Wow, I didn't expect her to take #1 on HCS, too. :o So impressive!

Also a fun fact, today is Kelsea Ballerini's birthday so I imagine Kelsea is having one of the best birthdays ever!

"Peter Pan" is the first single from a solo female artist to top Hot Country Songs since "Something in the Water" in January 2015. Impressive, indeed.

I kinda feel like this site has it out for Kelsea and other artists. Who cares?? It's not like she discounted it to nothing, nor was she the only artist to be running a .69 sale last week.

I agree that they probably have it out for Kelsea and other similar artists, but they do have a point here. Without the 'conveniently-timed' deliberate 69-cent sale this past week, "Peter Pan" would have probably fallen short of dethroning "H.O.L.Y." from the #1 spot on Hot Country Songs. And being #1 for the 3rd straight time and also #1 on HCS simultaneously is what Black River is claiming to be historic. Yes, Kelsea is the first solo female artist to send her first 3 singles to #1 on Country Airplay...that part is a fact. But the rest of it is just a bunch of spin. It's PR on the label's part, and I applaud sites like Saving Country Music for seeing through something like this (which wasn't hard to do) and calling it exactly what it is: it's just spin -- just PR on Black River's part -- in order to manipulate the public perception. I like "Peter Pan" a lot and I think it's a great pop-country song. I'm also very happy that it got to #1. But Black River spinning the situation as something historic is a bit over-the-top to me. I have a background in journalism and mass communication, and PR is a related field but I could never get into it (I did take a couple classes, though) because PR people basically just spin everything to make it look or sound better than it actually is, and that's something that never interested me (btw, I mean no disrespect to anyone who might have a career in public relations; I'm simply saying PR isn't for me).

Whether she's sitting at #1 on HCS because of a discount or not, it's still impressive. It's not like they forced people to buy the song, they only upped the incentive to do so (and it was already selling amazingly well anyway, and has been from the start -- something that can't be said for a lot of songs that hit the top these days or come close to it) and it paid off for them. Love that it hit the Top 40 on the Hot 100, too. What a perfect storm of great news this week for Kelsea & co.

Haha I'm in PR. (Sports PR so its very different) I agree there is spin, but that is our job in PR. Our job is to spin. I bet they had no resposibility on the discount, but the results are something spinable, so thats what they did. I don't see a problem with it. Regardless, it is a huge accomplishment. (Although let the record state, I would have preferred the push to be the first female artist to have her first three songs go to no.1 that she co-wrote.) This site just continues to be negative for most artists in my eyes. Country Music has evolved, and will continue to evolved and I don't think they respect that. But whatever. We can get back on subject. Just my 2 cents.

Saving Country Music dislikes any artist who isn't currently playing 25-seater honky tonk bars in tiny towns.
Commercial success = disgust
Note: I still read the site regularly. I enjoy the cynicism sometimes.

The debate rages on as now Country Perspective continues on (basically one of the commentors suggested "Peter Pan" is more of a "Fix" type hit than "Vice").
I will say the sophomore album era is crucial for Kelsea Ballerini her album sales as a whole are unimpressive and she is no Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood or Taylor Swift as she is probably still more or less unknown to people outside of the country genre (not even halfway to gold on her debut album).

I heard this months ago but didn't really go back to it. I love it now though. It takes me back to some of the country hits from 10 years ago.

I agree. By the time the fourth single, Yeah Boy runs its course, Kelsea Ballerini will be lucky to see The First Time's sales to be in the 250,000-300,000 range. It currently sits at #7 with 6000 sold and a grand total of 187,000 to date.

Kelsea Ballerini is also the reigning New Female Vocalist of the Year at the A.C.M.s. The only thing I see boosting sales of The First Time is if she were to win New Artist at the upcoming C.M.A.s.

Don't know if it has helped or hurt her, but anyone I know who doesn't listen to country music has basically referred to "Peter Pan" with "Lost Boy", the average music listener is half listening and if they heard one of these songs once and liked it, I could easily see them buying they other by accident. Now this is obviously a minor issue, but in a down time for music sales, any and all factors weigh in.

That's a solid sales number for a debut CD in this economy and in this male-dominated era of country music.

You're missing the point, which is that boost or no boost, her sales are literally fine. I don't understand why this has been something that has been brought up multiple times now, because she's selling on par or maybe even a bit better than a lot of newcomers, with artists like Sam Hunt and Chris Stapleton being exceptions.

I agree....my theory with any genre is, it is great to have one single do well, but what about the 2nd, the 3rd, the 4th? Well, Kelsea has proved herself with this album, but the 2nd album will be critical in my opinion. She is doing a club tour before the year is out, and that is smart marketing for her.
