So much for one quick reveal... The corrected rankings find the first album cut bowing out at #38, "Double Shot Of John Wayne". Not a ton of passion either way for this one, but the lack of top 20 rankings ultimately pushed it down into the bottom 3. I've always really liked the song, and thought it would've been the most radio-friendly follow up to "She Won't Be Lonely Now". That ranking pushes "Change" up one spot to #37. Rounding out the bottom 5 we have "Right Now", Clay's first indie release that was included on Long Live The Cowboy. Clay released this shortly after parting ways with Curb, but with no label behind it, it failed to gain traction at radio. taylor becomes the first to lose a top 10. This pushes "Say No More" out of the bottom 5 and into the 35th spot. Back tomorrow (hopefully) with more reveals, including one of the most polarizing songs of the rankdown which finds someone losing their #1!

"Double Shot of John Wayne" is one of my favorite album cuts from SWBLL. Sad to see it go out quite this early, though his hits catalog from the 90s is incredibly strong so I'm not surprised.

At #34 we find the 4th and final single from Live, Laugh, Love, "Once In A Lifetime". The song became the first single of Clay's career to miss the top 40. Clay has been quoted as saying he thinks this song was his finest vocal performance. First bit of chaos we've had in this rankdown, as we lose our first two top 10's, with taylor losing her #1! On the other end of the spectrum, ClevelandRox loses his last place song. I do like the vocal arrangement on this one, but the production really holds it back. Never really understood why this bombed at radio though, especially coming off of one of Clay's biggest hits ("Chain Of Love").

Oh thank goodness “Once In a Lifetime Love” is finally out as it is easily my second least favorite song Clay has ever released. I’m not quite sure what they were going for with this one but it just doesn’t work for me and I actually find the song to be rather dreary and well just boring.

I figured this would be out at some point before the Top 10 but damn! I'm at this song being criminally overhated! Y'all must not have had a once in a lifetime love yet

#33 finds our first loss from the 90's, "Bury The Shovel". The song was the 4th and final single from Hypnotize The Moon and was Clay's lowest peaking single to date at the time.
Most seemed to have this one between 20 and 30, but 3 bottom 5's drag it down into the bottom 10. I don't have much to say about this one, it's really the only 90's song of Clay's that I never revisit.

Bury the Shovel was a fun song I didn't remember.
But what is he going to bury the shovel with, now that he's without a shovel? 🤔

Winning a tiebreaker at #32 is "One, Two, I Love You". It was the 2nd single from Rumor Has It, peaking at #18. I expected this one to be somewhat polarizing, but I was hoping it could at least escape the bottom 10. But alas, with 2 #39 ranks and 2 last place ranks, it wasn't to be. Four of us did have it in our top 20, with ClevelandRox losing a near top 10. I don't love this quite as much as I did back in the day (as a kid this was one of my very favorite songs), but I still enjoy it.

Rounding out the bottom 10 we find "Jesus Was A Country Boy". It was the 3rd and final single from Clay's lone album for RCA, A Few Questions. Back-to-back polarizing singles, though no one loses a #40 this time. George Strait Junkie loses a top 5, but 6 rankings of 35 or worse secured a spot in the bottom 10. This is a tough one for me. On one hand, the production is spot on, but the lyrics have never worked for me. It just seems kind of ham-handed (and I'm not particularly religious to begin with).

I've always loved One Two, I Love You and was pissed when it wasn't on his Greatest Hits. (However Sara Evans will forever hold the record for worst travesty of a song not on her Greatest Hits- Backseat of a Greyhound Bus > ) I usually despise any somewhat religious songs but Jesus was a Country Boy handled it perfectly and is just so pleasant. Definitely puts a smile on my face.

Escaping the bottom 10 by a mere 1 point, we find the 3rd single from Fall, "She Likes It In The Morning".
Lots of agreement on this one, as most ranks fell in the 20's or early 30's. This actually did a bit better than I expected considering it didn't make much of a dent at radio, but I'm not upset about it. It's a really sweet, well executed song, that may have just been a tad too slow for late '00's radio.

Coming in at #29, we find the first single from Clay's Greatest Hits album, "Ordinary People". Coming on the heels of one of Clay's biggest hits (Then What?), it was never able to gain traction at radio and became Clay's first single to miss the top 20. Opinion was much more divided on this song, as 7 of the 13 had this in the bottom 10, but 5 ranked it 21st or higher, with someguy nearly losing a top 10. Maybe it's because I used to wear out Clay's Greatest Hits cd when I was younger, but I've always loved this one and found it quite memorable. Glad it at least escaped the bottom 10.

Coming in at #28 we find "Workin' On Me", the second single from Clay's most recent album. Not surprised to see this perform the best of the Long Live The Cowboy singles. The more modern production is the only thing that holds it back for me, otherwise it's a pretty good song. bboat11 loses a top 10 here, while sabre14 finally loses his last place ranking.

Next up is an album track from Live, Laugh, Love, "Holding Her And Loving You". A live version of the song charted in 1998. The song is a cover of Earl Thomas Conley's 1983 chart-topper.
This one did better than I expected, but it is a pretty strong cover. I've often wondered why they didn't release it as a single (especially in place of "Once In A Lifetime Love").

I wasn't familiar with Holding Her and Loving You being a cover, but it sounded a lot like The Cowboy In Me from the same year in the verses. I could see that being why it wasn't a single? I really liked it though and agree, it should've been a single!

Just shy of the top 25, we find "The Melrose Avenue Cinema Two", an album cut from If I Could Make A Living. Had no idea how this would do as an album cut, but thrilled to see it had a good amount of support. .indulgecountry loses a top 10 here, and only 3 people had this in their bottom 10. Probably my favorite album cut of Clay's, the melody is just so catchy and I like the story in the lyrics as well.

I meant to swing back around to this and comment on a few songs, but with traveling and the holidays I kept forgetting to do so. Anyways, let’s get caught up!
“One, Two, I Love You” is a song I’ve always adored but knew going into this that it wasn’t likely to do well especially considering it barely sneaked into the Top 20 way back in 1997 (has it really been that long already?!).
Aside from the obvious double-entendre in the song title “She Likes It In the Morning”, this is actually beautifully written and I all to often forget how gorgeous it is.
“Workin’ On Me” really grew on me the more I listened to it and I need to make sure to come back around and revisit this one again. This is easily the best single released from Long Live the Cowboy so I’m happy to see it come out ahead of the others here.
Clay’s cover of “Holding Her and Loving You” is pretty good, but as a longtime fan of the original nothing really comes close to the magic that Earl Thomas Conley’s voice brings to songs such as this one. He really is such an underrated artist overall and I was really sad to hear about his passing earlier this year.
