I wasn’t quite sure where to rank “On the Other Hand” because it’s such an iconic song and one that I’ve heard countless times over the years, but I’m ok seeing this leave at this point. It’s for sure deserving of a top 10 finish even if it fell just shy of mine. On a side note...this song was a discovery for some of you?!? I’m at a loss for words...like where have y’all been??? If there was a Country Music 101 beginners playlist this would be one of the songs everyone should know lol!

Well, considering that Randy Travis has not had a single song played on the radio besides "Forever and Ever, Amen", "Deeper Than The Holler", or "Three Wooden Crosses" for the entire duration of my lifetime, it's not like I ever had an opportunity to hear it on the radio!

lol @ OTOH being a discovery for some people! Mine were "A Man Ain't Made of Stone", "Stranger in My Mirror", "No Place Like Home" (strange, but radio doesn't play it much these days), and "A Little Left of Center".

I also haven't listened to the radio since like 2008 so I never discover older music unless it's in a Pulse rankdown

My station used to play a mix of new stuff and 80s and 90s when I was a kid/teenager in the early-to-mid 2000s, so I was lucky enough to hear tons of the old stuff.
“On The Other Hand” was re-released. It was one of the biggest examples of a re-release success. The label and writers were so distraught over it basically doing nothing its first go-around, they put all their eggs in the songs basket and tried it again at radio and luckily, it worked out. It helped that “1982” hit the top 10 before they released it again.

I Told You So was the 4th and final single off of Always & Forever, spending 2 weeks at #1 in the summer of '88. Randy wrote the song and first recorded it in 1983 while he was playing the club circuit around Nashville (before signing with Warner Bros). He re-recorded it for his second album. It was the only single of Randy's career that he wrote solo. Many know the song from Carrie Underwood's 2009 cover version (and the accompanying duet version) that peaked at #2, and snagged a Grammy for best country collaboration). A bit of a surprise to me that this is the first heavy hitter out, but it's not without its casualties as collinkottke loses his #1. All but 2 people had this in their top 15 and with good reason. It wound up missing the top 5 by just 10 points.

Diggin' Up Bones was the 3rd single from Storms Of Life, and Randy's second #1 single. The song was written by Paul Overstreet, Nat Stuckey, and Al Gore (not THAT Al Gore). Just missing out on the top 5 we find our 2nd lowest standard dev. Such a timeless chorus and an all around excellently written song. This was one of the songs that first hooked me on Randy's music as a little kid. Even if I couldn't find room for it in my top 10, I'm thrilled it made it this far.

Very solid Top 5 and I really have no idea how any of this is going to go and looking over my list I have my 1, 3, 4, 5, and 19 still remaining. I’m not very good at predictions but I’ll give it a whirl:
5. Deeper Than the Holler 4. Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart 3. Three Wooden Crosses 2. If I Didn’t Have You 1. Forever and Ever, Amen

I have my 1, 2, 3, 12 and 13 remaining, so I'm happy with the results for sure. I think my top 2 will likely be the top 2, but possibly in reverse order.

Very solid top 5! On the one hand most of his most overplayed singles are in here, but then again they are so well-loved for a reason! I really have no problems however this turns out, tbh.

Okay, I promise to finish this up either tomorrow or Tuesday evening (hopefully tomorrow if I don't have to work too late). So for now, here's the final pair of album cuts, including my #1. "The Reasons I Cheat" (tim)
Tim didn't rank his, but this was the first he listed. Originally from Storms Of Life, it was also included on Greatest Hits, Volume 1 despite not ever being a single. "Oscar The Angel" (me)
My #1 album cut and the only one I'd rank alongside his very best. It's a quirky story, but for some reason I've always loved it. That last verse gets me every time. Just for the record “Reasons I Cheat” isn’t quite my favorite album cut I had just put them in chronological order lol. That said this is a stone cold country tune.
I’m glad you included “Oscar the Angel” because I’ve always really liked that song. In fact the entire This Is Me album is just fantastic.

Hard Rock Bottom Of Your Heart was the second single from No Holdin' Back in 1990. The song spent 4 weeks at #1 on BB, the first song to do so since 1978's "Mama's Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys" (worth mentioning that the switch to BDS monitoring had began a few months earlier, and 5 songs in total would spend 4+ weeks at #1 in '90). It finished as the #2 song of 1990 on Billboard. Kicking off the top 5 we find one of Randy's biggest radio hits. Two #1's are eliminated and I lose my #2. Such a fantastic melody and well written song, very worthy of a top 5 placement here.

The song up next at #4 was a mild surprise to me, thought it might contend for the win.

Three Wooden Crosses was the lead single from Rise And Shine, his first fully supported radio single in 3 years. It became his first #1 since Whisper My Name in 1994. It won the award for "Song of the Year" at the 2003 CMA Awards. After finishing at #4 in the 2003 rankdown, I thought this had a legit shot at winning, but it actually was a lot closer to missing the top 5 than making the top 3. Still, 3 people lose their #1 and exactly half ranked this in the top 5. This is a great song, but frankly I think I've suffered a bit of fatigue from it. I probably under-ranked it slightly, but there are just so many of his older songs I love dearly.

Since it's already pretty late and no one seems to be around, I'll hold off on the top 3 until tomorrow evening. The top 3 ended up closer than I expected, and the battle for #1 was separated by just 5 points.

ROBBED. Easily his best song. But I'll settle for "Love Without End, Amen" "Forever and Ever, Amen" (oops had the wrong song) winning

If I Didn't Have You was the lead single from Randy's Greatest Hits, Volume 1 in 1992. It was written by Skip Ewing and Max Barnes. I gotta admit, I didn't expect this to make it so far, but I'm so thrilled it did (especially after it only finished at #30 in the '92 rankdown). This has long been my favorite song by Randy (and 2nd favorite song all-time). I can't think of a single song that gives me more joy to listen to. I was the only #1 ranker, but a full 10 people had it in the top 10 and no one had it outside the top 20.

Okay, who's ready to crown a winner??? Nooooo I'm not ready for this to end yet!!! I was really hoping to see "Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart" make it to the top 3 as it's long been my favorite Randy Travis song since I was a kid. I still hear it come on the radio from time to time and every time it always puts a big on my face! "Three Wooden Crosses" is one that moved around a bit inside my top 5 before I settled on a ranking for it, but I would've been just as happy to see it make the top 2. I'm thinking it's going to be "Forever and Ever, Amen" for the win with "Deeper Than the Holler" coming it second. Oh...I really do enjoy "If I Didn't Have You" but it's just a song that has worn out a bit on me due to being overplayed as I've heard it consistently ever since I started listening to country radio as a kid lol.

Forever And Ever, Amen was the lead single from Always & Forever, in 1987. It spent 3 weeks atop the Billboard charts, the only song to do so between 1980 and 1990. It cleaned up at the awards shows, winning Song of the Year at both the CMA's and ACM's, and winning Best Country Single at the Grammy's. The song was written by Don Schlitz and Paul Overstreet. And that means that... Deeper Than The Holler was the second single off of Old 8 x 10, reaching #1 in early 1989. It was written by the same pair of songwriters as #2, Don Schlitz and Paul Overstreet.

No one should be surprised that it came down to Randy's two most recognizable songs, but the order certainly surprised me. In the end consistency did it for "Deeper Than The Holler", with only 2 rankings outside the top 10. I'm guessing fatigue probably played a role in Forever And Ever, Amen coming up just short. I'll admit to a bit of that myself, even if it is an all-time classic. Congrats to CoJoFan for perfect rankings at #2 and #1. Deeper Than Holler winning this makes me very happy though, as it is really the song that made me fall in love with country music (and Randy's music) as a little kid. My grandma had a cassette tape of Old 8 x 10, and I used to wear it out on my Fisher Price cassette player and belt out this song (much to the annoyance of my family). And with that, we have finally reached the finish line. I want to thank everyone who participated, for my first rankdown this was quite fun. I especially loved hearing about everyone's discoveries. I think I took it for granted that people knew more than just his very biggest hits, but then again not everyone has been listening to his music since the age of 3!

Not me having the lowest rank for both songs! Glad that my 18 beat my 25 tho and that the predictable winner was avoided here: "Forever and Ever, Amen" is overrated and overplayed. Not a bad song at all, but far from his best imo, and I'm glad something else won.

The danceablity of "Forever & Ever, Amen" is what keeps it going...Channeling American Bandstand...."It's got a good beat and is easy to dance to"....and sent many many songs to #1
