im not expecting a new single from this album, although it would be a nice surprise. Maybe you would be expecting another single from this album if you had read some of the recent posts in this thread. It looks like we'll be getting the next single soon since "More Like Her" is down about 400k on Mediabase after the first two days of the week.

im sorry, i jjust read the last post where the user said "any word on a new single" thanks for correcting that person as well... anyway, is a 5th single going to sell the album anymore, its almost been out for 2 years, most people would already have it and have heard those 3 possibilities as a final single. I think the next single should be the first single from the next album.

There are also reports she wants her next album out in September, so that doesn't leave time for another single. We shall see if they scrap the next single or push the next album back.

I haven't really listened to this whole album although what I have heard I've loved. But from those who have, are there other single-worthy songs on it?

I hope this song's done soon. It's been wasting chart space for the past few weeks.

Good songs don't waste chart space. That's wasted by a majority of the other artists.

Good songs don't waste chart space. That's wasted by a majority of the other artists. They do if they spend six or more weeks bouncing between 17 and 20. And as I've said before, I just think that this is a mediocre song.

I think this is Miranda's best song to date, but it seems a little underappreciated.

Hammer, now that I've found you in this thread -- you have perfect pitch, and you can tell me if pretty much all of Miranda's songs are written in the same key. The ones played on radio, anyway. They sound so similar tonally but I'm not qualified to say why.

Okay, I'm not as good at finding out keys, so I had to look these up. All keys are major.
"Me and Charlie Talking": A "Bring Me Down": E "Kerosene": D "New Strings": D "Crazy Ex Girlfriend": D "Famous in a Small Town": A "Gunpowder & Lead": C "More Like Her": B
Except for "More Like Her", most of these are in fairly normal keys. E, A, and D all make use of the A chord (and A uses the D chord), which might account for some of the similarity.
I think the reason that many of the melodies sound the same is because, for the most part, they're using the same intervals and chord patterns, even if the key is different. For instance, the melody of the line "That's just me and Charlie talking" has most of the same notes as the melody in the line "Everybody dies famous in a small town". "Kerosene" and "Gunpowder" both use a sort of blues/jazz scale by bumping down the thirds and sevenths. I'm finding a lot of variations on the typical "three chord country" pattern of I-IV-V-I (which, in C, translates to C-F-G-C).
Most likely, she just isn't as skilled in the melody department, which causes some tonal similarities. It could be that she doesn't know how to read music — which is by no means an insult — and doesn't really know all the ins and outs of making a melody, so she relies on trading off a few patterns instead. I know that Toby Keith can't read music, and I've caught quite a few patterns of his, such as beginning the chorus on an IV chord.
Even as a melody guy, I don't think that melodic limitation is a bad thing in cases such as these, because both Miranda and Toby have multiple patterns that they rotate. Both also vary from the typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus pattern now and then, to mix things up more. Compare to, say, Dierks Bentley, who seems to have pretty much ONE pattern for his songs, and I'm pretty sure that most of his material after "How Am I Doin'" is in the same two or three keys as well.

Thanks for the detailed comments. I have a clearer idea and I will pay more attention to Miranda's music to identify what bothers me -- I've always hated "they all sound alike to me" as a form of criticism, but in her case I find that they do. (Dierks too.)
It looks now as if MLH will be in the key of R for recurrent next week. Any negative will get it pulled, and right now on MB it's only down 200+k, so there's room for a rebound. But I don't expect one.

i actually thought "More Like Her" was a nice acoustic breath of fresh air compared to her "Gunpowder and Lead" type songs...but that's just me.

I love Miranda because to my ears her songs are memorable in their melodies, not like some other songs on the charts that are just samey. Perhaps I don't have you guys' music understanding, but she doesn't need to play like Ravi Shankar to have more melody than a lot of the plastic out there, at least imo

I don't really think that ballads are her forte, though. I love Miranda because to my ears her songs are memorable in their melodies, not like some other songs on the charts that are just samey. I dont think her material is all that same-y, really. There are some little parts that sound similar to each other as I pointed out. Melodic similarities generally don't bug me unless they become too same-y, like on a Dierks Bentley level — as I pointed out, Dierks tends to stick to the same structure, tempo, and orchestration.

I think her ballads are some of her best songs. If you haven't heard any of those songs, you should really check them out. Why don't you think they're her "forte"?

I've heard "Bring Me Down" and "Greyhound", which I think are more tuneful and more capably sung than "More Like Her". (I don't have her 2nd album.) I just don't find them as compelling as her mid- and up-tempos, since her voice tends to go really thin on some of the ballads, and I just don't find the lyrics as interesting.

It's definitely underappreciated, yes, but I wouldn't say it's her best song (or even her best single, for that matter). As of now, 'Famous In A Small Town' and 'Dry Town' are my favorites. I can relate to both of them, especially 'FIAST'.

Did the "next single" poll have any announcements of what won or anything? ???

I would also add "Easy From Now On" on that list, as it's a great song. I think Miranda sounds the best on the ballads, although people aren't that used to it, since she is best known for her "sassy" side. As for her uptempo songs, they quite don't do it for me. Both "Gunpowder and Lead" and "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" are annoying, as I prefer when she uses the soft side of her voice, plus, IMO, the latter lack a good chorus. However, "Guilty In Here" and "Dry Town" are such great uptempo songs. No word on a next single?
