It was nearly impossible to score another hit for Randy after “Three Wooden Crosses” but I too loved “Pray For The Fish”. I didn’t care too much for it the first time I heard it but it grew on me immensely. Very good melody and creative idea for a song. Co-written by Ray Scott.

I’m just glad that “Pray For The Fish” got this far! It was definitely one of my favorite discoveries of this Rankdown!

Wow, and to think I voted for zaclord 🌈 for Best Christian Poster at the PMAs. I feel cheated. </3 I liked the idea behind the song, but did not care for the melody or instrumentation of this at all. Lyrically, it's not bad but I couldn't get through it. My #1 is very appropriate for me being a Jesus Jamz nominee though ;)

Next up we have "It's Just a Matter Of Time", the lead single from No Holdin' Back. The song was originally a 1959 blues hit by Brook Benton, but Sonny James (1970) and Glen Campbell (1986) had each previously released a country version as well, with James' version even reaching #1. Randy originally recorded this for a compilation album of 50's hits, but liked it so much he made it the lead single from his next album. This wound up as the 2nd most polarizing song of the rankdown, with two people losing a top 10 and five losing a top 15. On the flip side, there were three bottom 5 rankings, and .indulgecountry finally loses his last place song. This was a pretty big hit, but I've never cared for it. It's bluesy, but it's blues mixed with stringy 80's country instead of his usual neo-traditional. It's always felt out of place in his catalogue for me.

Finally! This was absolutely dreadful. Between the cheesy string arrangement, awful background vocals, and the plodding melody, this was an easy last place for me. I'm stunned that it wasn't out earlier than this.

Oh I loved this one! It was second favorite discovery from this rankdown. I really loved the bluesy feel to it, so now knowing the background to the song, it makes sense. Sad to see it gone earlier than I'd like, but glad to see I'm not alone in enjoying it!

Here is Brook Benton....recorded in 1959. Randy recorded this as it sounded in that time....and it is spot on.
We're getting a bit too close to my top 10 too soon....

No Place Like Home was the 4th and final single from Randy's first album, Storms Of Life. The song was written by Paul Overstreet. This is just solid stone cold country. With lots of rankings in the 20's and 30's this is fitting to kick off the top 25.

King Of The Road was released to promote the film Traveller, also serving as the final single from Full Circle. The song peaked at #51 (though it still gets quite a bit of airplay on Prime Country). This proved to be quite polarizing, as mamasaid loses a top 5, and two others lose a top 10. 5 rankings of 40 or worse ultimately kept this out of the top 20. This is a spot on rendition of Roger Miller's classic, but it doesn't really add anything and for that reason I've never really felt it was necessary as a single.

This Is Me was the third single off of the album by the same name, peaking at #5. I've always loved the opening to this song, the instrumentation is perfect. someguy loses a top 10, but a pair of low ranking kept this from challenging for the top 20.

Heroes And Friends was the second and final single from the album of the same name. It was the only song on the album that was not a duet (though the final chorus features backing vocals from the artists that appeared on the album). The video features footage of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, with Rogers himself making a cameo towards the end of the video. gardyfan and I both suffer our first top 5 loss, and I must say I'm surprised this did so poorly. This has long been one of my absolute favorite songs, I just love the chorus so much.

The final single to miss the top 20, "Too Gone Too Long" was the third single from Always & Forever in late 1987. This ended up being more polarizing than I thought it would, but I guess it makes some sense. On one hand, it was a pretty big hit in its day, but it does sound a bit dated now. I still think the simple arrangement works quite well, but it's undoubtedly a late 80's song, not as timeless as some of his biggest hits. Altogether, five top 15's are lost, with mamasaid losing a top 3.

And with that, we have our Top 20!!
"On the Other Hand" "1982" "Diggin' Up Bones" "Forever and Ever, Amen" "I Told You So" "Deeper Than the Holler" "Is It Still Over?" "Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart" "He Walked on Water" "Better Class of Losers" "If I Didn't Have You" "Look Heart, No Hands" "Before You Kill Us All" "Whisper My Name" "The Box" "Out of My Bones" "The Hole" "Spirit of a Boy, Wisdom of a Man" "A Man Ain't Made of Stone" "Three Wooden Crosses"
I may try and dive into the top 20 tomorrow, Wednesday at the latest. Up first at #20 is a song I thought would end up in the top 10, then at #19 someone finally loses a #1 ranking.

Very solid top 20 with “The Box” being the only song I wouldn’t have predicted making it. “It’s Just a Matter of Time” is one that I would’ve liked to have seen make it because I consider it be one of his signature hits and a song that only a country artist with a voice like Randy’s could pull off.
“No Place Like Home” was one of the harder songs for me to rank because it isn’t one that I come back around to revisit often as it’s a tad bit slow, but then again I forget how much I like the chorus and always find myself singing along with it.

Whisper My Name was the second single from This Is Me, hitting #1 in September 1994. This was his final #1 of the 90's; he wouldn't return to the summit for 8 years. I'm floored that this did so poorly, I thought it was nearly a lock for the top 10. It was a pretty big hit and one of Randy's last signature songs. I love the arrangement of this one and the vocals are just spot on. CoJoFan and someguy both lose a top 5, but on the flipside both George Strait Junkie and castleoblivion26 lose a bottom 10.

A Man Ain't Made Of Stone was the lead single and title track from Randy's 12th studio album. It failed to made the top 10, peaking at #16. We finally have a #1 fall, as gardyfan becomes the unlucky one. He's not alone though, as the song had three top 5 rankings. I was always mystified that such a good song only peaked at #16 - it was truly a sign that Randy's days at radio were numbered.

What in the holy grail is “Whisper My Name” doing out already?! This was a huge hit for Randy in 1994 and a song that I frequent back around to often. I’m surprised by some of the very low rankings for this and assume it won’t fare well in the 1994 rankdown either.
I wasn’t all that big of a fan of “A Man Ain’t Made of Stone” back during its initial release but it has grown on me quite a bit since then. I think I initially had this ranked a bit lower but the more I listened to it the higher I ended up placing it until it settled in my top 30.

"A Man Ain't Made of Stone" deserved better. I love that song a lot, and was probably the first Randy Travis song I ever actually liked so to see it at 19 is sad to me.

Oh great! NOW these reveals are becoming more painful. "Too Gone Too Long" and "Whisper My Name" deserved better! :'( What in the holy grail is “Whisper My Name” doing out already?! I’m surprised by some of the very low rankings for this and assume it won’t fare well in the 1994 rankdown either. Not if I have anything to do with it! Then again, that year was a goldmine for country music imo, so it's actually anybody's guess as to how Randy will do.

He Walked On Water was the third and final single from No Holdin' Back. Songwriter Allen Shamblin ("The House That Built Me", "Don't Laugh At Me") wrote the song about his great-grandfather, and it served as his breakthrough as a songwriter. Lots of rankings in the teens here, so this placement feels about right (even if I'm sad to see it go). It's such a beautiful sentiment, I've always been quite fond of it.

Is It Still Over? was the third single off of Old 8 x 10. It became Randy's 7th consecutive #1 hit. Quite a bit of disagreement on this one, as 5 people lose a top 10, including a pair of top 5's, but a couple of low rankings drug this down outside the top 15. Personally, I think this is one of the best fiddle tracks of all time. Not totally surprised this had a few detractors though.

The Box was the 4th and final single from This Is Me, peaking at #7. It was Randy's last top 10 for Warner Bros. I'm really pleased this song did so well. It's always felt underrated to me, as a song that didn't reach the top 5 I didn't know how well it would do. 6 people had this in their top 10 and only two had it outside the top 30. Such an understated, well written, well produced song.
