bboat11 yea this is likely our #1 song leaving just as the top 5 is getting started But lots of people like and dislike Sturgill Simpson! Hopefully it's him instead!

Major oof for this one. More people talk about the In Bloom cover but I think this is the cover they should be talking about. As polarizing his vocal it is, the burst in the final chorus just kills. Very emotional music imo.

What those people who placed this in the bottom 5... why? I mean, is it just ugly for you? Boring? Any idea into what brought you to rank this song so low would be appreciated.
And with Sturgill leaving, I only have one more song I like, so I hope that wins, even if I'm not crazy about it or anything :'(
I always suck at rankdowns.

#4 and #3 are tied in points and stayed at #2 in submission process for a while. I am happy and sad regarding #3 because it is just one position away from bboat11 's Revenge rankdown (but the points are far behind from #2 song in this rankdown).

Anyone that has followed me long enough on Pulse know that I am a huge Sturgill Simpson fan and have seen him live countless times (was at the first two shows on his A Sailor’s Guide to Earth tour here in Austin and also caught all but one of the last shows of the tour in California). I already knew that Sturgill was a polarizing artist on here and that many of you don’t like his vocals, therefore I wasn’t sure how far “The Promise” would make it but I’m glad to see it make the top 5 as I almost put the song as my #1 as well.

And with Sturgill leaving, I only have one more song I like, so I hope that wins, even if I'm not crazy about it or anything I always suck at rankdowns. It really is beautiful music on the surface, but as a song the vocal melody is a little bit repetitive and boring to me. Plus Sturgill doesn't enunciate very well, so I can't tell what he is saying half the time unless I listen to a line multiple times. Definitely something I could enjoy every once in awhile, but not every day or anything. I can assure you that my low ranking isn't due to flat-out dislike or anything! It is more a testament to how strong this list is, because I did like this song a bit and just couldn't put it any further up given how strong the list is!

I assume I would normally be a Simpson booster, but in this case I love the When In Rome original for such particular reasons that any cover will have a tough time proving its worth to me. Just kind of felt like an odd direction to take the song, and didn't nail its execution enough for me to fully buy into said direction.

Metaphor of a breaking relationship through weathers. The fiddle used in this song is so catchy and great steel guitar picks! Hope Evan Felker can overcome his demons. I said this song would settle at #2 before Kanenrá:ke sent the list and I jinxed it lol

A Long Way from Your Heart is hands down one of the best albums from 2017 and I was glad to see a song included from Turnpike Troubadours. I wanted to put “A Tornado Warning” higher on my list but it isn’t one of my go-to songs from that album as I prefer some of the other tracks like “The Housefire”, “Something to Hold On To”, and “Pay No Rent”. Still glad to see them represented well here and hopefully the lead singer Evan is able to resolve his personal demons that have currently led to the band taking a hiatus.

I don’t want to jinx myself but I think this is coming down to Lori McKenna vs. Jason Isbell

The album of the same name is underrated and I am truly surprised Rolling Stone did not campaign this album at all because they like almost every thing Eric Church did but apparently not his associated acts... Back to this song the main guitar riff becomes more and more catchy after each listen (and I may want to swap my position for this and Turnpike Troubadour's). The sounds between each verse can be treated as the shift between reality and imaginations. And I think his voice is strangely addictive. It is nasal (and maybe sounds gay?) for sure but it stands out in a good way when mixed with electronic productions. I am definitely interested in Jeff Hyde's career and hope he records more songs. This song also deserves a music video even if a basic one.

What a great final two! I’m still going to give the edge to Lori but seeing “24 Frames” win this rankdown would really seem appropriate

A more obvious common factor for both songs is they both come from Grammys winners. A less obvious common factor for both songs is they use second person narrative very effectively. The Tree is yet another album that is very emotional and moving. I love the sigh in the final chorus. It is the slight touch and makes country music most humane music.
But this song and Something More Than Free are more emotional than the previous song and The Tree. The scene is devastating yet it is all caused by himself. The second person narrative allows us to empathize with the narrator in reminiscing an old relationship.

I'm so happy that Jason Isbell can win a Rankdown. The lyrics of "24 Frames" are so beautiful.

What a great way to end the first of its kind rankdown featuring songs and artists from within the Americana, Folk, and Red Dirt genres. Hopefully this is the first of many because I really think there’s quite a few of us that have branched out and away from mainstream country music. Thanks again for hosting this recordyear it was a lot of fun and I discovered some great songs along the way!

Thank you for participating in this rankdown which probably has a lot of unfamiliar songs for most people. The songs got shifted around a lot during submission process which is quite fun to watch. Of course I don't want you to forget these songs in 24 frames, and I hope you will love country music as a encompassing umbrella in the future.

What a disappointing top 2. (it goes without saying it's just me) But I loved this rankdown, I knew many songs, but I got to know others and well, even the ones I didn't like from new artists to me, added one more number to my last.fm number of listened artists lol So it's all good. I think the most surprising thing here, was that the perfect song Hardwood Floors didn't even make it to the top 10! The song was made to be loved lol
Thanks recordyear for hosting, I had a lot of fun ♥
