@antigonerising please tag me in the reveals, heaven knows I tried to do this 😢 Will do! I had a feeling I would have to start tomorrow and sure enough**... so I don't know if it's possible for you at this point but you could still get in if you can finish it tonight/early tomorrow. **In theory I could start tonight, but I'm just now eating dinner and I know I'm gonna get lazy/itis in a minute and not feel like doing anything smh

I finally have the results calculated! We hit my 15-participants target right on the nose. Since it's late I will throw out some questions now to get things started, and reveal the bottom 5 tomorrow. 1. What song will be #1? 2. What song will be #50? 3. Which song will have the lowest standard deviation? 4. Which song will have the highest standard deviation? 5. Whose song will rank highest: New Edition, Bobby Brown, Bell Biv Devoe, Johnny Gill, or Ralph Tresvant? 6. Which girl group will rank highest? (En Vogue, Salt-N-Pepa, TLC, Jade, Brownstone, Xscape, or SWV) 7. Which producer will have the highest ranked song, Teddy Riley or Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis? 8. Which singer under the age of 18 (or group with an under-18 singer) will rank highest: The Boys, Tevin Campbell, Hi-Five, Another Bad Creation, Tracie Spencer, or Immature? 9. Will any rap song appear in the top 10? 10. Will any female artist land in the bottom 10?

1. What song will be #1? Poision or This Is How We Do It 2. What song will be #50? Hmm NO CLUE. Maybe Fun House? 3. Which song will have the lowest standard deviation? This Is How We Do It 4. Which song will have the highest standard deviation? Treat Them Like They Want to Be Treated 5. Whose song will rank highest: New Edition, Bobby Brown, Bell Biv Devoe, Johnny Gill, or Ralph Tresvant? BBD. Not my ranking, but I think BBD>BB>NE>JG>RT 6. Which girl group will rank highest? (En Vogue, Salt-N-Pepa, TLC, Jade, Brownstone, Xscape, or SWV) TLC 7. Which producer will have the highest ranked song, Teddy Riley or Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis? Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (w/ New Edition) 8. Which singer under the age of 18 (or group with an under-18 singer) will rank highest: The Boys, Tevin Campbell, Hi-Five, Another Bad Creation, Tracie Spencer, or Immature? Tevin 9. Will any rap song appear in the top 10? Yes, only Rump Shaker 10. Will any female artist land in the bottom 10? Maybe Michel'e, but I hope not!

Ugh, had every intention of submitting for this but then life happened. That being said, this rankdown has served it's intended purpose - it's served as a nice intro to the genre and introduced me to several new jams.

I so enjoyed learning more about New Jack Swing for this RD!!
I'll be paying attention to the write-ups for each song, as well. As an ignorant to this genre, I was a bit surprised at some songs that I knew and liked but thought were more of another genre, like This House (more like Cathy Dennis than Janet), Now That I Found Love (not necessarily techno, but closer to that 'dance' sound), If You Love Me (R&B?), and a couple others.
Regarding your first post, Cynthia, a few comments/questions on the sampling: - Sensitivity: if my ears don't confuse me, it also samples Human League's Human at the beginning, and at some point the beat seems oddly similar to George Michael's Freedom '90 - One of the songs (I don't recall right now) seemed to use the same sample as one in the last minute of the extended version of Technotronic's Get Up (Before the Night's Over) - En Vogue's Hold On has that same synth sound/chords of My Lovin' right? I thought that was a sample? maybe?
Interesting point about the Jacksons. I always associated Control as the same genre as RN, Paula, Pebbles, etc., etc. No difference! Whereas I found Dangerous less similar, building on it but mixing it with other stuff.
It'd be interesting to check how other popular artists may have done some NJS-influenced music. Like, to me, Madonna's original version of Keep It Together was sort of her attempt to do a Janet-like song. Was it also seen like that in the US?
Anyway. Very interested in this RD!!

Reveals starting un momento! - We will be seeing the 3rd, 4th, 8th, and 9th lowest standard deviations tonight. 8 of us will be chucking the deuces to our #50 songs, and only one person will be losing a top 10. - #49 and #50 are the only two songs to occupy the #50 spot at any time; they're also the only two songs that never left the bottom 10. - #50 could barely even get out of the bottom 5, peaking once at #43.

Just kidding of course my mother wants me to clip her toenails at this exact moment *groan* I'll be back in 30 Cut her toes off :sip2: I definitely contemplated it. And I have no idea why I said '30' b/c it always takes damn near an hour...you know what my mama probably doesn't want me shit talking her toes on the internet so moving on. Couple of things I meant to respond to earlier and didn't: Didn't Jimmy "Jam" Harris and Terry Lewis also produce "Just Be Good To Me" by the S.O.S. Band? Anyway, this is the timeline of how I've perceived the rise and fall of New Jack Swing... 1984-1986: New Jack Swing is born 1987-1989: New Jack Swing rapidly surges in popularity 1990-1992: New Jack Swing peaks in popularity 1993-1995: New Jack Swing slowly declines in popularity 1996-1998: New Jack Swing rapidly declines in popularity 1999-2001: New Jack Swing dies Oh yeah, I didn't mean to imply that they weren't already hitmakers when they first worked with Janet. Just pointing out that their later NJS productions sound much more overtly NJS than what they did with Janet on Control - that work still had a lot of Minneapolis Sound running through it. As for the timeline, my own definition of that is a bit narrower. I would say that 1986-1987 were the 'formative' years. Something different was cooking, but it hadn't quite reached a boiling point. End of 1987 was the official birth, and 1988-1993 were the active period. 1993-1995 was the waning phase - a lot of 'true' NJS songs, but also a lot of transitioning to the next phase of r&b. I think This Is How We Do It was the last bona fide NJS hit. Also, I'm kicking myself for not including Candy Rain. For some reason I thought that song was kind of debatable, but now I have no idea why. It was unmistakably NJS.. Like, to me, Madonna's original version of Keep It Together was sort of her attempt to do a Janet-like song. Was it also seen like that in the US? Anyway. Very interested in this RD!! On your first paragraph (certain songs having a dance sound to them), I don't necessarily disagree with that. NJS is tricky to define once you get into the '90s because other influences (including dance/house music) started seeping in. But since the hallmark of NJS is its fusion of different sounds, so that is to be expected. Madonna briefly tested the NJS waters with Erotica (specifically the title track and Bye Bye Baby) but of course her own pop and dance style was there with it. I don't think I've ever seen anyone mention they think of Madonna and NJS, I guess b/c it was not as overt an effort to use it. The melody and overall treatment of KIT is so unmistakably pop that the r&b-ish influence is kind of washed out, but it's definitely there. As far as I have seen Sensitivity didn't credit any samples but I totally hear what you're hearing - those opening harmonic chord progressions are pretty similar (but just simple enough to get away with it; progressions are not copyrightable). The Freedom '90 thing - are you thinking of Freedom's opening/the breakdown in Sensitivity's bridge? Get Up (Before the Night's Over) sampled Rob Base and JD E-Z Rock's It Takes Two (the opening "I wanna rock right now" line). It Takes Two has been used a lot in other songs. Hold On and My Lovin' are set in the same key and both sample James Brown's The Payback, so that's why they have a somewhat similar feel to them. At least those two did manage to sound different from each other though; You Don't Have To Worry and Lies are damn near the same song. Love EV, but their producers were kinda lazy on that first album.

My 50 may not be leaving for a while so this is a great start.
Note: I like everything above my bottom 10, and my 50 is the only song I actively dislike.

Are these images visible to you guys (specifically, the names at the bottom)? When I was making them they looked clear but now I'm thinking they're a bit hard to see. I might switch up the font color/style on later reveals.
No solo act got revealed in this bottom 5. I guess misery loves company lol.
Coming up tomorrow: the lowest standard deviation, three more #50s, another lone top 10 loss, and one really big surprise (or at least, it felt like a surprise to me).

Seeing the graphs on mobile and they work fine! Pretty chill! And no surprises with the reveals so far. I thought I was gonna rank Iesha much lower (I did hear that one on AT40 back at the time), but I ended up liking it a bit more than I should after listening to all songs

I HAVE A 30 SONG LIMIT! I'm sorry that I don't have the heart to rank such playground classics like Round and Round and I Like The Way (The Kissing Game). I literally got to the Top 20 and FROZE. I suffered a migraine you heathen!
