Those radio interviews gave me so much more respect and affection for Kelly than I already had. She is really too good for modern show business. Her refusal to do stuff that she doesnt want to do when under pressure from her record label (not because she's a diva and focused on commercial success, but because she wants to be happy- such an original concept), or look the way that people expect celebrities to look all the time...she is really different and so special and I just hope everyone eventually appreciates that about her rather than condemning her for it.

Ok, I have a confession to make. For just the smallest of time I doubted Kelly's decision - just a little. Oh, not her My December decision but the decision to discuss the problems she'd had getting the music she wanted on this cd. All I could think was "is it really the best decision to poke that big dog with that big old stick"?
I'm sorry Kelly. You were right. I was wrong to ever doubt for one moment. After reading about Clive's alleged meltdown on that velvetrope website all I can think is - Oooooh, Clive doesn't like being proven wrong does he? Haha! DO THESE SOUND LIKE #1 SONGS TO YOU? DO THEY DAMMIT! I WASN'T REALLY WRONG - I WAS JUST MISTAKEN. I MEAN LISTEN, THIS IS SO DIFFERENT THEN ANYTHING OUT THERE - SO WHAT IF THEY ARE GOOD, THEY AREN'T COOKIE CUTTER! THEY AREN'T THE NORM! Mommmmmmy!!!!
I can only imagine Clive's ire when he got the callback stats over the weekend. #1 on ratethemusic. One of OHP's most requested songs. #1 on promosquad. I can only imagine how she did on stations that run their independent survey's. s**t! Kelly was right, and I was wrong and now I'm going to look the fool cuz I made such a big deal out of this. Awwww, it's aight Clive!
Now, I know this won't be a popular opinion but I don't hate Clive. He's a businessman. He doesn't like to have his artists venture much off the road most taken. He's investing his money and the bottom line is, he wants to see the biggest return on his money. And I don't think he's proven wrong often - especially not by a 25 year old young lady. So, no hate here - and I don't suspect he'll ever come right out and admit he's wrong. He'll probably just continue to handle it like he did this weekend - which is fine with me. We're getting the cd more sooner than later and that's all that counts in my world.
I don't think I've admired Kelly more than I do right now after listening to a couple of radio interviews. She has her vision and refuses to let anyone else drive this vehicle called her career. If she crashes and burns, she wants to crash and burn with her at the wheel and not a designated driver. Love her or hate her, you gotta atleast respect that - even if only just a little.
Kudo's to you Kelly Clarkson. Kudo's to you.

I don't see her doing BA numbers. Maybe if she has an amazing ballad. We really have to hear the album. But as of now I don't think it will be as big as BA.

I'm sure Clive cares, but Kelly doesn't seem to care too much. I think the album will be successful. Maybe not as successful as Breakaway, but how often is there a success like that. Maybe after we hear all the material on the album we might think it will be more successful than Breakaway.

Even with brilliance as material I do not think she would beat BA. Even if she had like, three #1 hits. BA was once in a lifetime massive. It pretty much hit the peak of what any album can do in America right now. If we are going to gauge every single future album's success compared to BA we will be disappointed every time. She will flop every time.

Yeah. And even selling 1 million is a huge complishment in America, due to all the illegal downloading going around.

I think selling a million after a 6X platinum cd would be a bit of a disappointment, but you are right that some artists who have had multiple, multiple airplay hits have not even broken 2 million yet. I think she will need to at least come close to 3 million to not be seen as a flop, but I think any album that hits over 2 million nowadays can qualify as not a complete flop. I hope she at least outsells Thankful though. (About 2.5 million right?)

Geez - after reading that Clive Davis stuff...they are taking this seriously. I mean to the point of sabotaging her in a semi-public forum of industry leaders...yikes. I thought she said that RCA was starting to dig the album...what a scary industry.

See, that's the beauty of it for me. Kelly doesn't care! Sure she wants to be successful - but she doesn't care if it's as successful as BA.
I agree with LPL in that setting BA as the bar to beat is setting up for surefire failure. Could she beat it - sure. Will she beat it - I highly, highly doubt it. But that's ok for me - it can still be a success but not AS successful as BA.
I look at it like a businessman that owns many corporations. One of them is a billion dollar company. The other 2 only multi-million dollar companies. Are the other two companies failures? Not by a long shot - but placed next to that billion dollar companies stats one would be tempted to call them failures at a glance. Sure they aren't as successful as the other one but they are still successful in their own rights.
I don't think Clive was trying to sabotage her as much as he was trying to save face because he so wanted her to go more commerical. Kind of like - would YOU have predicted these songs to be smash radio hits? I know Never Again has a ways to go before it's considered a smash radio hit but all indications are that it will be just that (call-out stats, etc).
No leak on the video yet, eh? Come on already! haha

I think NA might stall...and then things will get interesting. I mean, it has moved very quickly, its selling pretty well on Itunes, and call out has been amazing, but I have a feeling it will probably stall. I have no idea where they will go from that moment forward, but I do feel like Kelly will lose some say if that happens.

Come on already! haha Its easy for her to say 'I don't care' but ultimately Kelly is still pretty early in her career and she won't always have the freshness she has now. And at this point we all know 'My December' won't be a failure because she's at least guaranteed a certain amount of sales because of 'Breakaway', but as time goes on the album sales are going to be harder to maintain. So Kelly will have to care at some point. Clive just knows that on a third album(second since her real breakthrough) solidifying and keeping the momentum going as much as possible is the best for his pocket but also for her career if she wants longevity. BTW, I love 'Never Again' i'm just trying to put some perspective on things.

why would selling 2 million be a flop? Most artists can't sell even 1 million let alone 2. So kelly has to sell 3 to not be considered a flop? lol that doesn't make sense.

why would selling 2 million be a flop? Most artists can't sell even 1 million let alone 2. So kelly has to sell 3 to not be considered a flop? lol that doesn't make sense. You have to consider previous sales not just sales in general. If Usher fails to sell a certain amount he will be considered a flop as well just because his last cd went diamond (or close to it) Going from a 9 million plus cd to one that barely sells 2 million will be considered a disappointment just because of that standard even THOUGH many artists are struggling to sell over platinum nowadays. It would be different for him to go 2x platinum compared to...lets say if Katharine Mcphee or Vanessa Carlton hits 2x platinum. To most people, if Kelly goes from a 6x platinum cd to not even 2x platinum, that will be considered a flop/disappointment just because of how much she has sold in the past. It would be a third or less than a third of her previous sales. I feel like to shut people up she will have to sell at least enough over 2 million to get a 3x platinum. (Which could happen anywhere from 2.5 million up) Does that make more sense now? Declarations of underperformances and flops do not just come from "what other artists do" but also that own artist's previous sales. Personally I will be satisfied with anything above 2 million. I think the only reason she will fail to hit two million is if she fails to garner a true radio hit, and if she fails to get a true radio hit from this era I will be more concerned about that than just the plain sales.

Today is the day we get the video....this should greatly improve Kelly's spins for her new Single!

Kelly's going to be fine. We know this is going to do better than "Thankful," and even that sold 2 mil I think. She's going to sell at least as well as Beyonce (around 3.3 now, right?) just based on name recognizition and cred, and will probably have large ww sales. I have no worries for this era so far.

I totally hear ya mugshot! I don't think that she doesn't care AT ALL - I think it's more a 'as long as she can sell enough to keep making cds' she's happy. I mean, ultimately, all artists want to get their work heard - and people buying it is a sort of validation, ya know? My interpretation is that Kelly would rather have 2M people buying her vision than 5M people buying someone else's vision recorded by her (I hope that makes sense).
I too hope she has a hit or two from this cd. Let's be realistic - it's hard to sell alot of cd's if nobody hears what you are selling ahead of time. There are a few niche artists that can sell well off TV appearances alone but radio is still, imo, the bread and butter of getting your songs out there for the general public to hear.
I personally feel the Sophmore cd is the make or break it cd - and since hers was a smash (not an easy task to do - they didn't coin the term Sophmore Slump on a whim ya know?) anything after that is, well, a less uphill battle?
I'm also think that Kelly getting her story out there about how this cd is her vision, how she hopes people like it and how hard she had to fight not to put out someone else's vision could play well as a bit of a 'underdog story'. Root for the little person so to speak. I totally don't think that's her intention at all (I think it's more a force your hand type move and I do admire that she's putting it all on her shoulders, win or lose, that she takes full responsibility for this cd) but I think that's how it will play in alot of the casual fans/general publics mind.
I'm also totally in love with the whole 'storyteller' theme of the cd (Kelly has said that all the tracks put together tell the story of her life over the past couple of years) and I hope the tracklisting plays out in the storytelling order and Clive doesn't do his silly tracklisting in order of planned singles. I can't wait to hear the whole thing. Come on June/July/August - whatever the date is (I'm still hoping for mid to late June).
