Not too bad of a choice. I had seen some scattered Mediabase activity in the last week for River Of Love, and while that one might have been a tad more "radio-friendly" than Troubadour, I had Troub ranked as my 4th favorite song on the album, and River as the 11th (or next-to-last). So I'll at least enjoy hearing this George song on the radio the next four months. I won't be expecting the 44th #1 from it, but maybe a #3 peak (with, what, Taylor and the next Brad song blocking him?). It should be a cinch to become George's 79th top 10 song on Billboard, which would put him into second place all-time by himself, over George Jones (and only behind Eddy Arnold's 92).
All that being said, I get a little antsy about them releasing singles that potentially highlight George's advancing years. True enough, the national radio collective will eventually all decide that George is too old, and cease giving him the widespread airplay he's received for the last quarter-century. But it's risky to start drawing attention to that fact. I know I was glad that they didn't release Somewhere Down In Texas a few years ago, from the album of the same name.

I like this song, but I really want "House of Cash" do be a single sometime.

This is probably my favorite from the new album, I'm glad this is chosen as a single, especially after the disappointing "I Saw God Today". :)

How did "Somewhere Down in Texas" highlight George's advancing years? The only way I can tell he's getting older is to a.) look at him, or b.) listen to how more reliant he's gotten on tweaking his voice in the studio.

How did "Somewhere Down in Texas" highlight George's advancing years? The only way I can tell he's getting older is to a.) look at him, or b.) listen to how more reliant he's gotten on tweaking his voice in the studio. The first line of that song starts it off, "I've been on the road now dang near all my life", and then all the allusions to having worked hard and being ready to go home to Texas. It comes across to me as a retirement song, and I think George gets enough "When are you going to retire?" questions nowadays from the few interviews he grants, and there was no reason to stoke the flame even more by releasing a song on the subject. Thus, I'm glad that they went with other singles from that album. I know I was glad that in I Saw God Today, it's about a guy witnessing the birth of a daughter, and not (more appropriately for a man who's just turned 56) a granddaughter. Sure, it might make George come off like Tony Randall, but I'd always rather see him release those types of songs that make him "sound young". There's still a few more chart records and benchmarks that I'm counting on him to reach, so he needs to buy as much more time as possible!

I liked the Tony Randall reference, and I think top 3, 4, or 5 is about right for Troubadour. But at least it will be a song I can enjoy on the radio, whereas ROL was going to be really tiresome.
Since ROL was listed on the album sticker along with ISGT as featured on the album, it looks as if something changed the label's plans. I guess it could be the third single, but I'm guessing if they abandoned it now, they're going to leave it in the reject pile.
Either song with "house" in the title would make me happy as the third (and presumably last) single.

This is a decent choice , and in my top 3 or 4 favorite songs from this record. And I agree either "House " song would work as singles. But I REALLY want House Of Cash released at some point. If for no other reason, then to hear Patty on the radio again. I certinally DONT want River Of Love ...Strait or no Strait... that would be an instant button masher for me.....

"Patty on the radio" sounds like a cool song title. I miss her more than anybody else (Pam Tillis is second, Dixie Chicks third) who disappeared from the radio the last few years. Come back, Patty.
And House of Cash would be a great way to make a comeback, followed by a new album of hers.

^ Yup , Im thinkin' the same exact thing. It would easily be a top 5 hit, and would spark some intrest from record companies to get her back out there. Although , in my list of missing females, Id put her around #4. I Miss Tanya , Pam , & Lorrie just a smidgen more then Patty.
...but thats just me...

I totally thought Patty Griffin, and guess why, because Lucinda has a line about "Loretta on the radio" in one of her songs. No, this makes no sense. Anyway - I like this single. It always plays when one opens the homepage of the ACM.

I heard this on the radio for the first time tonight, and the song is starting to grow on me. I've never been a huge George fan (although he does deliver the occasional song that I love), but I also rarely hate his songs (She'll Leave You With a Smile being the last of his that I really hated). This song isn't any different. I'll like it now, but I'll probably grow tired of it by the time it reaches the Top 10.

I'm not a huge George Strait fan either. The odd song of his I really like, but on the whole I can take him or leave him. This song definitely falls in the 'leave' pile.

Bleah, not all that great. Lyrics are okay, singing is pitch-corrected as usual... I like King George, but this one does nothing for me.

I really thought "Give It Away" was clever. As should anything with the name Jamey Johnson on it. And I know nobody else agrees with me, but I thought "You'll Be There" was the best thing George has ever cut. This one... eh, maybe it'll grow on me. I'm not liking it right now, it just seems dull. I won't rule out the fact that it might grow on me, although I have to ask what the heck happened to Leslie Satcher. She used to write only fun stuff ("I Said a Prayer", "When God-Fearing Women Get the Blues"), now she's dead serious.

She has serious songs there as well as playful ones. I would say she's a great songwriter and there is no way to limit the territory of great songwriters -- they go wherever they want. (She has a great voice, too, but I won't take the thread any further away from George.)

Then it won ACMs and CMAs. My best friend who hates country music loves this song. It all just baffles me.

I'm a huge Strait fan but I gotta admit, nothing really strikes me with this song too much. I've never really been impressed too much with it, but it will probably grow on me more with more listens.

I'm not sure where else to ask this question because it's not about the current single, but it does pertain to George.
Can someone tell me why "Stars On The Water" only hit #50 (according to billboard.com) on the country chart? What's the stroy behind that? Was it the last single from the album? Was it not officially released?
Thanks!
