I can't see TikTok making this viral as there's nothing about it worth making a video too. I know he can make amazing music, let's hope he has some of that up his sleeve. For anyone who hasn't this gem:

Prob? Top 10 ? It was going to easily clear top 5 with very high odds at top 2 lol and with the controversial video will be a challenger for #1 You made an against the grain guess and were correct - congrats. There was no reason to assume that this would under-perform how it did. It was much more likely to be a huge hit based off his previous work but that is not always the case. So congrats? Lol Nothing to be impressed over though. Let's see how the life of the track plays out, anything is still possible with the right promotion and if something somehow goes viral. We will see.

Certainly nothing’s impossible, but I think if there was any prospect of TikTok saving this release, the song would have needed to generate even a spark of public interest at launch. Perhaps I’m forgetting an obvious example, but I’m hard-pressed to name an instance in which TT turned around a new single that the public rejected this decisively and quickly. That video didn’t look cheap, either…Columbia can’t be happy.
Someone mentioned “Rumors” — at least that song debuted in the Top 5 of the H100. I’m not even sure that this is an “Attention” (and it’s certainly not as good as that song was).

Lol that video looks simultaneously cheap as shit and like it cost a hot dollar. There's nothing here that he hasn't already done, and very recently. The song is also very mid. Yawn.

I think this song underperforming is proof people are tired of his gimmick.

Wow this wildly underperforming, very easily looking to be the next Bongos if this don't get any better. Bongos is a smash hit in comparison to this. A closer equivalent is the lead single of Nelly Furtado's follow-up to Loose missing the Hot 100.

I think the comparisons to Gaga and Madonna are out of pocket both because Lil Nas is a rapper, and also because he doesn't have enough good will either of those other artists had from their outset with their core formats. Gaga had established herself with 6 number one consecutive CHR hits off the Fame and the Fame Monster, so she was always going to open better because she established herself as a staple in her first 2 years of debuting. It would be more realistic to see Lil Nas more like a Nelly or a Fergie circa 2006 or a Lorde in 2013.
Lil Nas X has 5 top 10 hits, that's about one hit per year since his breakthrough with Old Town Road. Either way his chart success has averaged to about one hit per year not unlike a Shawn Mendes or a Jason Derulo, who I would say are also in a similar position to him.
I would say the reason he's struggling now is that there's no momentum to his projects. He spent all the good will from Old Town road on the Montero singles, and there's nothing left at this point. He had attention from Old Town Road, boosted the profile of the Montero singles based on controversy, and now there's nothing left.

It’s odd to see so many hoping for his downfall as if he did something worthy of being cancelled. Yeah, he’s gimmicky but as a young gay growing up in a time when trolling behaviour is praised, he used it to his advantage. This is the first time it hasn’t benefitted him from the getgo and suddenly he’s pop’s biggest enemy. Regardless of how derivative this song and roll-out has been, he’s still one of the most refreshing acts to emerge in recent years and having accomplished so much as an outgoing outspoken queer rapper is incredible.

Not that interesting as a full song, feels like a retread too. The video is better than the song but it also feels boring.

I want to root for him but this is more of the same s*** we've come to expect from him. He's putting too many eggs in the TikTok basket and that's a fickle audience to cater to. He should focus more on creating a song that's actually good than trying to create a viral moment every time.

You know what, I usually love his trollish behavior. But I have to admit, the indifference that this has been met with is refreshing. I love that people aren't so easily triggered and nobody cares. I hope Sam Smith is taking notes, because nobody is gonna fall for their shit either.

I think this would have been doing better if not for the title, too. I mean, I can’t really see a radio DJ saying “here’s the new Lil Nas X single . . .“ or even people actively searching the song because it’s just “too” gimmicky. Especially without more umph to the song.

I'm consistently a purist musically I don't care if you're trolling or boring just do it interesting or uniquely which he did at first but now it's becoming redundant, lazy and not interesting and when the music also is subpar I don't want him cancelled I just want the results to match the output

honestly i think the biggest issue with this one is that it's controversy-bait and trollish for the sake of it.
Call Me By Your Name, while it have a similar controversy-bait rollout, at it's core is a genuine, personal song from a gay man talking about gay love. hell, even the music video genuinely have some relevant imageries that related to the song's topic if one wants to look beyond just the initial ragebait elements.
This is one is just... nothing. It's a generic hip hop flexing with like two lines about being back like Jesus and unlike Industry Baby it doesn't quite ooze the energy and charisma like that one did.
it's like basically they looked at Call Me By Your Name and Industry Baby's success and took the wrong lesson from both.
i really hope that he have something better up next because i know he can do much better. his previous album had some of my favorite songs from that year and i'll be happy to chalk this one up as a failure to quickly move on from if whatever he gets out next is up to par.

As someone who misses the days when our hitmakers (not named Taylor Swift) commanded cultural conversation and had actual personalities, I'd certainly love for LNX to succeed. If this song had any substance to it, he probably would have gotten away with the blatant attention-seeking tactics. LNX is encountering the same reality that many of his predecessors encountered (Gaga, Eminem, Miley...perhaps Kanye, although he clearly never internalized the lesson), which is that pure schtick and shock value will ultimately only take you as far as the underlying music does. It will be interesting to see whether LNX has a Chromatica or Plastic Hearts in him.

Judas debuted inside top 10 on the Hot 100. Stop trying to put Nas on Gaga's level.

Judas debuted inside top 10 on the Hot 100. Syop trying to put Nas on Gaga's level. And I'm also pretty sure that wasn't with a full week either. I remember being pissed because she was making weird decisions that affected the success of the music lol. Reminded me of when Christina had a really long cd that was sold for a double cd price in most places, but was like, 5 minutes short of actually qualifying for the double certification. Like, why not just allow yourself to have the full week and/or add an extra 5 minutes to your already massive cd? ANYWAY. The music has to be there and will cut through all the other bullshit. Lady Gaga had Edge of Glory and You and I, both of which outperformed Judas on radio and other talents to rely on which has led to her having fair success in music and acting ever since. We will see if he has the same.
