I'll listen to it of course, but after the disappointment of Subtract, I'm not nearly as excited for it. As he says, he has "zero expectations for it," so it probably won't do anything on the charts.

Love the fact that he is putting out stuff that is important to him and not just brazenly chasing hits. He will always rake in the big bucks as a touring artist, so he can do what he wants when it comes to his music. Subtract, as I suspected, was a grower and it definitely grew on me, especially melodically. Lots of pretty stuff on there. I'm excited!

I'm not expecting much for this album since his last two albums have been a decline in quality. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong.

I had a feeling he was moving on quickly since - still hasn't gotten a second single. (Well, third if you count Boat.) I do wish Stoned would have been one if only so it could have been a part of his singles discography. It's gone on to become one of my all time favorites from him.

Stoned is a career highlight and I can’t believe it was a bonus track. Best song on the record. I’m always excited for new Ed and will definitely check this out.

Yessss for the Stoned love. I can relate so hard to the lyrics. It's my anthem.

Plastic Bag is so sad. :( I ordered the vinyl from Amazon and had enough points to only pay about $8 for it. Excited to hear more from Ed. Subtract continues to open up with each listen.

I am excited for this. I wish he was still getting the mainstream success, but it seems he "doesn't" want it. I mean, I guess I have to believe that because he is still able to make hits if he truly wanted them by surrounding himself with the right people. He already has an incredible career, one of the best in music history with massive hit singles, some of the biggest tours, one of the biggest streaming artists in history, etc.
I'm wondering if there will be something on the album that radio will surprisingly latch on to for the fall season. As far as I can tell, he isn't going to promote anything from this right? Theres no single or video or anything, but that doesn't have to stop radio sending something (Hopefully)

As far as I can tell, he isn't going to promote anything from this right? Theres no single or video or anything, but that doesn't have to stop radio sending something (Hopefully) In an e-mail I just got announcing its release (I already pre-ordered it) it doesn't sound like he intends to promote it much, at least in that sense: "There's no singles, no videos, it's on my own label, so no pressure for anything. I just want you guys to have a soundtrack for autumn/fall that feels like a warm hug." So don't expect any radio hits (Subtract also wasn't aimed at radio, though it at least squeezed out a hit in "Eyes Closed".) Which doesn't preclude some from playing it anyway or something breaking out from streaming or whatever. Which is fine; certainly won't complain about a warm hug from Ed. But I do hope that he doesn't wait too long before returning to more commercial, or at least broadly appealing, material.

The album is good at first listen. I'm glad he's keeping us fed musically.

Let's go, tempo!! This is better than Subtract, if for nothing more than the fact that there is more variation here and the production gets mildly experimental at times. I actually think the production is on par with Folklore and better than Evermore, for recent Aaron Dessner productions, other than Subtract. But, yeah, this is a strong album and perfect for autumn.

Was eyes closed the only single released from his last album?

One listen through and definitely a better first impression than the last album (which I think I could have gotten into more if I had kept listening to it) and the one before (which I didn’t like much at all). There’s also more tempo than I expected given the rollout, even some potential hits if hits could be made without a viral element to them. I’ll be going back to this one. Possibly his best since Divide, or possibly even Multiply I’d say.

I know Sheerios slander Equals but that album had BOPS (Bad Habits, Shivers, Be Here Now, Stop The Rain) and some really pretty, albeit Ed-on-autopilot songs (First Times, Love In Slow Motion, Visiting Hours). The only song I don't really like is 2Step and it's still listenable. I enjoy Subtract, but so far, it's his weakest effort.

I was thinking and I think Ed would have gotten a bigger push had he just released this album without any notice, or did the day-before announcement. His announcement a month in advance was still a surprise but the buzz didn't last so it didn't really benefit him whereas had he released it within 24 hours of the announcement, he could have capitalized a bit more on that. Of course, the music would need to be liked and people seem to be in their lane as to whether they like him or not, but at least those who did would have all been talking at once.
