Taylor is the top female celebrity of the year.
SZA is the female musician that had the biggest jump this year.
Jenna Ortega is the breakthrough IT Girl of the year.

If 'River' hadn't been a flash in the pan then maybe Miley could've entered the conversation, but no. 'Flowers' is the only full-on success story Miley's had this year because the album's performance has lagged and the two follow-ups have suffered as a consequence of the lead single's continued dominance.

Lily-Rose Depp or Blackpink's Lisa I'd say
If we're talking about the biggest female musical artist then yeah it's Taylor

Taylor was it girl in 2012-2015 maybe, it just feels weird to call her like that after 17 massive years in the music industry. That’s just my view, I think she’s much more than “it girl” in 2023.
My answer is SZA, easily, and I hope RAYE will be soon too. If we talk OVERALL, than it’s Zendaya.

The biggest female music act is Taylor, but I never think that quite captures the "It girl" vibe, which is more about a brand-new star or a new-ish star catapulting to a level of fame that changes the status of their career.
So yeah, I'd say SZA pretty easily.

Is it wrong that I kind of feel like there isn't one yet?
My sole hangup with handing it over to SZA is that I am one of those people who tends to think "it girl" is reserved for new/breakthrough stars, and SZA already had her huge breakthrough with CTRL. That album is 3x platinum, hasn't left the BB200 since it was released, and is the entire reason so much anticipation was there for the follow-up - and that anticipation kind of speaks for itself seeing as she made her fans wait 5 1/2 years for it. So SOS just feels like SZA finally picking up where she left off. With that said I suppose I could see the argument that CTRL-to-SOS is kind of like her Thankful-to-Breakaway moment, and if anyone is the It Girl of the 2023 season thus far it would be her.
I'd make an exception for Miley (I think "comeback" artists can be it girls, albeit somewhat differently from someone entirely new to the scene) but she hasn't sustained the huge buzz that was around her and Flowers in January-February.
Taylor has definitely been around far too long to call an 'it girl,' she is just in legacy building beast mode. Very cool to witness it unfold in real time, though.
No other female artist is really doing anything big/sustained enough for me to discuss right now.

I would also say SZA. She is not new but if you think about this as a "Most Improved Artist" award she deserves it by far. In fact I can't think about another serious contender. Karol G?

I agree with those who view the It Girl of the year someone who is either a breakout artist or still fairly new to the industry that just recently saw her popularity skyrocket as not just a top star, but trend setter too. Taylor now is at the exact same point in her career as Madonna was in the 90s. Though Madonna could still crank out # 1 hits in the 90s, it was probably more so because of her legacy and huge following. I don't think anyone called her the It Girl at any point in the 90s because she just got done being the It Girl for a good portion of the 80s. I guess the difference was though, that there were many new stars breaking into the mainstream back then. There seems to be a major lack of new breakout artists building new legacies now, so people are falling back on stars like Taylor and Miley who have been It Girls in the past already. I guess it just shows how slow pop radio and the Top 40 charts are nowadays as compared to years before.

It's hard to argue there is one since everyone that has potential is currently living in the shadow of Taylor Swift.

Based on my post above defining the It Girl as a recent breakout star who became a trend setter, I thought I might try to compile a list of who the It Girl was each year since the 90s.
1990: Mariah Carey 1991: Mariah Carey 1992: Celine Dion 1993: Whitney Houston 1994: Sheryl Crow 1995: Alanis Morissette 1996: Gwen Stefani 1997: Jewel 1998: Natalie Imbruglia 1999: Britney Spears
2000: Britney Spears 2001: Pink 2002: Avril Lavigne 2003: Beyonce or Christina Aguilera 2004: Jessica Simpson or Ashlee Simpson 2005: Kelly Clarkson 2006: Nelly Furtado 2007: Fergie 2008: Miley Cyrus 2009: Lady Gaga
2010: Ke$ha 2011: Katy Perry 2012: Rihanna 2013: Taylor Swift 2014: Iggy Azalea 2015: Taylor Swift 2016: Ariana Grande 2017: Alessia Cara 2018: Dua Lipa 2019: Halsey
2020: Billie Eilish 2021: Olivia Rodrigo 2022: Doja Cat 2023: ? - Probably still too soon to tell. Maybe we'll know after Summer though.
