I actually got super into New Jack Swing for a while because of this thread.
I knew a lot of the songs, but I was barely really aware of the concept. So I looked for every song that Wikipedia tagged under the subgenre and made a playlist with like 130 or so songs on it and I vibed out to that for about a week.
Thanks a ton Rose for putting me on to a neat subgenre.

When is the official due date? May do it. Technically the 15th (Sunday), but albie just asked if he could get his in on Monday, so you have at least that much time. I'm pretty flexible on this b/c of my own schedule and b/c I don't have a really high # of submissions rn (10, I think?) I'd love to get up to 20, but will probably settle for 15.

Will work on it over the weekend and send it by Monday. I didnβt know of the term New Jack Swing until Pulse by the way. Most of that type of music wasnβt heard in radios back home, except for what we called βbreakdanceβ Music back in the early 80s (ie Shannon, I feel for you, Rock it, etc). And Janet was only known for a couple of songs in the 1980s (the RN era didnβt have any impact except for Escapade), so Iβm quite interested in having a full NJS experience. I know most of the songs, but itβll be different to sort of listen to them in a genre exploration mode

Yay it's finally happening! I'll be starting the reveal for this on Friday evening! I'll also be doing a little 'preshow' leading up to the rankdown - every evening (from today to Thursday) I'll share a little music history about NJS. So ~technically~ this rankdown is closed, but if you are still interested and can get in a submission by early Friday morning, I'll accept it anyway. LMK if you a) do not wish to be tagged anymore or b) won't be able to participate, but wish to be tagged anyway.

Lesson #1: Contrafacting
In jazz education, a contrafact is a musical composition consisting of a new melody overlaid on a familiar harmonic structure. Contrafact can also be explained as the use of borrowed chord progressions. Before NJS, r&b was familiar with cover songs, but it was not known for using samples as much. Hip-hop, in contrast, was largely built on its use of flipping samples - taking a familiar beat and using it for a completely different purpose, sometimes even twisting the instrumental itself. NJS created a sudden collision of these two worlds by placing layered harmonies and distinct melodies over (at the time) unexpected samples. These NJS songs became such classics that they then became the samples used in subsequent r&b songs. 35 out of the 50 songs on this list use samples, and 42 of the songs have been sampled or covered at least once. In fact, several of the songs sampled other artists on the list. SWV even sampled themselves! Only three songs on this list neither used a sample nor got sampled/covered: - Real Love - Sensitivity - Treat Them Like They Want To Be Treated And only Treat Them Like They Want To Be Treated didn't get remixed (so no samples 'on the side,' so to speak). Over the years, hip-hop and now r&b (post-NJS) have gotten more than their fair share of criticism for its heavy reliance on sampling. These genres are accuse of being lazy, uninspired, and unoriginal; some even go so far as to declare the producers and writers are not 'real' musicians, b/c they don't know how to play instruments and rely on beat machines and computers. Well, I'd like to push back against all of that. Now, I am not saying that there are not some lazy, uninspired samples out there. I've certainly made a comment a time or two about urban music getting a bit carried away somewhat recently with all the '90s nostalgia. But the use of sampling itself is not the problem. Sampling, when done correctly, is essentially the modern form of jazz contrafacting. Ideally, when you use a sample you use it to come up with something new and not merely to get by with an already-formed arrangement and a cute but generic melody. Furthermore, looking at the roots of African music, you will find that percussion instruments were always our most prominent, and sheet music was all but nonexistent. I was in band and played piano, so I'm not trying to push back against 'formal' music theory or downplay the value of music generated by actual instruments and not a machine. Old-school r&b itself was built on pure instrumentation. But it should not be a surprise that at least one 'urban' genre would eventually form itself around a heavy focus on percussion, with no need for formal music theory, nor should it be frowned upon. It's in our genetic imprint to let the underlying rhythm dictate the mood, and to take a pre-existing motif and spin an entirely different riff off it. If anything, with the way technology and AI are advancing, hip-hop and NJS were ahead of the curve on this, the humanoids of the future will totally appreciate a beat machine lol. And for as much grief as people have given New Jack Swing for supposedly not aging well, the vast majority of songs I have chosen have aged extremely well, many holding up even better than most of the more recognized pop classics of the '80s and early '90s. Behind the spoiler cut is a list of all the samples used, and a small sample (pun not intended lol) of later songs that sampled each NJS song. It's all but impossible to rattle off every random tune that used a NJS song, so I tried to keep focus on the more familiar ones when possible there, but some of those songs are admittedly obscure. All credit goes to WhoSampled for making it possible to put this together. {Samples} β’ Keith Sweat - I Want Her β Samples: ORCH5, David Vorhaus β Sampled in: The Right Stuff, Vanessa Williams; I Wanna Know Your Way, Fred Hammond; Can He Do It (Like This, Can He Do It Like That), Ready For the World; Here We Go Again, Y'all, Heavy D & The Boyz

Only three songs on this list neither used a sample nor got sampled/covered: - Real Love - Sensitivity - Treat Them Like They Want To Be Treated Great start Cynthia! Meshell Ndegeocello did an excellent cover of Sensitivity in her most recent album Ventriloquism. The whole album is great with covers from Prince, TLC, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson and Sade among others.

And Iβm quite interested in your info posts. Iβve just read your post on sampling, contrafact, and wow, itβs a great read. Iβll comment on it later. Thanks!

Ah, I missed Tuesday's lesson (and for most time zones, Wednesday's too). But that's all right. I'll just post one right now and another later this evening. Lesson 2: The BookendsI noted in the OP that there are a couple of intentional omissions in this rankdown. This was mainly because I didn't want to have a rankdown with a predictable winner or predictable top 2, and even though most of the songs I picked were familiar hits, there was a good chance of that happening if I included either of them here. But make no mistake, these two played a huge role in New Jack Swing history - some argue that one is in fact the one who gave birth to it. The term NJS didn't exist until it came up in a 1987 Teddy Riley interview, so he is most often recognized as the creator of NJS. However, there is a strong argument that NJS really started in 1986, when Janet released Control. Control combined funk, syncopated percussion, and live instrumentation; it balanced layered vocals with clean melodic lines and little flourishes of melisma to simultaneously create complexity and simplicity. This melding of sounds was the premise of NJS as well, and Riley himself has said that he was partly influenced by Control, and Jam and Lewis' work in general. But Riley also took it to another level by throwing hip-hop into the mix too, at the time an unheard-of approach. Because of this, there is continuous debate as to whether Control is a 'real' NJS album, or if it is simply a precursor to NJS. The matter will probably never be settled. The odd thing about this is that Rhythm Nation 1814 is always recognized as NJS. But that album so obviously builds upon the direction of Control that I don't see how one could be debated and the other not. Either both albums are NJS, or neither of them are. I lean a bit toward saying neither; Janet was certainly NJS-adjacent, but she was really her own thing. She set trends, but rarely lingered around long enough to become one with them. Jam and Lewis did go on to produce other inarguably 'new jack swing' records (several in this rankdown). But Jam and Lewis were so strongly associated with The Minneapolis Sound, and Janet was so strongly identified with being a pop-r&b superstar, that their indisputable status as icons ironically leads to their collective role in the history of NJS being downplayed. This is in part b/c NJS itself is often downplayed, brushed off as a passing trend of the times. Legends are almost never associated with mere fads, even though the majority of music 'fads' come to pass because of the legends' influence.
Michael's time spent in NJS was much shorter, but no less notable and definitely less debatable - Dangerous is uniformly recognized as the highest-selling NJS album ever. Once MJ cashed in on NJS, it was kind of all downhill for the genre; what mountaintop is left after The King of Pop has taken you to Olympus? A few more late stragglers would come in behind him for the next two years, but for all intents and purposes Michael had provided the other NJS bookend to match Control; the genre had peaked. Much like his sis Janet, Michael is hardly associated at all with NJS now, for the same reason he isn't noted for being a disco king even though Off The Wall and pretty much all of the Jackson 5's 70s success was just that. MJ's own iconic status is too much to pin down to one sound or phase, and so it leads to no one recognizing the number of sounds he did take part in.

Didn't Jimmy "Jam" Harris and Terry Lewis also produce "Just Be Good To Me" by the S.O.S. Band?
Anyway, this is the timeline of how I've perceived the rise and fall of New Jack Swing...
1984-1986: New Jack Swing is born 1987-1989: New Jack Swing rapidly surges in popularity 1990-1992: New Jack Swing peaks in popularity 1993-1995: New Jack Swing slowly declines in popularity 1996-1998: New Jack Swing rapidly declines in popularity 1999-2001: New Jack Swing dies

smh I fell asleep while typing this post hours ago. This is the absolute last 'mass' tag I'll do before starting the reveal, congratulations to the people who are tired of their notifications being lit up! For those who did participate/still plan to send in a last-minute submission, I am running a little bit behind schedule (surprise) so I might end up kicking this off tomorrow. However, I'll try my best to get it started tonight. Lesson 3: The ArchitectsIn my last post I talked about the moderate debate regarding the originator(s) of NJS. But whatever the answer to that question may be, a foundation is pointless if you don't build a house on top of it. So in today's lesson, I will list the producers and writers for each song to spotlight the contributors to the NJS era. This is by no means a complete list - I don't have the time or patience to track down every producer or songwriter for every NJS song ever - but this rankdown is a pretty good representation of who had a major say in it, and includes the more notable one-offs. Things of note: - If the producers and writers for a song were one and the same, I credited them as 'producer/writer' instead of listing them on two separate lines. - When a group's name is listed in the credits, that means all the members of the group received a producer or songwriter credit for the song. - For the most part, I relied on Wikipedia, although it was occasionally necessary to find the credits on Spotify. I noticed that Spotify is an incomplete mess when it comes to listing credits for older songs properly, so if there was a conflict I gave deference to whatever was on Wiki (not too often that Wiki gets to be the superior source of anything, lol). - The songwriting credits given here do not include songwriters from samples. Nowadays it's pretty par for the course to list out all 87 songwriter names for the 15 samples you used, but I noticed that most of the credits for these songs didn't. Back then there didn't seem to be any pressure to do this, just listing the sampled songs was enough. This was largely a copy-and-paste job so I decided to stick with that method. - Strangely, Wiki only listed Pharrell as songwriter on Rump Shaker, even though Rump Shaker is commonly regarded as Pharrell's first production appearance. I put his name in the producer line anyway, but stuff like this is why I list the writers along with the producers; many writers contribute something beyond the lyrics. Unsurprisingly, Teddy Riley is head of the class with seven songs to his name here; Jam & Lewis tie Babyface & LA Reid for second. People with the most credits: Teddy Riley - 7 Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis - 4 Babyface and LA Reid - 4 Darryl Simmons - 3 (songwriter) Dallas Austin - 3 This is notable not only because of the heavy NJS influence, but because all of these men were such heavy influences in r&b (and pop), period. Not to mention Riley moving on to k-pop. Something else I thought was pretty cool - over half (28) of these songs were co-produced and/or co-written by the performer (or at least one member of the performing group). I'm always a wee bit dubious of 'vanity' credits these days but I think that wasn't really a thing back then. {Song credits} β’ Keith Sweat - I Want Her β Producers/writers: Keith Sweat, Teddy Riley
