There's a very clear difference. Nick practically started from zero. Jonas Brothers were never big on radio, but by the time Nick released Jealous they were not big anywhere, the band was pretty much done, and their lattest efforts flopped big time. Zayn on the other hand came from the biggest boyband in the last decade, a boyband that still sells a lot. The hype was not remotely the same A boy band that only had like 3 radio hits in the US. 3 radio hits, yeah. But many more successful songs, 4 #1 albums (With their most recent one hitting #2), all of them going 2X Platinum/Platinum. (with the most recent one going Gold)

Well, that's exactly three more than the Jonas Brothers. And well, they had way more than three hits, they had three top 10 hits but a good bunch of top 20's. And my point was that they are still very popular right now, the Jonas Brothers popularity fade away years before Nick released his single

A boy band that only had like 3 radio hits in the US. Well, that's exactly three more than the Jonas Brothers. The Jonas Brothers had 3 moderate radio hits (S.O.S, When You Look Me In The Eyes and Burnin' Up) so lets not continue reaching.

Well, if we're counting moderate hits:
What Makes You Beautiful One Thing Live While We're Young Kiss You Little Things Best Song Ever Story of my Life Midnight Memories You & I Steal My Girl Night Changes Drag Me Down Perfect
12 hits, 4x as many as the Jonas Brothers.
Not to mention, bigger hits than the Jonas Brothers ever had.

Reaching is pretending the Jonas Brothers and One Direction had comparable success. But that's not even the reason why Nick Jonas and Zayn Malik are different stories when it comes to "On The Verge." No one knew or cared that Nick was planning to launch a solo career. Zayn's decision to go solo had intensive media coverage and hype. He's been on the cover of like three major publications leading up to his single's release, so he's already way passed "the verge."

He was counting as hits only OD top 10, Jonas Brothers didn't have any top 10 hit on radio (the hot 100 is another story) so by that logic they had no hits

Good for him. Hopefully it isn't TOO frontloaded and the single has some longevity. Radio and streaming look promising.

How one word can change an entire song:
"So we'll piss ON the neighborsβ¦"
Okay, off topic.
I did not expect this to hit #1 here in the States, at least not so soon. So nice job, Zayn. Very impressive. :)

Sooo...I guess this just debuted at No. 1.
I've heard a few times on the radio but I never really got into it.
I mean, it's not bad. Might take a few listens, but...
Just kinda one giant meh.
I have no doubt the radio stations are gonna put it on repeat hourly though.

I really like the "Fucking in, fighting on" line, not because of he says fuck (oh my pearls!) but because of how the words themselves sound together, or more specifically the vowels. It always just sticks out, too bad it won't on the radio version.
Anyway, I'd say this probably is actually better than every One Direction song. I wonder if the others have that ability? I'm sure they can once they're free from the 1D machine.
