Is It Still Over? was the third single off of Old 8 x 10. It became Randy's 7th consecutive #1 hit. Quite a bit of disagreement on this one, as 5 people lose a top 10, including a pair of top 5's, but a couple of low rankings drug this down outside the top 15. Personally, I think this is one of the best fiddle tracks of all time. Not totally surprised this had a few detractors though. Now we are going off the rails.....This song is fun...can't be miserable in your break-up while listening to this....

No more reveals until after Christmas, but here's the next to last batch of album cuts.
"Somewhere In My Broken Heart" (tim)
"What'll You Do About Me" (me)
Both of these songs went on to be released by other artists. Somewhere In My Broken Heart by its songwriter, Billy Dean in 1991, and What'll You Do About Me by Doug Supernaw in 1995.

I love "Somewhere In My Broken Heart"....this is a really great cover. It's a little over produced, but that may have been era related.

Ok, who's ready for some more reveals??? Hoping to make it to the top 10 tonight! This is where we start to get into some of Randy's all time classics so there's going to be some painful reveals along the way!

Look Heart, No Hands was the second single from Randy's Greatest Hits (the lone single from Vol. 2). It was Randy's final multi-week #1 single. We kick off the top 15 with 3 top 5 losses, as myself, sabre14, & CoJoFan all suffer our second top 5 loss. This song didn't perform as well as I had hoped in the 93 rankdown, and once again it falls short of my hopes. The first verse of this song is just perfect to me; melody, lyrics, vocals, production are all on point. Just hearing the opening bars can put me in a good mood. Wish this could've been part of the top 10, although we're starting to get into some rarefied air here.

Surprised to see myself as the lowest ranker for "Look Heart, No Hands". I did not like the song all that much when doing the 1993 Rankdown, but tbh I loved it quite a bit when doing this rankdown! I guess that newfound enjoyment didn't give it as much of a boost as I thought, on a list as overall strong as this one was

Before You Kill Us All was the lead single from This Is Me, released in early 1994. The video was directed by Peter Israelson (and is about as 90's as anything I've ever seen) Cody Wants Out... called it, and CoJoFan suffers back-to-back top 5 losses. This placement feels about right though, as over half of us ranked this between 11 and 18. This song was such a departure from Randy's usual fare, but I think that's helped it endure and really stand out among some of the bigger hits in his library.

I’m just happy to see “Look Heart, No Hands” land inside the top 15 as this has long been a favorite of mine. I really wanted to find room inside my top 5 for this but it was already stacked. I literally love everything about this song from beginning to end...it’s just sweet perfection to my ears and always makes me feel melancholy.

Spirit Of A Boy, Wisdom Of A Man was the 3rd single from You And You Alone. It peaked at #2 in January 1999. The song was first recorded by Mark Collie in 1995. castleoblivion26 loses his #1 and 3 others lose a top 5 as we bid farewell to Randy's last big hit of the 90's. This proved to be quite polarizing, which I can't say I'm totally surprised by. I know a few people who are completely rubbed the wrong way by the song, but I personally think it pays proper respect to weight of the situations. The fiddle just totally drives the song and has always made it a standout to me.

Just two more songs miss the top 10 - any guesses? I’m going to guess “1982” and “The Hole” are two songs that I think will miss the top 10.

Out Of My Bones was the lead single off of You And You Alone. It was Randy's first single on DreamWorks, and his first release not to be produced by Kyle Lehning (save for the singles on Wind In The Wire). A full 7 people lose a top 10 here, with George Strait Junkie losing a top 5. If not for two sub-40 rankings, this would've easily made the top 10. I've never considered this one of Randy's most memorable hits, but the steel guitar is just fantastic and that alone carried it to a top 15 for me. The vocal performance is pretty strong here too. (as a side note, #10,11,& 12 all ended up tied)

Better Class Of Losers was the 3rd single off of High Lonesome. The song was written by Randy and Alan Jackson and was nominated for a Grammy for Male Vocal. The song was featured in the film National Treasure 2: Book Of Secrets The last song to miss the top 10, and it seems fitting since all but 2 rankers had this song between #10 and #20. Such a fun song, glad to see almost everyone enjoyed this one.

And with that, we have reached the top 10!
"On the Other Hand" "1982" "Diggin' Up Bones" "Forever and Ever, Amen" "I Told You So" "Deeper Than the Holler" "Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart" "If I Didn't Have You" "The Hole" "Three Wooden Crosses"
Any surprises or predictions of what's to come? (To me, the only real surprise was "The Hole")

Great top 10. I too am surprised “The Hole” made it this far but I’m not complaining, I think it’s one of Randy’s most underrated singles and one of the first songs I remember hearing on the radio as a kid.

From the moment the piano plays the first couple of notes alongside the fiddle in "Spirit of a Boy, Wisdom of a Man" it always makes me take a step back and self-reflect. My favorite line from the song has always been this gem...
There's a constant contradiction, what feels good and what feels right. But, you live with decisions that you make in your life. And what steers your direction is hard to understand the spirit of a boy, or the wisdom of a man
I'm quite surprised to see "The Hole" make it to the top 10 as I never would've predicted that one making it. I guess it's one of Randy's more recent and therefore familiar songs that probably gets some recurrent airplay, but TBH I just don't think it's one of his all time greats and I would've liked to have something along the lines of "Whisper My Name" or "Better Class of Losers" make it instead.
Other than that this is a solid top 10 and it's very hard to predict in what order any of these classics are going to be eliminated.

1982 was the 2nd single from Storms Of Life, and served as Randy's breakthrough single, coming just short of the top 5. George Strait Junkie loses his #1, but that ranking did break the 3-way tie and push it into the top 10. The opening lines of this song are just so damn classic. Really glad this ended up making the top 10.

The Hole was the second single from You And You Alone, and peaked at #9 in late 1998. It was written by James Dean Hicks and Skip Ewing. The most surprising entrant in the top 10 lands at #9. Four people lose a top 5 (including bboat11's #1), and only 2 people had this in their bottom half. I always thought this song under-performed on the charts, and I'm glad it got so much love here. It really is an excellent, clever little song, and one of Randy's outright catchiest.

"1982" is very good, and even though it missed my top 10, I have no problem seeing it make the top 10 here! "The Hole" is a song that completely blew me away when I discovered it for one of the '90s year-end rankdowns, and I loved it just as much when revisiting it for this rankdown! I have always been a sucker for when male artists randomly utilize their lower range (especially when they have a lower range worth showing off!), and Randy does just that with this song As somebody who didn't know a lot of his songs before this rankdown, that was literally all it took to put this above the others... Lol! I'm sure I will come to love many of his others just as much with time, but for now, the catchy chorus paired with the awesome low parts is what totally sold me on this one.

On The Other Hand was Randy's debut single with Warner Bros. in 1985. After stalling out in the 60's initially, the song was re-released after "1982" established Randy as a hitmaker. It proved to be a genius move, as the re-release went to #1 and a star was born. The song was written by Don Schlitz and Paul Overstreet (same pair who would go on to write "Forever And Ever, Amen"), and was first recorded by Keith Whitley. Only one top 5 rank for this one, but zero ranks in the bottom half made this an easy top 10, but never really a threat for top 5. One of Randy's classic hits, and such a well-produced track.

Just time for 1 tonight, I should be able to finally get to the top 5 tomorrow. There was a decent size jump between #9 and #8, and there's nearly a 50 point jump between #8 and #7. So now it gets gonna get real.

"On The Other Hand" was also one of my favorite discoveries! I loved the word play, as I typically do whenever word play occurs. I wasn't expecting much when I started it, because I figured it might take a few hits for Randy to really come into his own (as most artists do), but then that one was incredible and I was like "Okay, I guess we're really gonna start hitting hard right from the beginning!" Definitely thrilled to see it in the top 10
