ARGH!!! How come so many of you placed Sam Outlaw in the bottom half??? Oh well, it is what it is. And while I enjoy all of his music, it is true that he is absolute eye candy ♥

Oh nice, a male artist purge finally!
I wanted to like "Tenderheart" more than I did just because Sam Outlaw is such a cutie, but I wasn't feeling it much.

I’m not quite sure when I discovered Robert Ellis but his self-titled album from 2016 is fantastic and “California” always stood out as one of my favorite tracks so I was thrilled when I saw it had been included in the rankdown. Robert actually lives here in Austin and I’ve seen him out and about a couple of times and of course I had to say hi lol. I’ve also seen him live twice and the last performance was when he was debuting all of the new songs for his most recent album Texas Piano Man.
I’m also a big fan of Sam Outlaw and often find myself reaching for his albums from time to time. I really enjoyed the album Tenderheart and if I had to pick a favorite song from it I think it would be “Say It to Me”. I’ve seen Sam live three times once being in Dallas and the other two times here in Austin…I also got to meet him after one of the shows and he’s got a quirky sense of humor for sure!
Being that I’m a big Sturgill Simpson fan I immediately had to check out Tyler Childer’s album Purgatory after I heard he produced it and overall I enjoyed most of the songs. While I like “Honky Tonk Flame” I prefer some of the other tracks from the album such as “Universal Sound”, “Feathered Indians”, “Lady May”, and “Whitehouse Road”. I missed his last show here in Austin but I did get to see Tyler open for the Turnpike Troubadours last year and he also came out to sing with John Prine at a live concert taping I went to.

As you can see tim and I only have one bottom 10 left. #20 will see one of us clears his bottom 10.

Solid alt-country that has slightly more rock edge and quite varied fiddles. Weird last place choice but congrats to tim for being first person to clear bottom 10! Also the pattern of these ranks lol Her second album, Wilderness, was released on June 28th.

Another person will lose his last place at #19, taking down somebody's #2 in the progress.

Yet another traditional country-ish tune that has good analogy of jack-of-all-trades of music. But I think he should log off from Twitter once in a while. Another weird #40 choice if you ask me. In fact the remaining two #40s are so random.

#18~16 are tied in points. The tie-breaker involves a #1 loss at #16 and two top 5 loss at #17.

Snap/click tracks are often regarded as obnoxious elements in mainstream country music, but I think it is used better here to clash with the more mellow steel guitar and vocal for more special nostalgia. Natalie has the most pleasant vocal among female mainstream country songwriters.

Strong words on circles of life. Would be top 10 if I ranked the lyrics only. The main problem is the melody feels a bit disjointed. The intro almost sounds like a less aggressive alt-country song (which is positive) and the instrumentals in the middle are quite good. However I don't like the melody of the chorus as it doesn't sound like a chorus at all.

The way the trumpets are used reminds me of Springsteen (by Eric Church) and a different take on "record" other than Record Year are quite good to me. And again I think he has pleasant vocals so his career has not launched yet is disappointing.

While I can see how putting “Aden” last place might seem random it was Jade’s voice that I don’t like nor do I like the rocky edge of the production. Looking back over my list all of the songs that I put in my bottom three were for the same reason (Lucie Silvas and Sarah Shook). I gave “Aden” another listen to see if I was missing something and I still wouldn’t put it any higher than last place lol. The lyrics to “Death & Life” really struck a chord with me and stopped me in my tracks. I love songs that you can close your eyes to where the lyrics take your mind on a journey that let your imagination paint the portrait of the song. Songs like this aren’t for everyone as I know plenty of people who don’t listen to music for the lyrics (my roommate included!) but I've always been one who listens closely to the lyrics. I probably overranked this a tad but I really enjoyed it. Wish “Cut Your Groove” had made the top 15 and what a gap that was! I’ve shared this before but I saw Charlie open for Brandy Clark here in Austin and after the show my friend and I hung around for a bit when all of a sudden Charlie sits next to us and orders a beer. We start chatting about how much he loves to visit Austin and about the struggles of the music business when before I know it we’re doing shots with one another lol. By this point my friend and I we’re a bit tipsy and I’m pretty sure we invited Brandy out to join us at the gay bars but she said she had to leave town for a songwriting session in Arkansas I think. Anyways, Charlie is a very humble person and quite the eye candy I have to say

Plus when I got to see him perform he's just so mesmerizing to watch, but I have a thing for men playing guitar lol My top 5 has one song left (my #1) so I'm not quite pleased at how this is going overall. Still got 4 bottom 10's. Things seem to be settling into the almost mainstream but not quite songs, no extremes.

I know plenty of people who don’t listen to music for the lyrics (my roommate included!) Thank you very much for saying this!! I rarely feel compelled to know what a song's lyrics are (other than searching for them because I want to sing along). People usually think less of me because of this, but I can guarantee that I enjoy the songs just as much as those paying attention to the lyrics. ps - Charlie is indeed eye candy lol

This is a bit late but “Mr. Jukebox” was the only song here I didn’t like, glad it’s out before the top 10
I’m also surprised at how well I’m doing so far, rankdowns like these are usually out of my comfort zone so it’s kinda cool that my taste mostly seems to align with all yours

Neko Case is certainly an interesting and mysterious person (probably an understatement). The switch between omnious electric drums and epic closer about returning to nature is one of best switch I have heard last year. Not surprised it is singingrulebritannia #1 after seeing his country rankdown.

#13 and #12 are ties. The highest ranker of #13 actually helped #12 to win the tie lol

George Strait Junkie and I have cleared our bottom 10 with this one. I won't disagree that the chorus sounds really good. The issue is his voice drags and I don't really like his kind of "dirt emo". It feels inauthentic.

I just don't understand why this can be anyone's #40 tbh. My top 3 are changeable and I am glad I avoided #1 loss but still...It (and the whole album) has one of the strongest arrangements this year, especially the slight piano interlude just before final chorus. It fires me up every time I heard that part. Also like the fearlessness in the lyric.

#13 and #12 are ties. The highest ranker of #13 actually helped #12 to win the tie lol And I can say the same for #11 and #10. The difference is both #11 and #10 involve #1 loss, showing how competitive this rankdown is.

Oh another song that I like the bridge most (guitar riffs). And I like how rough the electric guitar sounds here. Gave this song a more commanding feel.
