I'll be honest... before I listened to the song, I had a feeling I wouldn't like it. But, this is actually pretty good. Hope it does well for him.

I like this too, just got sent out digitally to radio today. Should have a decent shot to debut on Billboard next week even though it doesn't go for adds until June 2.

who was the last black solo artist to have a top 10 country song ? I may be wrong, but isn't Charley Pride the only black country artist to even crack Top 40?

Aaron Neville made it to #38 with "The Grand Tour." But I guess that doesn't fit the black country artist category.

There's that story that goes around about Lefty Frizzell seeing him, being touched by "Hank and Lefty Raised My Country Soul," and then still making a racist comment. I forget exactly, but I guess that's just indicative of the times...

Yikes, I dunno if I want to hear that story. Not much of a suprise really though. Lefty was one of my dads heros , and one of his biggest disappointments when he got to play with him. He got so messed up he couldnt even make the second show.

I like this alot. Hope it does well. Me too. I was a little afraid Rucker's country records would sound contrived, but if this is any indication, he's transitioned well. Forgot about Ray and The Pointers, but Stoney Edwards was the one that came to my mind too. There's that story that goes around about Lefty Frizzell seeing him, being touched by "Hank and Lefty Raised My Country Soul," and then still making a racist comment. I forget exactly, but I guess that's just indicative of the times... Ive got a Best Of cd from Stoney thats great! Blackbird was a amazing song, almost epic ,& still gives me chill bumps. Yikes, I dunno if I want to hear that story. Not much of a suprise really though. Lefty was one of my dads heros , and one of his biggest disappointments when he got to play with him. He got so messed up he couldnt even make the second show. I don't know many Edwards tunes but the few I have heard are quite good, so I'm glad to hear the rest are up to that standard as well. Lefty made some great music, but I guess we all had our faults. I found the story I was referring to. I was a little off on the details: "['Hank and Lefty Raised My Country Soul'] is a lovely and loving tribute, right down to Pete Drake's swirling steel figure, which copies Curly Chalker's work on Frizzell's 'Always Late (With Your Kisses)' just as Stoney starts to reminisce about it. Too bad Frizzell didn't respond in kind the one time he and Edwards met. According to an interview published in a 1992 issue of the Journal of Country Music, Frizzell was off at a table by himself in a Music Row dive in 1973, just two years before his death, when Edwards approached him. 'Hank and Lefty' was playing on the jukebox. 'Lefty was sitting there crying and he was listening to that song,' Stoney told interviewer Jeff Woods. 'He said, 'Boy, I tell you, that song just tears me up. That song's a tribute to me. I didn't think anybody cared nothing about me anymore.' And then, out of the clear blue, Lefty says, 'And wouldn't you know it? It had to be by a [word omitted, but you can guess].' Well, then he shook my hand, but I don't think he ever did know who he was talking to.'" -From Heartaches by the Number: Country Music's 500 Greatest Singles by David Cantwell & Bill Friskics-Warren

Let's not forget Big Al Downing. He charted 15 times, with songs peaking at #18 and 20. That's very similar to Stoney's chart history, 15 songs with 2 reaching #20.
It's not a solo credit, but the best non-Pride African American chart run I can think of belongs to the small band led by the saxophonist Louis Jordan, who hit #1 in 1944 with Ration Blues. That was the third country #1 ever, so at one point a third of the Billboard country #1's were by black artists.
And Ray Charles did reach the top 20 as a solo artist, in addition to having 5 duets with different partners also reach the top 20 (with Seven Spanish Angels reaching #1).
There was a twosome, one white and one black, that I just can't remember the name of. Don't think they had great chart success. I'm sure there are others but my memory isn't as good as it might be.

Good debut of #51 this week for Darius. This song was originally put up on Play MPE on Friday with an add date of June 2, but it wasn't available to download (it could only be streamed). It was sent out again this afternoon with an add date of today (4/21), and it's now available for radio stations to download. I'm thinking the add date got moved up because of positive reaction. I wouldn't be surprised if this eventually makes the top 10.

Well, at least it's not this that went for adds. (Couldn't help it ) He's probably the only artist that I know that has managed to make an alternative album, an R&B album, and a country album and not only that...he's managed to make songs from all those eras of his career sound well. Granted, Back to Then didn't do too well sales wise, but the singles from it were really good and underrated. Had this been any other artist that made a random transition from R&B to country, it wouldn't have done well at all.

Ahh, forgot about Big Al.
This tune is okay . Im hoping he has some stuff thats a little more country on the record though. Ive always been a pretty big fan of the Blowfish. Cracked Rear View is one of my all time favorite non-country records. Since hes friends with Radney Foster, I wonder if he'll get any cuts ....

Good vocals, good instrumentation, dull music -- but on the whole, it's pretty good. Strong voice. The MySpace page with the song has a short biography, making reference to Rivers Rutherford, Frank Rogers, Dave Berg, Chris Dubois, and Clay Mills. Nothing about Radney.

This song is doing extremely well. It's #42 on the R&R chart and #20 on the active gainers chart. Picking up major markets and shows no signs of slowing down. I think Capitol is going to turn this into a nice hit.
The hasn't officially gone for adds yet either. May 27th is the official day and the song already has 70 plus stations spinning it. Love seeing this succeed.

Zazie, What about Dobie Gray? The guy who sang Drift Away in the early 1970. Dobie had a T40 hit with That's One To Grow On (1986 #35). I remember when this song debuted on ACC back then....yeah I'm THAT old! The heart doctor was Cleve Francis, however he never made it to the T40. He only got as far as #47 with You Do My Heart Good (1992) Someone mentioned Aaron Neville, he got to #38 iwth the remake The Grand Tour (1993). Then Big Al Downing's T40 hits: Mr. Jones (1979 #20) Touch Me (I'll Be Your Fool Once More) (1979 #18) The Story Behind The Story (1980 #33) Bring It On Home (1980 #20) It Takes Love (1983 #38) ....and yes I remember these too! AND for Charley Pride's LAST T10 Shouldn't It Be Easier Than This (1988 #5)

Currently sitting at #37 with the official adds day coming tomorrow. I'm hearing this song could make a run to the top. It's still early but the results so far are very encouraging.

I wonder when the last time 2 African-American Artists were on the chart at the same time like they are now? (Rissi & Darius)

I really wasn't expecting to like this, but it is actually quite good. He doesn't try to twang up his voice and sounds surprisingly natural singing country. The more I hear this, the more I'm really liking it. I think it has a real chance to be a big hit.

I've actually heard it a few times on the radio already and I like it too. I've always liked Hootie and the Blowfish anyway so it's nice to see him on country radio.
