Album Track 2. Those I've Loved
Album: Carolina Songwriters: Eric Church, Brett Beavers An emotional song for people in his life. The guitar solo is stunning.

Album Track 1. Lightning
Album: Sinners Like Me Songwriters: Eric Church I have a longer comment in the Should Have Been Single rankdown but basically, this is top notch in every aspect regarding songwriting.

Yay my 3 songs all made the top 4 album tracks I could go on a giant tirade about how incredible of a song “Lightning” is. Would have been my #2 in this rankdown if it had been included. Those I’ve Loved and Without You Here (and Carolina but I forgot how good that one was until relistening to it now) are so much better than most of the singles from that album. They really screwed up the releases from that era other than Love Your Love, imo.

Before the revealing of Top 5 album tracks, I would like to spotlight castleoblivion26 's #1 because only his #1 didn't reach top 10 of this part of rankdown. ??. Over When It's Over
Album: Chief Songwriters: Eric Church, Luke Laird I like the dynamics between Eric and Joanna (female backing vocal) here, and it's the best Eric's album closer. This song is amazing and still remains one of my favorites from him, thank you for spotlighting it!

Who's ready for the Top 5 reveal? Upcoming song won a major game before. It has two #1, six Top 5 ranks and thirteen Top 10 ranks.

Record Year is the only song to win something. Not really. The game I am referring to is 2015 Tournament in country forum... 5. Talladega
We were laughing and living, drinking and wishing And thinking as that checked flag was waving Sure would like to stay in Talladega
Total: 271 Average: 11.29166667 SD: 7.601368107
Album: The Outsiders Songwriters: Eric Church, Luke Laird Hot 100 peak: 43 Hot Country songs peak: 2 Country Airplay peak: 1
Game History: 2015 Country Tournament Winner 2015 Country Rankdown - 9 Talladega has one of most contemporary country sounding chorus in Eric's career, but even though I am not too fond of that chorus, the guitar solo is well done as it captures some liveliness of NASCAR race, and the quiet closing is musical representation of "the past is all but a smoke'. But somehow at most of the times it wasn't even top 10...

4. Kill A Word
Cause you can't unhear, you can't unsay But if were up to me to change I'd turn "lies" and "hate" to "love" and "truth" If I could only kill a word
Total: 261 Average: 10.875 SD: 6.998835307
Album: Mr. Misunderstood Songwriters: Eric Church, Luke Dick, Jeff Hyde Hot 100 peak: 71 Hot Country songs peak: 9 Country Airplay peak: 6
Game History: 2016 Country - 34 2017 Country - 23 Kill A Word is excellent in the way that "the manner in which he eliminates these words is just as painful and ugly as what these words represent" (from Genius annotation). Of course there are some obvious wordplays there( I'd put "upset" down in its place/Lay "over" under six cold feet of dirt), But the most important aspect is its easy-going vibe. The matter is sad, but the melody sounds like a cheer-up song, which is exactly what Desperate Man tries to do as well--trying to sugarcoat stuffs so that they are easier to swallow. (that's why Brandy Clark's "serious" cover isn't as good as this version.) However there are no "boo-boo"s here so it is less annoying. Rhiannon Giddens, a black female Americana artist, is featured in this song and is a nice companion to Eric too. The inclusiveness is as bold as the message of the song.

I love both "Talladega" and "Kill a Word". The latter ended up burning a bit on me but I think I've had enough time away from it that I can listen to it without feeling the burn, which is a great thing because I love that one!

Obvious #3 at this point... 3. Two Pink Lines
One means none and we're home free Two means three and a diamond ring Yeah i wonder what fate is going to decide We're just sitting around waiting on two pink lines
Total: 259 Average: 10.79166667 SD: 6.756505185
Album: Sinners Like Me Songwriters: Eric Church, Victoria Shaw Hot Country Songs peak: 19
Game History: 2006 Country - 26 Two Pink Lines is Eric's career second single. Written with Victoria Shaw, this song portrayed a young couple waiting for the result of pregnancy test and the possible consequences of possible results. This is the best single of Sinners Like Me imo. The theme of the song clearly relates to album title, and the harmonica is too good to ignore. I also like the play on numbers in the lyrics. Besides the obvious " One means none" and " Two means three", " Yeah that's second hand just keeps slowing down/I swear it stopped twice the last time around" and to a lesser extent " Six weeks in, she was three weeks late" are also good correlations. The choruses don't repeat either to enhance the storytelling. It also did surprisingly good through rankdown process.

Should I continue at this point or reveal the winner tomorrow? Because it seems most participants aren't here and I don't really want a low-key finish for this winner...

Gosh I am so hoping that Record Year can somehow pull off this win but I know it’s extremely unlikely. Love Springsteen too, but it’s a little overrated in his catalog. I much prefer Record Year

I didn't realize there was so much love for "Two Pink Lines". I'm pleasantly surprised, even though I ranked it the lowest of anyone... whoops.

Funny how a melody sounds like a memory Like the soundtrack to a July Saturday night Springsteen
Total: 181 Average: 7.541666667 SD: 8.366492001
Album: Chief Songwriters: Eric Church, Jeff Hyde, Ryan Tyndell Hot 100 peak: 19 Hot Country Songs peak: 1
Rankdown history: CMA Song of the Year Nominees - 24 Springsteen is the third single from his third album Chief, telling a story of teenage romance. his is arguably his biggest hit in his career, selling almost 2.8M in US, reaching top 20 in Hot 100 and passing 100 million streams on Spotify. It is a pleasant song to listen to. The pianos make a breezy feeling. The gradual introduction of guitar is nice. The song kinda drags in the end though with these "woah"s, but the choice of female harmony there complements Eric's vocals well. But most importantly, Funny how a melody sounds like a memory is such a lyrical gold. Besides the literal meaning, here comes the simple yet accurate description of feeling nostalgic...! One of my all-time favorite lyrics because it is completely relatable!

1. Record Year
Yeah, you're out there now Doin' God knows how, and I'm stuck here Havin' a record year
Total: 129 Average: 5.375 SD: 4.7895947
Album: Mr. Misunderstood Songwriters: Eric Church, Jeff Hyde Hot 100 peak: 44 Hot Country songs peak: 2 Country Airplay peak: 1
Game history: 2016 Country Tournament Winner 2016 Country Rankdown - 7 CMA Song of the Year Nominees - 44 As seen from my username, Record Year is my most favorite song from Eric. This song is under 3 minutes and is so compact in terms of content. I don't know whether his claim of "no one ever wrote a song with the pun used in this song" is correct (probably not), but damn that's a marvelous pun that suits his character very much. There are some red herrings that made it sadder than it is: Slowly plannin' my survival, Dyin' slow in a livin' hell, I'm countin' on a needle to save me. That's why his twists and turns, especially from the title, are effective. Also this song has smoothest name drops ever. One bourbon, one scotch, one beer, Your good-and-gone keeps me up all night/Along with Songs In The Key of Life go in hand with the storyline in the song. As for the melody itself it is familiar but not too cliche. There are some comments that the opening notes resemble statics on vinyls and I buy it. And to put this much content under 3 minutes...just bravo!

Two Pink Lines doing so well amazes me. I love most everything he’s done, including TPL. Doesn’t Church not love this one?

I rememberee he saying he hates the first two singles from Carolina only. Thanks but that's not my username...It wouldn't be tagged.

"Record Year" is a deserved winner although I'm sad to see "Springsteen" miss out. Thanks for this recordyear, this was a great opportunity to rediscover Eric's music!

Oh thank god "Springsteen" didn't win. I don't hate it but it's so mediocre compared to most of his songs that I was dreading it winning. recordyear Thanks for hosting!

Once again, thanks y'all for the support! I find it harder than expected to host a rankdown, mainly because of assortment of ranks and graphics lol. And that concludes my first rankdown.

Well, if you struggled to host this, it didn't show! This presentation was masterful :) Thank you for all your hard work recordyear, and for doing such an amazing job! Very pleased with how this one turned out. My top 2 was the top 2 in reverse order, but I love them both pretty much equally. "Springsteen" is one of his few songs that is not overplayed for me. I didn't listen to radio much in the late '00s and early '10s, so I missed its entire chart run and never got to have it beaten into the ground by radio. I only know the song from the once or twice a month that I randomly hear it on the radio nowadays! And I think it is a perfect nostalgia song. I don't get any nostalgic for the time when it was on the radio, but I DO get nostalgia to when I was in high school. My first relationship is so eerily similar to this song!! I had a Jeep... We were both 17... It was both of our first relationships, so it was such an intense period of discovery for both of us... Literally the only problem is that we never listened to Springsteen's music in my Jeep, because she enjoyed my country taste Otherwise the song perfectly describes us, and how certain songs can still take me back to my old Jeep, and that especially formative time in my life "Record Year" was one of my favorite hits of the last couple years, and is one of those songs that I never get tired of no matter how many times I hear it! The arrangement is so cool, and the melody goes down so smooth and easy. My favorite part is that cool effect on the bass throughout the second verse. PERFECT winner!!!
