold strong at #3 on the SPS chart with 144k thanks to streaming and single sales. In album sales alone, he stands tall at #5 with 72k in his fourth week out. Bieber fever is real. You have been warned. Outside the Top 15, J. Coleβwho released Dreamville mixtape Revenge of the Dreamers II (Interscope) in a sneak attack moveβlands at #23. If youβve been smoking too much Blue Dream and are unaware, Dreamville is the label that the acclaimed hip-hop artist founded a few years back. The set features a handful of the labelβs artists, but Cole is only featured on two of the nine tracks. Republicβs Kid Cudiβwho surprised fans by dropping the digital version of his Speedinβ Bullet to Heaven earlyβappears at #30. All music nerds should be aware that The Ties That Bind: The River Collection, a comprehensive look at Bruce Springsteenβs River era, bowed at #17. The deluxe package includes a four-CD set of 52 tracks with some unreleased material, as well as three DVDs with four hours of never-before-seen video and a coffee-table book of 200 rare or previously unseen photos and memorabilia. Close your mouth, buddy. Youβre drooling on your keyboard. Streeting this week are albums from RCAβs R. Kelly, Def Jamβs August Alsina and Arista Nashville/RCAβs Cam. And, of course, allegedly streeting soon is Rihannaβs ANTI. Stay tuned.

Great sales for Adele once again! Will trend upwards to the 800k-1 million range this week I think with her NBC special on Monday!

I know we could make up records as much as we want. But has an album ever sold over 500,000 copies 3 weeks in a row? I'm assuming yes.

Although pointing out every worthy moment is just adding to an ever growing stack but a 37% drop the week after Black Friday also seems crazy!

Did Coldplay really only get 3k TEA? That seems really low. But I guess keeping the album off of Spotify contributes.

Am I reading that right? Justin's overall sales are split evenly this week, 72k pure sales and almost 72k album equivalent units from streaming/sales? Wow!

Justin moved 31k units just from streaming on Spotify so I'm not surprised he doubled that in track sales.
Coldplay is up on Spotify this week, they'll get a SEA boost next week.

Great sales for Adele once again! Will trend upwards to the 800k-1 million range this week I think with her NBC special on Monday! You think the special will be that big? I'm surprised it is airing at 10 PM though, but it does air about the big Voice finale, so that should help. I remember reading a report from BB or maybe HDD how concert specials the last several years (Taylor, Madonna, GaGa, etc.) all did lackluster numbers.

Do we really have to wait until Monday for early Adele estimates? I'm curious what they are predicting for week 3 and if it includes the special boost or not.

Just because someone loves Adele does not mean they are going to watch a concert special at 10pm on a Monday. The DVR and later viewing numbers will probably be high and help her get a boost through out the week, but I'm not expecting her to break any massive records with this special. Of course, if I am wrong, everyone can quote this post again and call me out. I'll be waiting! I will have the special on my DVR as I will be watching the highly anticipated Fargo season finale that also starts at 10pm

It'll be after The Voice finale and you only have to look at what effect Adele had on SNL's viewing figures to see she can pull in a crowd. Adele is a much bigger name than Madonna, Gaga and Taylor. In fact she's the biggest artist in the world right now. I'm sure she'll do much better numbers than them.

The early numbers are in for ADELE - 11.25 MM and 3.0 in demo, making it highest rated concert on broadcast in a decade. TV numbers are up from last fall and spring - I suspect ADELE brought additionally viewers to TV. (Kind of like the significant pre-tune in that Rosewood gets in last 15 minutes before Empire starts).

I'm not negative, I'm just making discussion. Adele did nothing to me, I own all her CDs and will be getting tickets to her concerts next year.
The FINAL numbers are in. 3.0 demo and 11.27 million viewers. Very impressive for sure! I wonder how it would have done without the lead in of The Voice though. Maybe a 2.5 demo and 8-9 million which stil would probably be the best for a concert in quite some time. Didn't get a chance to watch yet, excited to see it!

You don't come off negative to me but it IS weird that you continue to underestimate Adele, against the general consensus, only to be proven wrong every single time. With the 3.3m+ opening week, 1.1m+ second week, better-than-Bieber drop in the 3rd week, record-breaking TV special, I think logic indicates that she is going to continue to impress and, compared to what you have in mind at least, over-perform. Again, you aren't railing against her with crass negativity but I have to wonder if there is something beyond 'being realistic' and 'making discussion' that is making you doubt her (and all of the other projections) time and time again.

We will never know how it would have done without the lead in of The Voice, and this "what if" scenario isn't doing anything to help your growing reputation of a negative nancy/constantly underestimating Adele. I would imagine it still would have done just fine. Adele is the BIGGEST star in music right now, period. Anything she puts her name on right now is going to sell and do at least moderately well. Think Taylor Swift on steroids, and you get half of Adele's selling power right now. Adele has shattered everyone's expectations and blown them away already. She will only continue to do so as time goes on, and the 25 era is already shaping up to be bigger than the 21 era was. Which is pretty damn huge. Your attempts to undermine, second guess or constantly underestimate her are seeming less and less logical, thought provoking and discussion raising and more and more whiny, negative and just all around silly.
