If the song is good enough to cross over as it is then it shouldnt need a remix IMO. Or one might argue that if a song is pop enough then it doesn't need a remix. I agree that it's silly to argue the point from either side. A crossover is a crossover. As long as you continue to respect and record country music then I don't much care if you release songs to other genres. But don't use country music as a fallback plan in case things don't work out on the pop side.

I could be incorrect, but it sounds to me like someone is jealous because a certain artist isn't getting much airplay....and an artist that has charted on both pop AND country charts.

^You're probably talking about me and no, I'm not jealous. I've made this rant for years about how Faith, Shania, and LeAnn got ridiculed (and now some on here are pointing a finger at Taylor) for 'going pop' when it's now an accepted thing and even pop stars are welcomed to country radio.

Eventually you'll learn to just go with the flow. For me, I can rest assured knowing that Carrie Underwood, as successful as she's been, will probably never reach Shania Twain's plateau of success. That's not really Carrie's fault, but time's have changed and that's the reality. You also have to remember that Nashville won't argue when money is involved. Faith got away with crossing over more than any other because she was using Nashville producers, Nashville booking companies, Nashville management, etc., etc. Catch my drift?

Based on dudley's post, I honestly feel like Carrie has the award in the bag. She can sing circles around Miranda (even though I love Miranda, she sings well, just not as good as Carrie) and she has been most successful then her fellow country belters. To each his own. Generally, I prefer Carrie to Miranda but I don't think Carrie can sing circles around her. Of course, belting isn't my definition of singing. I completely agree, although I prefer Miranda. For some reason, a lot of people seem to think that belting equals singing talent. Carrie has an amazing voice, no question, but the constant belting and shouting gets a bit old after a while. There are many female artists who can sing without resorting to it - Kellie Pickler, Jewel, Miranda, Ashton Shepherd, Taylor and Colbie Caillat just to name a few. I wish Carrie would tone it down once in a while.

^ Carrie tones it down all the time-- she sings soft and pretty more beautifully then everyone on your list when she wants to. She does a few acoustic type songs in concert- and she sang Desperado at the grammys as good as Don Henley-- no belting there.
At the ACMs, the duet that Carrie did with Brad paisely to honor Eddy Arnold was incredible-- soft, acoustic, and lovely-- no belting or shouting there. Carrie has great versatility in her voice and can sing anything brilliantly, whether it be acoustic or a song that requires singing to the rafters. She doesn't shout. But to each his own.
I would rather have Martina, Trisha, and carrie's amazing versatility, range, and power to belt anyday then have to suffer through someone who has no ability to stay on key or on pitch- nor do they have any vocal power or range like Carrie does. Anyone can sing an easy song that requires no range or power---but true vocalists like Faith, Leanne, Carrie and Trisha, Martina, etc--rock at both power belting songs, and acoustic songs ---and can do them better then all the ladies on your list- in my opinion... though I do like Miranda and Jewel, and think ashton shepherd has potential. Soft and pretty is ruined if the singer cannot hold a note.

A lot of vocal power and a huge range doesn't always equate a good singer - in my opinion, anyway. Sometimes it's nice to listen to an artist who doesn't try to stretch each note into a ridiculous length, whether they can or not. That's one of several reasons I prefer women like Miranda and Jewel over Carrie, even though she is one of my favorite singers. They're talented and they know it, but they're not showy about it.

Folks, please keep this thread on topic which is your predictions for this year's CMA Awards nominations. Your defenses of your favorite artists are -not- on topic.
Also off topic: your analysis of which fellow poster may or may not be jealous. For that matter, your analysis of why any poster might think the way s/he does is off-topic. Stick to posting on the subject named in the thread, not about each other. Thanks.

So back on topic, Matt, for clarification, if someone just lists the artist for Song or Single nomination, are you going to count that if they don't specify which song/single?

No, the song must be listed as well. That means T and Stephen will need to finalize their lists before the cutoff (which will be September 9 12pm)

I agree with both of you that the award should be based on artistic merit and not sales, but my post was, as I think you both noted, just me venting about how the CMA doesn't, and probably shouldn't be expected to, adhere to the guidelines it set. If we're going to talk history, how is it that Johnny Cash only got awarded for the American series after he died? Why is it that Loretta Lynn didn't get a nomination for Van Lear Rose? The list goes on and on.. I think for the 5 women to watch for FOTY this year, you can't argue with Carrie, Taylor, and Miranda. The other two slots will be "courtesy" nominations, so I'm expecting Martina and then either LeAnn or Trisha. Don't count out Alison Krauss though; she's a perennial favorite for "courtesy" slots. voters RARELY go by the guidelines. it has been my contention all along that they go by what they think are the important criteria. this is why i think its a bit of a waste of time to find the rules and the guidelines... and this subjectivity is a reason why some artists tend to be snubbed more often and some get awarded more...

OK, I'm done giving people another chance. From now on, anyone who ignores my post about staying on topic and not getting into defenses of your favorite artist is going to get formally warned by the Pulse admins. And that will put you on the path to suspension from this board.

"Moments" is not eligible. Are you positive? I know it peaked in late June, but was still on the charts as of July 1. Or did the song have to peak after July 1?

well i don't think it makes sense to include it. if it was going to get a nomination, it should have been last year. it hit #1 in May of last year didn't it?

The sad thing about these predictions is that no one is taking any risks, which is exactly how the CMA will vote: same ole, same ole. :(
